Be it known that I, JOSEPH O. DEGKERT, a citizen ofV the United States, residing in the city and countyof Philadelphia,State ofPennsylvania, have invented a new and useful l|nprovementin Binders, of which the following is a speoication.

My invention consists of a novel construction of a binder-frame wherein I provide a cover for the operating parts.

My invention further consists of novel details of construction, all as will be hereinafter set forth and claimed. p

Figure 1 represents a plan view of a binderframe constructed in accordance with my invention and partially broken away for convenience of illustration. Fig. 2 represents a transverse sectionthereof, taken on line ac Fig. l, and in this View the jaws are shown in their closed position. Fig. 3 represents an end view of the binder-frame. Fig. 4 represents a perspective view of a form of cover which may be employed.

Similar numerals of reference indicate-cor-- responding parts inthe figures.

Referring to the drawings, 1 designatesa binder-frame, the same consisting of a back which supports the operative parts thereof. This back is composed of the back proper or outer portion 2 and the end pieces 3 and 4, rigid with relation to said back proper or outer portion 2. Thus the end pieces are a part of the back, and upon said back, or, specifically, in said end pieces in the present instance, is rotatably mounted the threaded rod 5, which carries the traveling arms or travelers 6, the latter being curvedto conform substantially to the contour of the back 2.

The jaws 9 are provided with the inclined ridges 10, which are engaged by suitable ways or recesses 11 on the traveling arms 6, which are mounted upon the threaded portions of the rod 5 and are moved thereby, the rotation of the threaded rod 5 serving to actuate said traveling arms 6 in the desired direction, whereby the opening and closing of the jaws are eifected. The jaws 9 are provided with the wings or end pieces 12, which are pivotally secured at the points 13 to a suitable support-namely, the back, or, specifically,

the end pieces 3 and 4, forminga part of said I claim an especial advantage in the conf struction of the back and its end pieces with relation to the jaws and the manner in which they are pivoted therein, it being seen that in cross-section the main portion of the back is substantially l'lat, with the sides curved. The curvature of these sides and of the jaws is approximately concentric, and the pivots of the jaws are so arranged that when the jaws are moved by thetravelers they move in curved lpaths approximately coincident with their curvature. Thusl am enabled to make a binder with a flat back, and the end pieces are so arranged thattheir edges at the open side of the casing forming tne back include the path of movement of the jaws, so that when the jaws in closing, as seen in Fig. 2, move across the open side of the casing forming the back they do not extend beyond the end pieces to any substantial extent and might be said to be substantially flush therewith or within the confines thereof.

I provide also a ecover for the mechanism for voperating the.ja\vs which extends or covers practicallythe entire open side of the casing. This cover extends between Vthe end pieces of the back and laterally almost to the sides thereof, sufficient spaces being left between the sides of the'cover and the back to permit the jaws to move therethrough. InV the present instance this cover consists of a tray v15, having end pieces 16, by means of which it is rigidly fastened to the end pieces 3 and 4 of the back. Said tray 15 is also provided with side pieces 17, upon whichare mounted the supports 18 for the leaves, said 1 supports consisting of transverse pins secured at their ends to said side pieces 19,' it being noted that said supports 18 engage with the usual slotsin the leaves employed in connection with this kind of binder-frame and serve to hold these leaves in position when the jaws 9 are opened.

In Fig. 4 I provide means for making the supports 1S adjustable longitudinally with respect to the back 2, so that different-sized leaves or leaves with the slots differently spaced can be laccommodated in one binderframc. This adjustability of the supports 1S can be secured in various ways; but as a convenient construction the sido pieces 17 of the cover are slotted longitudinally, as at 19, and the ends of the supports 18 adjustably secured therein by screws 20, passing through these slots 19 and into the ends of the supports 18, so that the side pieces 17 are clamped between the head of the screw and the end of the support when the latter are secured in their adj usted position.

It will of course be evident that various changes may be made by those skilled in the art which will come within the scope of my invention, and I do not, therefore, desire to be limited in everyinstance to the exact construction herein shown and described.

Having thus described myinvention, what Iclaim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. A binder-frame, consisting of a casing, and longitudinally-immovable jaws pivotally mounted ou said casing, the path of movement of said jaws being within the confines of said casing.

2. A binder-frame, consisting of a back having end pieces, and longitudi nally-immovable jaws pivotally supported upon said back, the path of movement of said jaws being substantially within the contines of said end pieces.

3. A binder-frame consisting of a back having end pieces, said back being substantially dat at its cenlral portion and curved at its sides, and curved jaws suitably supported upon said back, the path of movement of said jaws being within the confines of said end pieces, and if continued outwardly would not pass 'beyond the plane of the flat back.

4. A binder-frame consisting ofa back having end pieces, said back being substantially flat at its central portion and curved at its sides, curved jaws suitably mounted in said back, the curvature of said jaws and the sides of `the back being approximately concentric, and said jaws moving in a curved path approximately coincident with theirvcurvature, and within the confines of the end pieces of the back, and if continued outwardly would not pass beyond the plane of the iiat back.

5. In a binder-frame, a back, movable jaws and mechanism for operating the same supported on said back, a cover for said jaws and mechanism, and supports for the leaves carried by said cover.

6. In a binder-frame, a back, movablejaws and mechanism for operating the same supported ou said back, a cover for said jaws and mechanism, and supports for the leaves mounted upon said cover and extending transversely between said jaws.

7. In a binder-frame, a back having end pieces, movable jaws and mechanism for op erating the same supported on said back andA a cover for said jaws and mechanism mounted upon said end pieces.

8. In a binder-frame, a back having end pieces, movable jaws and mechanism for operating the same suitably supported on said back, a cover for said jaws and mechanism, said cover consisting of a plate secured to the end pieces of the back and having side pieces, and supports for the leaves mounted upon said side pieces.

9. In a binder-frame, a back, movable jaws supported thereon,and supports for the leaves adjustable longitudinally with respect to said back.

lO. In a binder-frame, a back, movable jaws mounted thereon, and supports for the leaves independent of said jaws and adjustable longitudinally relative to said back.

1l. A binder-frame consisting of a back, movable jaws and mechanism for operating the same supported on said back, a cover for said jaws and mechanism, and supports for the leaves mount-ed upon said cover and adjustable thereon longitudinally relative to said back.

12. In a binder-frame, a casing, longitudinally-immovable jaws pivotally mounted on said casing and adapted to be moved in curved paths, the movement of which is within tho contines of said casing.

13. In a binder, a back, jaws movably mounted thereon, means for moving said jaws toward and away from each other, and a covering for said means extending laterally substantially across the open side of said back.

let. In a binder, a casing forming the back thereof, the inner side of said casing being open, jaws movably mounted thereon, mechanism for actuating said jaws toward and away from each other, and a cover for said mechanism extending laterally substantially across the open side of said casing, said jaws being adapted to be operated through the spaces formed between said cover and said casing.

l5. In a binder, a back, curved jaws pivotally secured thereon and movable in curved paths approximately coincident with the curve of the jaws, means for moving saidV jaws, said back being adapted to provide a casing inclosing said jaws and means, and a covering for said means.
