IMPROVED DEVICE FOR EJEGTING HOT WATER ON WAR-VESSEL$.

TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, ABBOTT Q. Ross, of Cloves, in the county of Hamilton, and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Apparatus for Extinguishing Fires, and Repelling Boarders on War-Vessels, for Scrubbing Decks, and for Conveying team to Siphon-Pumps; and I do hereby declare that the following is a. full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, in which- Figure 1 is a sectional view of a monitor containing my apparatus, the principal parts of which are also shown in section, and
Fi 53 i a detached view, on an enlarged scale, of a revolving water-pipe, which will be hereinafter more fully described.
A is one of two boilers, lying side by side, under which is a furnace of ordinary construction, and a is a hollow leg for supporting the boiler-, and conveying water down into a stand-pipe or mud-drum, 2. From the said stand-pipe or drum, water is conveyed through the pipe 6 to flexible hose-pipes c and c, and to a revolving pipe, a, the "how of water being controlled by stop-cocks 1 2 3 4. The revolving pipe at is enclosed in a revolving shot-proof turret, T, which is revolved by means of a crank, t, operating a pinion, t, engaging with an annular series of cogs, u. The revolving pipe cZ turns in a swivel-joint, d, which must he water-tight, and thus revolves with the turret. It bonds so that its nozzle passes out through a slot in the revolving turret, and the nozzle turns on another water-tight swivel-joint at e, so that the nozzle may be elevated 01' depressed at pleasure, "moving in the slotf, which is partly in the side wall and partly in the roof of the turret, said nozzle being elevated and depressed by means of a handle, g. s is a spreader, on the end of a lever, Z, turning on it {3 1. cruin, s", with a depending handle, it. When it is desired to spread the stream of water escaping f th nozzle of pipe d, by elevating the handle it of the lever Z, the spreader s will be brought immediately in front of the nozzle, obstructing the direct fiow of water, and causing it to escape laterally in all directions. The opera tors within the turret can operate both the turret and the revolving pipe with safety during an en agement, being protected by the shot-proof character of the turret. H is a steam-drum, connecting with the upper portion of the boiler, to which a steam-pipe or hose maybe attached, at This steam-pipe may be used for extinguishing fires under the hatches, or in any part of the vessel not easily reached by water, and for operating a siphon-pnmp, either on the some vessel or on a barge alongside. It is a concave or recess in the main deck. for coiling the hose 0, when not in use. The water-pipe 12, extending in opposite directions from the drum 6, is surrounded by a cold-water jacket or condenser, n. It is absolutely necessary that any steam escaping with the water into this pipe should be condensed before reaching the hose 0 and c; otherwise said hose-pipes "will not throw a continuous stream of water, but will merely spit water and steam together. If the distance between the drum 5 and the hose-connections be sutlicientto cause the steam to condense in the pipe 6' without the aid of an auxiliary condenser, the jacket 3n may be dispensed with: but it is essential that said pipe 6 he condelisingpipe, for the reasons above set; forth.
The water in the boilers being heated in a suificient degree, the pressure of the confined steam will cause scalding water to be thrown with great force from the hose 0 or c, or the nozzle of the revolving pipe d, wh ever the appropriate stop-cock is opened, thus furnishing a most cflicient means of repelling boarders in an engagement, as well as extinguishing fires. In like manner, by opening the stop-cock at 2', steam may be used for extinguishing fires or operating a siphon-pump, as heretofore explained. For scrubbing the decks, and cleansing other parts of the vessel, jets of water thrown through the hose-pipes c and 0' are of great utility, doing the'work thoroughly and with great saving of labor.
Having thus fully described my invention, and its mode of operation, what I- claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination of the boiler A, condensing-pipe b, and the flexible hose-pipes c and a connected there with, arranged in a war-vessel substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. In combination with the boiler A and the pipe I), I claim the revolving pipe (I, with nozzle capable of being elevated and depressed by the means and for the purpose substantially as described.
3. In combination with the boilers and revolving pipe, as described, I claim therevolving turret, substan tially as and for the purpose set forth.
4. In combination with the revolving swivel-jointed pipe d, I claim the spreader 8, with lever Z for operating the same, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.-
