UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SIMON RESEK, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
STOP AND WASTE COCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 722,752, dated March 17, 1903.
Application filed January 5, 1903. Serial No. 137,824. QIo model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, SIMON REsEK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, Guyahoga county, Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stop and Waste Cocks, of which the following is a specification that will enable those skilled in the art to which myinvention pertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof.
My invention relates to stop and waste cocks; and its object is to provide simple and sure means whereby the waste or drainage passages (which permit the water to flow out of a section of pipe beyond the cock from which the supply has been out 01f) may be set to operate to right or left only, as desired, and the position of the sets of the parts for this purpose clearly indicated on the exterior of the cock.
In the accompanyingdrawings I have shown my invention in form and details of construction for carrying it into effect now prepared by me; but doubtless many changes not requiring the exercise of invention might be made therein by a skilful mechanic without departure from the spirit of my invention as set forth in the claims at the end of this specification.
Figure l is a plan view of astop and waste cock embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan section of the same on the line 2 2 of Fig. 3. Fig. 3 is a vertical central section on the lines 3 3 of Figs. 1 and 2. Fig. 4 is a perspective View, partly broken away, of the stop-collar for the top of the plug. Fig. 5 is a similar view of the plug. Fig. 6 is a plan View of the body of the cock without the plug and other movable parts.
The body A of the cock is of the usual construction, with its direct through-passage a a and side drain-opening a. The taper portion of the plug B is also of the usual construction, with its direct through-port b and side drainport I). When the plug is in turned-on positionthat is, with its throughport I) set in line with the through-passages a a of the cock-bodytl1e drain-port b is turned toward the back wall of the plugchamber in the body; but when the plug is turned to cut off the supply its through-port 1) stands transversely across the cock and in register with drain-opening a and communicates with the cut-0E side of the cock through the drain-port b, as is well understood by those skilled in the art to which my invention pertains.
The principal object of my invention is to control the throw or movement of plug so that for one setting it may only be turned to feed or drain in one direction only and that this direction and the positions of the interior parts may be clearly indicated by the exterior parts. To this end I form on the upper end of the plug B an extension 0, having a square socket or recess and a semisquare semicylindrical exterior con figuration,
as shown, the curve of the cylinder intersecting two corners of the square, so that the third corner 0, formed at the intersection of the two flat sides, stands opposite to the sweeps of the curve 0 The square socket c is for the reception of the square shank of a handle or rod by which the plug is operated, and it coincides with the semisquare of the exterior of the extension.- The shank is secured in the socket by means of a set-screw d, which passes into the curved side of the extension and one of the corners of the socket o, as shown. These features of the extension of the plug are so arranged relatively to the ports thereof that the square socket stands diagonally to the through-port bthat is, with two of its corners in line with said port-while the exterior corner 0 stands transversely to said port and in line with the drain-port b, and it therefore serves as an exterior indicator of the position of said drain-port b.
It will be observed that the set-screw 01 enters the socketed extension on the side opposite this corner 0 and that it always stands at the front side of the cock when the water is turned on, and it is therefore accessible at all times from the front, a feature of considerable value when the cock is used in pipes located close to a wall, as in ordinary house service. In order to limit the throw of the valve to a quarter-turn in the direction for which it is set to feed or drain a pipe, I form on the plug at the base of the extension 0 a square flange E. A loose ring or collar F has a square recess f on its inner lower surface adapted to fitonto and engage the flange E on the plug. Through the top of this collar is formed a D-shaped opening, mainly round in configuration, as at f, but having one fiat side f adapted to engage one or the other of the two fiat sides of the plug extension.
At the corners formed by the intersection of the round with fiat side f of this opening I mark the top of the collar with charac-.
ters, preferably R and L, to indicate whether the valve is set to drain right or left. When the collar is set with the character R opposite the point or corner a of the plug extension, the drain-port will go to the right when the water is shut off, and vice versa when the character L is placed opposite to said point or corner 0'.
The loose collar F has adepending flange f on the inner side of which is a fixed lug f.
The top of the cock-body is formed with a flanged extension G, which is cut away on the top at one side to form a recess g, adapted to receive the lug of the loose collar and of sufficient extent to permit said lug to swing between its walls g g a quarter-revolution when the plug is operated to turn the water on or off.
The square flange E on the plug fitting into the square recess f of the loose collar compels the collar to turn with the plug, and as the rotation of the collar is limited by the play of its lugf in the recess 9 at the top of the cook it likewise limits the movement of the plug.
The square flange E on the plug acts further to close the space below the opening in the collar F against the passage of dirt and to deflect any fine sittings outwardly and away from the plug-socket in the body of the cock. The depending flange f also serves to protect this socket when the cock is used on underground pipe-service.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a stop and waste cook the combination of a cock-body constructed with the usual through and drain passages and having a recessed flange on its top side about the plugopening, the plug with the usual through and drain ports and having a square flange near its top, a socketed extension above said flange seniisquare and semicylindrical in shape, with a loose collar having a D-shaped opening to fit over the plug extension with its fiat side against one of the flat sides thereof, a square recess to fit the square collar on the plug and a depending flange with a lug adapted to operate in the recess at the top of the cock-body substantially as set forth.
2. In a stop and waste cock the combination of a plug having a through-opening and a side drain-opening, a socketed extension on the top of the plug that is semisquare and semicylindrical in configuration with the point or corner of the square side located over and in alinement with the drain-port of the plug substantially as set forth.
3. In a stop and waste cook the combination of a cock-body having the usual through and drain passages, the plug having the usual through and drain ports, a socketed extension on the top of the plug that is semisquare and semicylindrical in shape with the point or corner of the square side located over and in alinement with the drain port, a loose collar having a D-shaped opening adapted to fit over the plug extension with its fiat side against one of the flat sides of the extension with indicating characters at each end of the fiat side of said opening and means whereby the throw of said collar is limited by stops on the cock-body, substantially as set forth. In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
