SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 722,281, dated March 10, 1903.

Be it known that I, HARRIET BROWN, a sub ject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Woonsocket, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented new and useful Improvements in Fountain-Brushes, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to fountain-brushes, and has for its object to provide a device through the medium of which a stove may be quickly and easily blackened and polished, and this without liability of the operator soiling her hands or getting blacking on her clothes.

lVith the foregoing in mind the invention will be fully understood from the following description and claims when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a longitudinal vertical section of a device constituting the preferred embodiment of my invention; Fig. 2, a transverse section taken at right angles to Fig. 1 and in the plane indicated by the line 2 2 of said figure, and Fig. 3 a detail horizontal section taken in the plane indicated by the line 3 3 of Fig. 1.

Similar letters of reference designate corre sponding partsin all ofthe views of the drawings, referring to which- A is the hollow body or reservoir of my improved device, which is preferably of sheet metal and has a filling-opening a, normally closed by a screw-cap b; B, a brush secured to the body A at the under side thereof; 0, a crank-shaft journaled in a sleeve 0, carried by the cap I) and removably stepped in a socket (Z, fixed on the bottom of the body; D D, dasher-blades fixed on the shaft within the body; E E, vertically-disposed dischargeconduits extending through the bottom of the body; F, a valve connected by springpending from the valve, and two daubers, it is obvious that but one of each may be employed without involving a departure from the scope of my invention.

In practice the ingredients necessary to make liquid blacking are placed in the body A through the opening a, after which the opening is closed and the shaft 0 is rotated, so as to thoroughly mix the ingredients. WVith this done the device is ready for use. In using the device the end of the body over the daubers I is pressed downwardly, when in virtue of the valve being connected to the daubers the valve will be opened and liquid blacking permitted to pass down through the conduits E and on the daubers. When the daubers are supplied with blacking to the extent desired, such pressure is removed to permit the springs to close the valves, after which the blacking is spread over a stove through the medium of the daubers and the stove is polished through the medium of the brush B. Incident to the blacking and polishing of the stove the valve is opened in the manner described whenever it is necessary to supply the daubers with blacking.

It will be readilyappreciated from the foregoing that with myimproved device a woman is enabled to mix the blacking and quickly and easily blacken and polish a stove witl1- out liability of soiling her hands or clothes, which is a desideratum.

WVhile I prefer to mix the ingredients entering into blacking in the body A, as described, it is obvious that prepared blacking may be placed in the body and applied to a stove through the medium of my improvements without departure from the scope of my invention. In either case it will be observed that the agitator will enable the operator to keep the blackingina liquid and well; mixed state.

The agitator'i. a, the shaft 0 and its appurtenances-is preferably removable from the body in order to facilitate cleaning of the device when necessary.

I have entered into a detailed description of the construction and relative arrangement of the parts embraced in the present and preferred embodiment of my invention in order to impart a full, clear, and exact understanding of the same. I do not desire, however,

to be understood as confining myself to such specific construction and arrangement of parts, as such changes or modifications may be made in practice as fairly fall within the scope of my invention as claimed.

Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,

1. A device for blackening and polishing stoves comprising a hollow body having a discharge-passage in its bottom, a valve for controlling said passage, a dauber connected with the valve and arranged below the bottom of the body and the discharge-passage in said bottom, and a brush carried by the body and arranged below the bottom thereof at the side of the dauber.

2. A device for blackening and polishing stoves comprising a hollow body having a discharge-passage in its bottom, a valve for controlling said passage, a stem connected to the valve and extending through the discharge-passage, and having an upwardly-directed hook at its lower end, a dauber arranged on said hook, and a brush carried by the body and arranged below the bottom thereof at the side of the dauber.

3. A device for the purpose described comprising a hollow body having discharge-passages in its bottom, a valve-strip arranged over said passages, spring-strips connecting said valve-strip and the body, stems extending from the valve-strip through the passages and having outwardlydirected hooks disposed below the body, and daubers held on the stems by the hooks thereof.

4. The device described comprising a hollow body having discharge-passages in its bottom, and also having a filling-opening in its top, and a removable cap closing the same, a shaft journaled in the cap andin a bearing at the bottom of the body; said shaft being equipped with agitating means, and being removable with the cap, a valve-strip arranged over the discharge-passages, springstrips connecting the valve-strip and the body, and disposed at opposite sides of the shaft, depending stems extending from the valvestrip and through the discharge passages, daubers carried by said stems, and a brush arranged at the under side of the body, and connected thereto.
