To all whmn, it ntay concern:
Be it known that l, FRIEDRICH BUSOHMANN, a subject of the King of Prussia, German Emperor, residing at Liibtheen, in the Grand Duchy of Mecklenburg-Schwerin, in the Empire of Germany, have invented a 'new and useful Improvement in Deep-Boring Tools, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in deep-boring tools; and the object of my improvement is to provide the deep-boring tool with an oblique reaction surface or plate for producing a reaction of the water during the percussion or descent of the tool, whereby the latter is pressed with a certain amount of force against the wall of the bore-hole, bore, or shaft. The said oblique reaction surface or plate can he made in various manners, according to the size, shape, and construction of the deep-boring tool, as will be explained hereinafter with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is an elevation of a shaft-boring tool provided with a separate rectangular reaction-plate. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the rectangular reaction-plate. Fig. 3 is an elevation of an ordinary small mining-borer provided with an oval reaction-plate and a section through the bore-hole. Fig. 4 is an end view of this borer and a crosssection through the bore-hole. Fig. 5 is a side View of a small mining-borer so enlarged as to form itself a reaction-surface of about triangular shape, and Fig. 6 is an end view of this borer and a cross-section through the bore-hole.
In making deep horings, and more particularly when making shafts in which the work has to be done under water, it is often found necessary to press the boring-tool during its percussion or descent against the wall of the bore-hole, bore, or shaft with a certain amount of force with the object of either making the bore hole or shaft larger than the diameter of the boringtool or more effectively reducing and removing projections,deviations, or deflections in the bore-hole or bore-shaft by means of ordinary borers, or, further, in the event of any fracture of the boring-tools of pressing the falling tool against the bore hole Serial No. 120,389. or shaft wall, causing the tool to catch against the wall, and thus checking and braking the -fall of the same.
Figs. 1 and 2 show a well-known shaft-boring tool, which consists of a bot-tom cutter b and an external cutter 0, made in one piece with the tapering shaft d; also, a frame formed by a cross-head f and two rods 6 e for stiffening the whole. For producing the lateral pressure mentioned above I provide this tool with an oblique reaction-plate a,of rectangular-shape, on the tapering shaft d. This reactionplate a may be made separate and affixed to the shaft d in any suitable manner. It may he provided with a central hole for allowing of the shaft (1 passing through and riveted on the same by means of angle-irons h h.
From anexamination of Figs. 1 and 2 it will be evident that during the percussion or descent of the boringtool the water contained in the shaft will offer a certain resistance to the reaction-plate a, so that the horizontal component of this resistance will press the boring-tool in the direction from right to left against the wall of the shaft with a more or less constant force. The external cutter 0 will then cut a hole the diameter of Which is a little larger than that of the tool. In case the rod carrying the boring-tool should break, the external cutter a will catch against the shaft-wall during the fall of the boring-tool, and thus check and brake the further movement.
Figs. 3 and 4 show an ordinary mining-borer Z), provided with a thickened part 2" and a washing or rinsing hole g. The oblique reaction-plate c is made oval, so as to nearly fill up the bore-hole and to increase the reaction in proportion to the weight of the borer and the boring-rod, if this should be necessary. The reaction-plate a is preferably made in one piece, with a nave h, by means of which it can be secured properly on the shaft cl of the tool 1).
Figs. 5 and 6 show an ordinary mining-borer b the rear part of which is enlarged, so as to form a reaction-surface a which in this case is of triangular form. Otherwise this boringtool is substantially the same as before, and
its parts are denoted by the same letters, only that the index 1 has been changed to 2.
As already mentioned in the introductory part, the reaction surface or plate according to my invention can be applied to all kinds of deep-boring tools, and therefore it will re- 1. A deep-boring tool having an oblique reaction-surface, substantially as set forth.
