PATENTED MAR. 10, 1903Y J. J. MURPHY. ELECTRIC yCURRENT CONTROLLER.

Rol MODEL.A f7-f UNITED STATES PATENT EEICE.
JAMES J. MURPHY, OF .JERSEY CITY, NEW JERSEY.
ELECTRIC-CURRENT CONTROLLER.
SPECIFICATION forming' part of Letters Patent No. 722,453, dated 'March 10, 1903.
Application led August 25,1902.
To a/ZZ whom it may con/cern.-
Beitknown that I, JAMES J. MURPHY, a citi- Zen of the United States, residing at Jersey City, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Electric-CurrentControllers, of which the following is a full and complete specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The object of this invention is to provide an improved current controller for use in connection with electric lights, motors, and other electric apparatus; and with these and other objects in view my invention consists in a device of the class specied constructed as hereinafter described and claimed. The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which-` Figure 1 is a side view of my improved current-controller; Fig. 2, a View at right angles thereof; Fig. 3, a section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2, and Fig. 4 a section on the line 4. 4. of Fig. 1.
In the practice of my invention I provide a device of the class speciiied which comprises a fiat body portion a, preferably composed of two side pieces a2 and a center piece a3, said parts being all preferably composed of non-conducting material and being secured together by screws b or in any other desired manner. One edge of this device is preferably tapered, as shown, and adjacent to the opposite edge is a longitudinal bore or passage a5, adapted to receive a cylindrical plug o, which is preferably less in diameter than said bore or passage. Arranged in the opposite sides of the body portion ct are contact wires, rods, tubes, or similar devices d, which project into the bore or passage a5, and with which are connected wires e, which are carried out through the tapered side a4, and all the wires at one side of the devices are connected in a single current-conveyer Aor cable f, while those at the other side are connected in a similar current-conveyer or cable f.
In practice the current enters the controller through one of the cables f and leaves Serial No. 120,875. (No model.)
through the other, and it will be apparent that the amount of current leaving the controller will depend upon the extent to which the plug c is forced into the bore or passage d5. By means of the plug c two or more pairs of the Contact devices d and said devices of any pair may be connected by simply forcing said plug into the bore or passage a5, and when said plug is fully in said bore or passage all the wires of one side will be inelectric connection with all the wires of the other side, and the current in one of the cablesfwill leave the controller through the other cable. When the plug c is partially withdrawn, only a part of the pairs of contacts d will be in operative connection, and it will be apparent that the current passing therethrough or the amperage thereof will be less, according to the resistance offered by the contacts d, branch wires, and plug connecting the saine, and said contact devices may be made of any diameter or shape in order to offer greater or less resistance, as desired. If the contact devices be tapered and the small ends connected with the branch wires, the resistance will be greater and the amperage less and the danger of burning out said branch wires or contact devices will be overcome.y
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is,-
1. In an electric-current controller, a body portion composed of insulating material and provided near one edge thereof with a longitudinal bore or passage, said body portion being provided in each side thereof with contact devices which are arranged in pairs therein and which project into said bore or passage, and wires connected with said contact devices at each side and passed out through the edge opposite said bore or passage, all the wires of each side being connected in a cable, substantially as shown and described.
2. A current-controller comprising a body portion composed of insulating material and provided near one edge thereof with a longitudinal bore or passage, said body portion being provided in each side thereof with contact devices which are arranged in pairs therein, and which project into said bore or passage, and wires connected with said contact devices at each side and passed out through IOO the edge opposite said bore or passage, all mynvention Ihave signed my name,in presthe Wires of each side being Connected in a ence of the subscribing witnesses, this 23d Cable, and a plug adapted t0 be inserted into day of August, 1902. said bore o1' passage and connect said pair or JAMES J. MURPHY.
5 pairs of Contact devices, substantially as l shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as Witnesses:
