BORING-MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 723,891, dated March 31, 1903.

To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, ROBERT W. LYLE, acitizen of the United States, residing'at Perth Amboy, in the county of Middlesex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boring-Machines; and I do hereby declare the following to he a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a machine or implement for mortising the ends of underground electrical conduit-sections for the reception of centering or dowel pins.
In the construction of underground electrical conduits consisting of terra-cotta multitubular sections laid and united end to end it is customary to center said sections relatively to one another by means of dowel-pins or tenons which are fitted in mortises or sockets formed centrally in the ends of the conduit-sections. In such conduits it has heretofore been the usual custom to form circular mortises or sockets in the ends of the conduit-sections at a point where the partitions or webs which form the cells or compartments meet.
In an improved con'duitsection invented by me and which will form the subject-matter of a separate application for Letters Patent to be hereinafter filed I form square mor-' It is the object of the present invention to provide a machine or implement for cutting such mortises in the ends of the conduit-sections in an accurate, expeditious, and eflicien-t manner; andto this end my invention consists in the features and in the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter described, and particularlypointed out in the claims following the description, reference being hadto the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, wherein Figure 1' is a vertical'sec'tional View ofmy improved device. Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view thereof. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the auger and chisel. Fig. 4 is a similar view illustrating the guide-blocks, and Fig. 5 is a perspectiveview illustrating one end of my improved conduit-section.
In Fig. 5 of the drawings Ihave shown one of the tile-sections for ,forming my improved underground conduit, each of said sections comprising an earthenware tube a, square or rectangular in cross-section and divided into a plurality of longitudinal cells or compartments 1) by cruciform websor partitions c, which extend inwardly from the centers of the sides of the conduit-section to the center thereof, at which latter point said sections are united and form a-central core (1. It is in the ends of such core in which are formed the square mortises e, that are designed for the reception of thecentering or dowel pins, and, as shown in said Fig. 5 of the drawings, such mortise is formed by removing or cutting away the inner adjacent ends of the webs c.
For the purpose of readily, safely, and accuratelycuttingaway the inner adjacent ends of the webs c I have invented the mechanism which I will now describe,'it only being necessary to preface the description by explaining that the tile or conduit section to be mortised is preferably stood upon end and the mortisin'g-machine applied to the uppermost end thereof and actuated to form the mortise e therein. 7
Referring to Figs. 1 to l: of the drawings, the numeral 1 indicates the base of the machine, which may conveniently'consist of a rectangular frame, which is preferably of approximately the size of the cross-sectional area of the conduit-sections. Attached to the bottom or under side of the base 1 are four depending guide-blocks or lugs 2, said blocks being preferably triangular in shape and having their right-angular sides 3 disposed parallel to one another, as shown, eachlug or guide-block being of such sizethat it will in practice substantiallyfill one-half of.o'ne"of the cells or compartments 1) of the conduitsection. The inner'oradjacent loweredges of the guide-blocks are beveled, as indicated at 2, to facilitate their insertion in the cells or compartments of the conduit sections. Formed centrally in the base 1 is a square aperture 4, the sides of which are parallel with the right-angular sides 3 of the guideblocks 2, and formed in the adjacent corners of said gnideblocks are vertical right-angular grooves 5, that are in alinement with the corners of the aperture 4. Said grooves 5 terminate at their lower ends above the bottoms of the guide blocks 2, thus forming shoulders U, for the purpose hereinafter explained.
