UNITE STATES PATENT CFFICE.
HERBERT L. STILLMAN, OF VVESTERLY, RHODE ISLAND.
CARRIAGE- RAILWAY.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 722,641, dated March 10, 1903. Application filed April 10, 1 902. Serial No. 102,285. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HERBERT L. STILLMAN, a resident of Westerly, in the county of Washington and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Carriage-Railways; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which forms a part of this specification.
This invention has relation to improvements in rails for fiangeless wheels, but is more particularly adapted for automobiles and other wheels having tires containing rubher and requiring a higher rail-guard to hold them in place than wheels with only metal tires.
The invention will be fully understood when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing and from the following descrip tion, in which the figure is a view of a crosssection of a railway with my improvements attached.
Referring by letter, A shows body of rail of Z-bar form; B, guard-leg of the same; 0, opposite leg; D, stringer; E, retaining-lip of rail; F, cross-tie.
In'operation after the cross-ties have been laid and the stringers with the broad side laid upon them I lay the Z-bar rail upon the stringers and secure the whole with the spikes. It will thus be seen that a light rail of this form with great marginal and angular strength is secured and an economical railway produced.
Having described my improvements, I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent The improved carriage-railway herein described, consisting of the rail of flat plate metal having an outward flange turned downward, and inward flange turned upward, of approximate thickness of the tread of said rail, combined with the supporting-stringers, and secured by the fastenings and cross-ties, as specified.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set,
my hand this 9th day of April, A. D. 1902.
HERBERT L. STILLMAN.
In presence of- HOWARD E. BAELoW, BENJ. ARNOLD.
