ENVELOP-SEALER.
SPECIFICATION forming` part of Letters Patent N o. 725,795, dated April 21, 1903. Application filed October 7, 1902. Serial No. 126,292. (No model.)
To (all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY I. TALLEY, a citizen of the United States,residing at Philadelphia, county of Philadelphia, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a newiand useful Improvementin Envelop-Sealers,of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to theV accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention has for its object the provision of means for the sealing of envelops by power with certainty and rapidity.
The invention consists of a certain novel provision and arrangement of moistening, feeding, sealing, conveying, and finishing rollers and in dierent details of arrangement and construction.
In the drawings,Eigure 1 is a plan view of the machine. Fig. 2 is a side elevation, and Fig. 3 a vertical section on the line 3 3 of Fig. l.
A is the frame of the machine; B B, side pieces secured to the front and rear walls.
10, l1, 12, 13, and 14 are a series of slots in B B,said slots being open at their upper ends.
D D are idle feeding-rollers, the shafts of vwhich rest in the bottom ends of slots l0 and 11, respectively, and rotate therein.
E F are sealing-rollers. The shaft of E rests and rotates in the bottom end of slots 12. The shaft of F also rotates in slots 12. Rollers E and F are normally held in contact by means of elastic bands 20 engaging pulleys 2l and 22 on the shafts -of rollers E and F, respectively. f
G is a conveying-roller, the shaft of which rests in the bottom end of slot 13 and rotates therein.
H I are finishing-rollers. The shaft of H rests and rotates in the bottom end of slots 14. The shaft of I also rotates in .slots 14. Rollers H and I are normally held in contact by elastic bands 30 engaging pulleys 31 and 32 on the shafts of rollers H and-I, respectively; The rollers D D, E, G, and H are in the same horizontal plane.
K is a bracket ou the front of the frame.
M is a pad in a receptacle L, supported on said bracket.
N is a moisteuing-roller journaled iu the bracket and contacting with pad M.
Pis a handle screwed to the top of the frame.
The means for d1 iving the moistening, sealing, and finishing rollers are as follows: O is a motor secured to the door of the frame of the machine and beneath the roller-bed. 40 is a pulley on the motor-shaft. 41 is a pulley on the shaft of Sealing-roller E. 42 is a belt connecting pulleys 40 and 41. By these means roller E is driven. 43 is another pulley on the shaft of roller E, having two grooves. 44 is a pulley on the shaft of the moistening-roller N. 45 is a pulley on the shaft of the finishing-roller H. 46 is a belt extending around one groove of pulley 43 and around pulley 44. 47 is a belt extending around the other groove of pulley 43 and around pulley 45. By these means rollers H and N'are driven.
The operation of the machine is as follows: Water is poured into receptacle L, thereby saturating pad M. This causes alilm of water to be maintained on the face of the moistening-roller N. The Hap of the envelop to be sealed is held for a moment against the rotating surface of roller N, which meistens the glue. The envelop, with its inclosure, is then laid on the feeding-rollers D D and pushed forward. The rollers D D, being on the same plane as sealing-roller E, guide the envelop exactly between the sealing-rollers E and F. The envelop is carried very rapidly between and through the sealing-rollers, the roller F yielding to the pressure of any ordinary thickness of paper and the elastic bands 2O by their contractile force causing a substantial pressure to be exerted upon the envelop as it passes through. The envelop after passing over the conveying-roller G is fed rapidly between and through the finishing-rollers H and I, said rollers operating in the same Way as rollers E and F. The envelop is deposited in a suitable receptacle at the rear of the machine.
The sealing operation just described is very rapid, the machine being capable of sealing more envelops than can be fed by the operator. The envelops may be of any dimensions and may be laid on the rollers D D either longitudinally, laterally, or obliquely, as the sealing-rollers will act upon them with IOO equal efliciency, no matter what position they occupy as they are fed. This uniform action of the sealing-rollers enables any additional guides to be dispensed with. The rollers D D and E, being on the same plane insures the delivery of the envelops to the proper position midway between the axes of the rollers E and F. The rollers E and F will usually of themselves effectively seal the envelop; lo but the passing of the envelop through and between the finishing-rollers H and I renders the sealing doubly secure and obviates the chance of the flap springing away from the body of the envelop after a single roller pres- :5 sure. The utility of the finishing-roller is marked in case the glue is of an inferior quality or scanty quantity, or the thickness ofthe envelop is considerable, oi the envelop is constrncted of thick or semirigid material.
