UNITED STATES- PATENT OFFICE.
ALBERT A. STEPZINSKI, PEORIA, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO UNION HARDWARE COMPANY, OF TORRINGTON, CONNECTICUT.
SKATE-SHARPEN ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 721,843, dated March 3, 1903. Application filed July 3. 1902. Serial No. 114,320. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern..-
Be it known that I, ALBERT A. STEPZINSKI, a resident of Peoria, in the county of Peoria and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Skate- Sharpeners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in skate-Sharpeners, the object of the invention being to provide an improved holder in which a file can be readily secured and removed when desired, and which will also serve as a guide to insure the proper cutting of the skate-runner,and,further, to so construct and support the file that all four of its faces can be utilized in the same holder.
With this object in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts, as will be more fully hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a View in elevation illustrating my improvements. Fig. 2 is a view in section of the same. Fig. 3 is an end view. Fig. 4 is a view showing the holder open to receive the file, and Figs. 5 and 6 are views of a modification.
1 represents my improved holder, which comprises a sheet of spring metal. bent first into general rectangular shape to receive a file 2 and provided with approximately parallel wings 3 to receive and guide the skate runner and preferably slightly flared at their ends to facilitate the admission of the runner. To the back of this holder 1 a handle 4 is pivotally connected by a rivet 5 and extends along the back to one end of the holder, where it is made with a finger 6 to partially close the end of the holder and lock the file therein and a short flange 7 is provided at one side of the handle to limit the pivotal movement thereof and prevent it from being swung too far when moved to its locking position. Alarge, preferably hollow, handhold 8 is made integral with the handle to facilitate its operation in removing and adjusting the file and in sharpening a skate.
The outer end of the holder is upset or other contour desired. To remove the file, it
is simply necessary to swing the handle to one side, when the handle can be Withdrawn through the handle end and can be turned to the face desired and again inserted and secured in place by swinging the handle back to its locking position.
In Figs. 5 and 6 I have illustrated a modified form of my invention in which the handle 12 is shown rigidly secured to the back of file-holder 3 by means of rivets 14, and a setscrew 15 is passed through the handle and projects across the inner end of the file-holder to hold the file securely therein. When it is desired to remove the file, this set-screw must ofcourse be unscrewed out of the path of the file.
Other changes might be made in the general form and arrangement of parts without departing from my invention, and hence I do not limit myself to the precise construction set forth, but consider myself at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fall Within the spirit of my invention.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as'new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A skate-sharpener, comprising a fileholder, and a handle movably connected to the holder and provided with means to lock the file in the holder.
2. A skate-sharpener, comprising a fileholder having wings to guide the skate against the file, a handle pivoted to the holder, and means depending from the handle to lock the file in the holder.
3. A skate-sharpener, comprising a fileholder having wings to guide the skate against the file, a pivoted handle having means to lock the file in the holder, and means for limiting the pivotal movement of the handle.
4. A skate-sharpener, comprising a fileholder composed of sheet metal bent into approximately the shape shown and described,
carried by said handle and normally disposed behind one end of the file and means for permitting the adjustment of said device to allow the withdrawal of the file longitudinally from the holder.
In ,testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ALBERT A. STEPZINSKI.
