The drum 8 is provided with suitable bearings in the standards 32, and the driving- Wheel 30 is held reliablyin engagement with the contiguous truck-wheel by means of the compensatingr blocks 34 and the controllingsprings 35, said parts being suitably mounted in said standards 32, as clearly shown in the drawings. The shaft 31, therefore, is so mounted that it may be readily raised bythe lever 36, so as to bring the wheel 30 out of engagement with the contiguous truck-wheel 1, the said controlling-lever 36 being connected to the shaft 31 by means of the link 33. The said lever 36 is connected, as shown in Fig. 1, to a contiguous part of the frame 2, while the free end thereof is provided with the controlling-handle 37. The free end of the lever 36 is bent to occupy a plane oblique with respect to the vertical plane of the standard 38, said standard comprising an inverted- U-shaped bar having one side thereof provided upon its inner edge with a rack-bar 39, adapted to engage the lower edge of the lever 36, and it is therefore obvious by raising the free end of the lever the driving-Wheel 30 may be lifted out of contact with the contiguous truck-wheel 1, thereby leaving the drum to be freely unwound or rotated manually orby the simple act of driving the motor forward. Upon the return trip, however, of the motor the free end of the lever is lowered, so as to bring the wheel 30 in contact With the truckwheel, when the drum will be rotated with sufficient speed to compensate for the travel of the motor, and thereby wind the cable upon the drum, so that the same will be all taken up out of the way of the motor. By the appliance thus provided or the equivalent thereof the motor may be freely directed back and forth over lthe track Without any care on the part of the operator being directed to the cable 7, inasmuch as said cable will be stored and unwound automatically as required.
In Fig. 5 is illustrated the preferred means which may be employed to more reliably compensate for the winding and unwinding of the cable as it is stored or paid out incident to use, inasmuch as it will be observed that the truck-wheel 1 may be provided upon its outer edge with the extension or flange 40, having a plurality of apertures 41, designed to coperate with the flange 42, carried upon the outer edge or side of the driving-wheel 30, said ange 42 being provided with a plurality of lugs or teeth 43, designed to take into the apertures 41, provided in the-fiange 40. Since the diameters of the flanges 40 and 42 are identical in extent and the diameter of the winding-drum 8 formed accordingly, the rotation of the carrying-truck wheel 1 will insure that the drum 8 will be rotated so as to properly pay off and wind up the cable 7 as required incident to use.
It will be understood that various substitutes and equivalents may be employed in materializing this invention Without departing from the spirit or scope thereof, and it is therefore desired to comprehend in this application all equivalents. The carrying-frame may also be provided with the usual trolleypole 44, whereby the current may be directed from the trolley-wire 24, as is common. When, however, the motor is to be employed upon laterals unprovided with a trolley-wire, the cable 7 will be employed as hereinbefore specified. By the employment of this motor and compensating actuating-cable it is possible to avoid the use of mules or other animals now commonly employed to draw the cars from the laterals onto the main track.
The invention having thus been fully set forth, what is claimed is- 1 The herein-described traction device comprising suitable frame and carrying-truck, combined with a motor operatively connected to said truck, a cable-carrying drum rotatably mounted upon the said frame and operatively connected with the motor, a compensating cable connected to said drum and thus indirectly placed in communication with said motor, a controller for said motor, a compensating driving-Wheel havinga shaft mounted in movable bearings, a lever pivotally mounted upon the truck and a link connecting said lever with the shaft of the compensating wheel, all substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. In a device of the character described, the combination with a: carrying-truck and a motor operatively connected therewith, of a cable-carrying drum rotatably mounted upon the truck and operatively connected with said motor,acompensatingwheel mounted on a shaft mounted in a movable bearing, a piyoted lever and a link connecting the same with said movable shaft, a compensating cable connected to said drum and thus indirectly placed in communication with said motor, a controller forming a connecting-link in said motor-cable and graduating devices for cooperation therewith.
