UNITED STATES GROUND-ROLLER.
PATENT OFFICE.
FRANCIS B. MOORE, OB METAMORA, ILLINOIS.
SPECIFICATION forming rt of Letters Patent No. 723,896, dated March 31, 1903.
Application filed Angpst 16, 1902. Serial No. 119,960. ,(IIo model.)
To all whom it may concern: V 1 Be it known that I, FRANCIS B. MOORE, residing at Metamora, in the county of-Woodford and State of Illinois, have invented cer- 5 tain new'and nsefulImprovemen'tsin Ground- Rollers, of which the following is a specification.
- My invention relates to thatclass of gron ndrollers having a roll provided with a cylindrical body portion and a spiral flange or flanges encircling such body portion and protruding radially therefrom and having end' trunnions upon which such roll is rotatably mounted.
It relates, further and particularly, to that class of ground rollers having a suitable frame, a cylindrical roll rotatably mounted in such frame, provided with end trunnions and an encircling spiral flange, and a cylindrical roll provided with a smooth peripheral surface and mounted rotatably in suchframe adjacent to and in=sliding contact with the spiral flanges of the flanged roll, whereby the flanged rollis adapted to indent, loosen, and level the surface of the groundto be operated upon and at the same time scrape the accumulations of dirt from the surface of the smooth roll.
It relates, further and finally, to groundrollers provided with a suitable frame having roller-bearings therein, a cylindrical spirallyflanged roll provided with end trunnions and rotatably mounted in hearings in such frame, and a cylindrical smooth-surfaced roll rotatably mounted in such frame adjacent to and in sliding contact with the spiral flanges of the flanged roll, whereby the flanged roll is adapted to indent, loosen, and level the surface of the ground to be operated .upon and at the same time scrape from the peripheral surface of the smooth roll such dirtas may accumulate thereon, and whereby the weight of either roll may be substantially transferred to the other, as circumstances and the varying condition of the ground may require.
My invention consists in the features, combinations, and details of construction hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is 50 a plan view of a roller constructed in accordance with my improvements, and Fig. 2 is a View in cross-sectional elevation taken on line 20f Fig. 1.
In constructing a groundq'oller in'accordance with my improvements I provide asuitable frame portion a, in which is mounted a roll I), haviug, preferably, integral protruding spiral flanges c, encircling the outer peripheny thereof and extending outward radially beyond themain body portion of'such 6o cylinder. This roll is also provided with end trunnions d, rotatably mounted in-bearings e of the frame, which trunnions are preferably integral-with the end portionsfof the roller.
The spiral flanges of this roll are preferably V-shaped and arranged at a distance from each other corresponding substantially to the depth of such flanges, although. these proportions may be changed as desired without departing from the spirit of my invention. second roll h, havi-nga smooth peripheral surface tl, is niounted rotatably in the frame adjacent to theflanged roll, so that its outer peripheral surface is in sliding contact with the spiral flanges of the flanged roll. This second roll is also provided with trunnions cl, corresponding to those of the flanged roll and mounted in bearings e in the frame, similar to those in which the flanged 'roll is mounted.
Both of the rolls above described are pref- 8o er ably of cast metal and may be made hollow and of any desired size and proportions. It will be readily apparent, however, to those skilled in the art thatby this arrangement the weight of either roll may, when desired, be readily transferred to the other'when the conditions of the ground requireisuch additional weight upon either the flanged or the smooth roll. Either roll may tliusbecome as effective for all practical purposes as a single roll of twice its weight. It will also be readily seen that by this arrangement the flanged roll is adapted to indent, out, and loosen the ground and smooth-it to a certain extent, removing the more prominent protnloeran'ces, and at the same time the spiral flanges being in sliding contact with'the smooth roll will scrape therefrom all dirt which may accumulate thereon, thus leaving the smoothing-roll constantlyin condition to efficiently perform [00 its function of compressing and smoothing the ground. A removable sliding finger Z cleans the flanged roll.
In order to enable the weightof either roller to be readily transferred to the other and the apparatus operated in an efficient manner, a handle is provided and connected to the frame portion by means of a socket or brace is, which may beriveted or bolted to the frame in any ordinary and well-known manner.
An apparatus is thus provided by means of which when the conditions of the ground require substantially equal weight in both rollers the weight may be readily equalized. When a certain portion of the ground requires a greater proportion of loosening or stirring, the weight. of the smooth roll may be transferred to the flanged roll, and when it requires more compactness the weight of the flanged roll may be readily transferred to the smoothing-roll in either case by simply raising the roll which is least required.
I claim-- 1. In an apparatus of the class described, the combination of a cast-metal roll'consisting of a cylindrical main body portion having integral spiral flanges extendingoutward radially therefrom, integral end portions provided with trunnions arranged centrally thereof, and a frame in which such roll is 1'0- tatably mounted, and a finger slidably mounted in the frame and extending between the spirals of the flange, substantially as described.
2. In an apparatus of the class described, the combination of a metallic roll having a cylindrical main body portion provided with spiral flanges extending outward radially beyou'd the peripheral surface of such main cylindrical portion and provided with end trunnions, a frame in which such roll is rotatably mounted, and a roll provided with a cylindrical main body portion having a smooth outer peripheral surface in sliding contact with the flanges of the flanged roll and rotatably mounted in such frame, substantially as described.
3. In an apparatus of the class described, the combination of a roll provided with a cylindrical main body portion having integral spiral flanges extending outward from such main body portion, end trunnions for such roll, a frame in which the roll is rotatably mounted, a. roll provided with a cylindrical main body portion having a smooth peripheral surface arranged in sliding contact with the spiral flanges of the flanged roll and rotatably mounted in the frame adjacent to such flanged roll, and a handle rigidly connected with such frame, substantially as described.
4. In an apparatus of the class described, the combination of a frame, a roll rotatably mounted in such frame provided with a cylindrical main body portion having integral V-shaped spiral flanges encircling the outer peripheral surface thereof, integral end portions for such roll provided with integral trunnions, and a roll provided with a cylindrical main body portion having a. smooth outer peripheral surface rotatably mounted in such frame in operative engagement with the flanged roll, substantially as described.
