TROLLEY FOR TRAVERSING CRANES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 719,558, dated February 3, 1903. Application filed August 13, 1901. Serial No. 71,92 (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, OTTO BRIEDE and HANS WILHELM FRIDERICHSEN, subjects of the King of Prussia, German Emperor, and residents of Benrath, near Dusseldorf, in the Province of the Rhine, German Empire, have jointly invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trolleys for Traversing Cranes, of which the following is an exact specification.
Our invention relates to improvements in trolleys for traversing cranes.
In raising loads by means of trolleys it is not always possible to bring the trolley in a position in which the drum or chain-wheel stands exactly vertically above the center of gravity of the load to be raised. In consequence hereof the chain or rope will not be in a vertical position and the load will begin to swing as soon as the same is raised. By this disadvantage the use of the so-called gall-chains in the trolleys hitherto constructed is practically impossible, as by the swinging of the load the links of the chain are deformed, whereby these links will easily break. In order to do away with this disadvantage, we provide our new construction, in which the hoisting-drum or chain-wheel is journaled in the trolley in that way that it can follow the oscillations of the load.
Our invention is representedin the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a side view of our new construction. Fig. 2 is a back view, and Fig. 3 a plan view, of the same, while Fig. 4 is a back view of the trolley in a characteristic position of the same.
In the frame a, which may be of any convenient form,the chain-wheel b is situated. This chain-Wheel is rotated by means of the electromotor 0 under mediation of the gearing d. The frame a, in which the whole hoisting mechanism is situated, is journaled, by means of the two pivots e, in the axles y, connecting the wheels f of the trolley, so that the whole frame a can oscillate on its pivots a. It is hereby attained thatin case the center of gravity of the load is not situated exactly vertically under the chain-wheel b the whole frame awill adopt an inclined position, as shown in Fig. 4, hereby avoiding a deformation of the chain-links.
It will be understood that the construction of the trolley and the hoisting mechanism can be modified in diflerent ways-so, for instance, it would be sufficient to arrange only the chain-wheel b so as to be able to oscillate and to rigidly connect the gearing with the axles of the trolley and to transfer the rotations of the electromotor to the chain wheel I) by means of bevel-gears, a worm and wheel,or the like. 7
Having thus fully described the nature of our said invention, what We desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is-- 1. In a trolley for traversing cranes, the combination of the trolley proper, a motor, a chain-wheel journaled in a part connected to the frame of the trolley by means of pivots, so as to be capable of being oscillated and means for transmitting the movement of the motor to this chain-wheel, substantially as described and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a trolley for traversing cranes, the combination of the trolley proper with a hoisting apparatus, journaled in the axles connecting the trolley-wheels so as to be capable of being oscillated as and for the purpose specified.
