SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 720,804, dated February 17, 1903. Application iled August 18, 1902. Serial No. 120,105. (No model.)
To a/ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, I-IERY J. I-IERT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of 5 Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pneumatic-Despatch- Tube Systems, of which the following is a specification.
In pneumatic-despatch-tube systems (lifti- Io culty is experienced at the desk or stationterminals by reason of the tendency of a back' pull upon the carrier immediately upon the opening of the discharge-valve, so that in or-` der t be successfully dischargedfrom the I system a carrier must have snfticient momentum to overcome this back pull. Difii` culty is also experienced by reason of collision of two carriers at a junction.
The object of my present-.invention is to 2o provide a terminal in which the construction is such that there will continue to be a pressure exerted upon the carrier even after the discharge-valve has been opened by the movement thereof and to provide an improved 2 5 automatic stop mechanism for junctions.
The accompanying drawing illustrates my invention, the View being an inside ehevation of one vertical half of my improved junction. The junction is formed of a mating pair of 3o sections forming a pair of joining channels 18 and 19, channel 19 being curved and leading into the channel 1S. Formed behind the point of junction is a chamber 20, within which is pivoted a stop-arm 2l, normally but yieldingly projected into channel 19 by any suitable means, such as a spring 22. Arm 2l carries a cam or linger 23, which engages aV finger 24, carried by a stop-arm 25, pivoted at 26 in chamber 20 and having its free end 4o projected towardh the rear. Arm 25 carriesa projecting portion 27, which plays between a pair of stops 28 and 29 to limit the throw of the parts.
In operation arm 2l lies normally projected linto the line of channel 19, its ringer 23 engaging finger 24 of arm 25 and holding said arm out of the line of channel 1S. A car passing through channel 19 engages arm 21 before it makes the point of junction with channel 19 and throws said arm to the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 4L, this movement projecting arm 25 into the line of channel 18, so that ii' a car should arrive through said channel it would be blocked until after the passage of the carrier through the channel 19, whereupon spring 22 would operate to throw the part to normal position, so as to withdraw arm 25 and allow the car in channel 18 to proceed. It a car should first arrive through channel 18, arm 2l could not be displaced until after said car had passed beneath arm 25, arxn 21 thus serving as a block for the car in channel 19.
I claim as my invention- 1. In a junction for pneumatic-despatchtube systems, the combination with a pair of converging carrier-channels, of a stop-arm normally but yieldingly projected into one channel, a ringer carried by said arm, a second stop-arm adapted to be projected into the other channel, and a nger carried by the second stop-arm and engaging the linger of the iirst stop-arm, for the purpose set forth. 2. In a junction for pneumatic-despatchtube systems, thev combination with a pair of converging carrier-channels, of a stop-arm normally but yieldingly projected into one channel, a second stop-arm vpivotally supported with its free end projecting in the direction of arrival of a carrier through the other channel, and intermediate connections between the two arms whereby the second arm is moved and controlled by the first.