Attached rigidlv to the upper side of the base 1 and straddling the aperture 4 is a U- shaped bracket 7, having firmly titted between its vertical sides a transverse brace or cross-bar 7, said cross-bar and the upper end of the bracket being provided with perforations 8 and 9, in which is rotatably arranged a vertically-movable rod or shaft 10, having formed on or fitted to its lower end an anger or boring-tool 1]. The rod'or shaft 10 is provided with an annular shoulder 12, on which rests a yoke comprising a perforated disk 13, provided on two of its opposite sides with vertical npwardly-projecting ears or lugs 14:, to which are rigidly attached two vertically-depending arms 15, which carry at their lower ends a hollow square chisel 16, which tits and is vertically movable within the aperture 4 in the base 1 and surrounds the auger 11. A washer 17 is fitted about the rod or shaft 10 and rests on the disk l3, a pin 18 being fitted in a transverse perfora ion formed in the rod or shaft above the washer and operating, in connection with the shoulder 12, to prevent the chisel from having any vertical movement independently of the anger. As shown in the drawings, the cutting edge of the chisel is arranged slightly below the auger, so as to cut in advance thereof, and thus overcome any liability of the auger chipping, breaking, or cracking the edges of the tile-sections during the operation of the tool.
Arranged around the rod or shaft 10 and resting at its lower end on the cross-bar '7 is a coiled spring 19, the upper end of which bears against a washer 20, fitted on the rod orshaft beneath the upper end of the bracket 7 and held in place thereon by a pin 21, fitted transversely in the rod or shaft above the,
washer. The spring 19 operates to normally hold the auger and chisel elevated, and the pin 21 in addition to holding the Washer in place also operates as a stop to limit the upward movement of the auger and chisel.
Fitted on the upper end of the rod or shaft 10 is a wheel 22, provided with a crank or handle 23, by means of which the rod or shaft and its attached auger may be rotated.
The operation of my device is as follows: The conduit-section to be mortised is stood upon end, and the guide-blocks 2 are fitted in the cells or compartments 1) of the tile or conduit section, thereby centering the base 1 on the tile in such manner that the anger rests directly above the end of the core d, and the sides of the chisel 16 respectively lie above the webs or partitions 0 near the points where the latter join the core d. The operator by means of the wheel or crank 22 rotates the rod or shaft 10 and its attached auger and at the same time forces down the auger against the action of the spring 19. The auger operates to bore a circular hole in the core (Z, and as the anger is fed down the square hollow chisel is fed down simultaneously with and in advance of it and operates to cut away the inner adjacent ends of the Webs or partitions c, and thereby forms a square mortise c centrally in the end of the tile or conduit section. When the cutting edge of the chisel abuts the shoulders U at the bottom of the grooves 5, the downward movement of the chisel and anger is arrested, thus gaging the depth to which the mortise is cut. When the wheel is released, the coiled spring 19 raises the anger and chisel and restores them to their normal positions.
Having described my invention, what I claim is-- 1. In a device for boring holes in the partitions of a tile or conduit section having cellular compartments, thecombination with a mortising-tool, of means carried thereby constructed to enter the cellular compartments of a tile and center the inortising-tool over the partition in which the hole is to be bored, and means for operating the mortising-tool.
2. In a device of the character described, the combination with a base and a mortising device supported thereon, of guides carried by the base and constructed to be fitted within the cellular compartments of a conduit-section and center the base and mortising device on such section, for the purpose specified.
3. In a device of the character described, the combination with a base, and a mortising device supported thereon, of guides on the under side of said base, said guides being arranged. to be inserted in the cellular compartments of a conduit-section and embrace the opposite sides of the webs or partitions thereof to center the base and mortising device on such section, for the purpose specified.
4. In a device of the character described, the combination with a base, and a mortising device supported thereon, of guides on the under side of the base, said guides each comprising a substantially triangular block adapted for insertion in one of the cellular compartments of the conduit-section, the said blocks being so disposed as to form a cruciform space between their adjacent edges for the reception of the ends of the transverse webs or partitions of the conduit-sections, for the purpose specified.
5. In a device of the character described, the combination with a base, and a mortising device supported thereon, of guides on the under side of the base, said guides each comprising a substantially triangular block adapted for insertion in one of the cellular compartments of the conduit-section, the said blocks being so disposed as to form a cruciform space between their adjacent edges for the reception of the transverse webs or partitions of the cond nit-sections, the adjacent edges of the blocks being beveled, for the purpose specified.
