TYPE-WRITING MACHINE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 722,625, dated March 10, 1903.

Be it known that I, GEORG PODLICH,a subject of the King of Prussia, German Emperor, residing at 2a Sophrenstrasse, Berlin, Prussia, Germany, have invented Improvements in Type-Writing Machines, of which the fol lowing is a specification.

My invention consists in the features and combination of parts hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is an end elevation. Fig. 2 is a plan view. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the plate which carries the device. Fig. 4 is a plan view of a modification. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of part of a type writer carriage with the device in place. Fig. 6 is a transverse sectional View of the device.

The device consists of a plate a, adapted to be attached to a carriage of a type-writer and havingaslit d and a second slit cent of alinement longitudinally with each other. Adjacent the slit 6 bearings or ears e are formed, and in these a shaft 9 is journaled, the said shaft being extended beyond the said ears and having thereon a feeler-finger b, which extends from the shaft and has its edge overlying the slit d. This feeler-finger is adapted to rest on the paper and be thus prevented from passing through the slit as long as the paper is passing over the plate Ct; but as soon as the end of the paper is reached the feelerfinger will pass down through the slit (1 under the action of the spring f, which is coiled around the shaft g, and this will cause an arm a to be raised from the substantially horizontal position shown in Figs. 5 and 6 to a substantially vertical position, so as to display a visualsignal 0', carried by the said arm. The position of the device in relation to the paper-roll is shown more clearly in Fig. 6, which also illustrates one way of securing the device in place by means of a spring-clamp 2, provided on the device, which grips over two pins in k on the carriage, the said clamp being supported on the plate a.

I do not wish tolimit myself to any particular form of fastener means.

In Fig. 4 I show a joint at 9 in the shaft g, so that the feeler-finger b may be turned upwardly out of the way when placing the paper in the machine to manipulate the paper in any Way.

As shown in Fig. 5, the arm 0 may be bent, so as to avoid striking the releasing-lever of the carriage.

What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. As an attachment for a type-writer, a plate, adapted to be attached thereto, and having two slots therein at d and 6 out of line with each other, a shaft g extending over the slot e, a tongue I) on the said shaft having its end reaching over the slot d, a spring about the shaft tending to force the tongue through the slot and a visual signal on the shaft, substantially as described.

2. In combination with a type-writer carriage, a shaft, a plate adapted to be attached to the carriage and carrying the said shaft, an arm attached to the shaft and carrying a visual signal, a tongue on the shaft to engage the paper, said visual signal being disposed in a horizontal plane when the tongue is bearing on the paper, substantially as described.

3. In combination, a plate adapted to be attached to a type-writer carriage, a tongue, a shaft on the plate having a joint in its length and carrying the tongue and a spring for 0p eratingthe shaft, the said joint permitting the shaft with the tongue to be turned up, substantially as described.