The rollers may be readily removed for repair, readjustment, or substitution by being withdrawn from the slots, the belts 42, 46, and 47 being previously removed in the case of the Withdrawal of rollers E and H.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to protect by Letters Patent, is-
1. In an envelop-sealer, the combination, with a frame, of rollers journaled therein, 3o said rollers consisting of one or more feedingrollers, a pair of sealing-rollers, a conveyingroller, and a pairof finishing-rollers, arranged consecutively in the order named, and means for driving the sealing and iinishing rollers, substantially at described.
2. In an envelop-sealer, the combination, with a frame, of rollers journaled therein, said rollers consisting of two or more feedingrollers, a pair of sealing-rollers, a conveying- 4o roller and a pair of finishing-rollers, arranged consecutively in the order named, a moistening device arranged in front of the feeding-rollers, and means for driving the sealing and finishing rollers, substantially as described. v
3. In an envelop-sealer, the combination, With a frame, of rollers journaled therein, said rollers consisting of one or more feedingrollers, a pair of sealing-rollers, a conveying- 5o roller and a pair of finishing-rollers, arranged consecutively in the order named, a pad on the front of the frame, a moistening-roller journaled in the frame and contacting with said pad, and means for driving the moistening, sealing and finishing rollers, substantially as described.
4. In au envelop-sealer, the combination, with a frame, of one or more feeding-rollers, a sealing-roller, a conveying-roller and a fin- 6o ishing-roller arranged in the same horizontal plane, means for driving the sealing and conveying rollers, a second sealing-roller held in elastic and yielding connection with the first sealing-roller, and a second finishing-roller held in elastic and yielding connection with the first finishing-roller, substantially as described.
5. In an envelop-sealer, the combination, with va pair of sealing-rollers, a pair of finishing-rollers, and a conveying-roller between the sealing and finishing rollers, of means for driving the sealing and finishing rollers, substantially as described.
6. In an envelop -sealer, the combination, with an inclosing frame, of a pair of sealingrollers, a pair of finishing-rollers, one roller of each pair being a positively-driven roller, a motor inclosed in said frame and beneath the said rollers, and driving connections from the shaft of the motor to the shafts of said positively-driven rollers, substantially as described.
7. In an envelop-sealer, the combination, vvvith an inclosing frame, of a pair of sealingrollers, a pair of finishing-rollers, a motor inclosed in said frame and beneath the said rollers, driving connections from the shaft of the motor to the shaft of one of the sealingrollers, and from the shaft of the last-named roller to the shaft of one of the finishing-rollers, and idle feeding and conveying rollers arranged in the same horizontal plane with the driven sealing and finishing rollers, substantially as described.
8. In an envelop-sealer, the combination, with an inclosing frame, of a series of slots open at their upper ends in the sides of the frame, a pair of iinishing-rollers, one above the other rotatable in the rear pair of slots, a conveying-roller rotatable in the next adjoining pair of slots, a pair of sealing-rollers rotatable in the third pair of slots, a feedingroller rotatable in the fourth pair of slots, a feeding-roller rotatable in the front pair of slots, a motor inclosed in said frame and located beneath the roller-bed, driving means connecting the motor-shaft With one of the sealing-rollers, driving means connecting the last-named roller and one of the nishingrollers, the two feeding-rollers, the driven sealing-roller, the conveying-roller, and the driven finishing-roller being in the same horizontal plane, and a moistening device located at the front of the frame, substantially as described.
9. In an envelop-sealer, the combination, with an inclqsing frame, of a series of slots open at their upper ends in the sides of said frame, a pair of finishing-rollers, one above the other rotatable in the rear pair of slots, a conveying-roller rotatable in the next adjoining pair of slots, a pair of sealing-rollers rotatable in the third pair of slots, a feedingroller rotatable in the fourth pair of slots, a second feeding-roller rotatable in the front pair of slots, a motor inclosed in said frame and located beneath the roller-bed, driving means connecting the motor-shaft with one of the sealing-rollers, a bracket secured to the front of the frame, a pad thereon, a moistening-roller journaled in said bracket and rotatable in contact with said pad, driving means connecting the driven sealing-roller respectively with the moistening-roller and IOC IOS