6. In a device of the character described, the combination with a centrally-apertured base, and a mortising device supported there-- on and movable through said aperture, of guides arrangedon the base and adapted for insertion in the ends of the cellular compartments of a conduit-section, said guides operating to center the base and mortising device on such conduit-section, for the purpose specified.
7. In a device of the character described, the combination with a centrally-apertured base, and a mortising device supported on said base and movable vertically through said aperture, of guides arranged on the under side of the base and adapted for insertion in the ends of the cellular compartments of a conduit-section, said guides operating to center the base and mortising device on such conduit-section, and means for projecting the mortising device through the said aperture, for the purpose specified.
8. In a device of the character described, the combination with a centrally-apertured base, and a mortising device supported on said base and movable vertically through said aperture, of guides arranged on the under side of the base and adapted for insertion in the ends of the cellular compartments of a conduit-section, said guides operating to center the base and mortising device on such conduit-section, means for projecting the mortising device through the said aperture, and means for returning the mortising device to its normalposition,substantiallyas described.
9. In a device for boring holes in the intersecting portion of the partitions of a tile or conduit section having cellular compartments, the combination with a mortising-tool, of projections carried thereby constructed to straddle and embrace opposite sides of the said partitions to center the mortising-tool over the intersecting portion of the partitions into which the hole is to be bored.
10. In a device of the character described, the combination with a centrally-apertured base, and guides thereon for centering the base on the end of a conduit-section, of an anger slidably mounted in a bracket carried by the base, a hollow chisel surrounding the anger, means for projecting the auger and chisel through said aperture, and means for rotating the auger, substantially as described.
11. In a device of the character described, the combination with a centrally-apertured base, and guides thereon for centering the base on the end of a conduit-section, of an anger slidably mounted on the base, a hollow stantially as described.

14. In a device of the character described, the combination with an apertured support provided with means on its under side constructed to be fitted into the end of a conduitsection to center the support thereon, of a bracket fixed on said support, a rod or shaft vertically and rotatably movable in said bracket, an anger on the lower end ofsaid rod or shaft, a hollow chisel square in crosssection surrounding the auger and verticallyv movable with the latter, means for projecting the chisel and-auger through the saida perture, and means for rotating the latter, substantially as described.
15. In a device of the character described, the combination with an apertured support constructed to be fitted to the end of*a conduit-section, of a bracket fitted on said support and a rod or shaft vertically slidable and rotatably movable in said bracket, an anger on the lower end of said rod or shaft, a hollow chisel, square in cross section, loosely mounted on but vertically movable with therod or shaft, means for projecting the chisel and anger through the said aperture, and means for rotating the rod to which the chisel is affixed, substantially as described.
16. In a device of the character described, the combinationwith an apertured support,

constructed to be fitted to the end of a conduit-section, of a bracket fixed to said support, a rod or shaft vertically movable insaid bracket, an anger on the lower end of said shaft, a hollow chisel, square in cross-section, loosely mounted on but vertically movable with'said rod or shaft, means for projecting the chisel and auger through the said aperture and for rotating the rod to which the anger is attached, and a spring arranged to return the auger and chisel to normal position, substantially as described.
17. In a device of the character described, the combination with an apertured support, constructed to be fitted to the end of a conduit-section, of a bracket fixed to said support, a rod or shaft vertically movable in said bracket, an auger on the lower end of the shaft, a hollow chisel, square in cross-section, loosely mounted on but vertically movable with the rod or shaft, means for projecting the chisel and auger through the said aperture and for rotating the rod to which the auger is fixed, a spring arranged to return the auger and chisel to normal position, and means for limiting the vertical movement of the auger and chisel, substantially as described.
18. In a machine for boring holes in the intersecting partitions of a tile or conduit section having cellular compartments, the combinationwith a base, of a mortising-tool carried by the base, guides on the said base arranged to fit over the end of'said tile or conduit section in such manner as to center the morLising-tool over the partition to be bored and hold the base against lateral movement in either direction, and means for operating the mortising-tool.
