SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 718,849, dated January 20, 1903.
Application filed May 27, 1902. Serial No- 0 4 (N0 mod To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, DAVID ORMSBEE KNEE- LAND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Miami, in the Ottawa Nation, Indian Territory, have invented a new and useful Churn, of which the following is a specification.
In this device is comprised an oblong creamboX Without interior obstructions or paddles and mounted upon rocker-arms or sway-bars and adapted to be vibrated longitudinally, whereby a compound movement is imparted to the cream within the cream-box and the separation accomplished entirely by the 00- action of the cream particles and the friction against the smooth interiorsides of the creambox.
Other novel features of the device will appear in the annexed description.
In the drawings illustrative of the invention, Figure 1 is a longitudinal vertical section. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation. Fig. 3 is a perspective view, enlarged, of a portion of one Fig. 4: is a vertical transverse sectional view taken on the line at l: in Fig. 1.
The base or supporting frame is indicated at and is provided with brackets 11, Sup porting a transverse shaft 12, the latter having a balance-wheel13 at one end and a gearpinion 1% at the other end, the gear-pinion being indicated only by dotted lines in Fig. 1.
A counter-shaft (indicated at 15 in Fig. l) is mounted on one of the brackets 11 and supports an internal gear-wheel 16, engaging the pinion 14, by which means a rapid motion will be imparted to he shaft 12. The shaft 12 is provided with a central crank 12, the object to be hereinafter explained.
The churn portion of the device is composed of a box 17, preferably made oblong and supported upon rocking standards 18 18, the latter being preferably formed of inverted- U-shaped rods supporting the bottom of the churn bytheir curved portions at 19 19 and having their leg portions turned outward and connected at 19 19 to the base 10. The standards 18 18 are connected, respectively, to the churn and to the base by straps, (indicated at 20 21,) so that the bars will freely oscillate in their bearings.
Connecting the crank 12 and the shaft 12 with the bottom of the churn is a connecting-rod 22, which is coupled to the churn by a bearing 22, the bearing being extended across beneath the transverse portion of the rocking support 18, and thereby affording additional support thereto. By this means it will be readily understood that the revolution of the shaft 12 will cause the churn to be vibrated horizontally and in the arc of a circle of which the bearings 19 are the center.
The cover of the churn or cream-box 17 is represented at 23 with a shoulder 24, extending downward into the body of the churn for a short distance, and with a packing 25 of some suitable flexible material, such as cork, which will not be injurious to the cream or butter. The cover 23 will be provided with a central aperture 26 to provide for ventilation and will be provided with a plug or other closure.
Attached to one side of the casing 17 is a plate 27, having an aperture in its upperend above the line of the cover 23, and on the opposite side of the casing will be attached another plate 28, having a hooked upper end projecting above the line of the cover 23, the aperture in the plate 27 affordinga support for a clamp-rod 29 at one end, while the hooked end of the plate 28 afiords a support for the other end of the same rod, the hooked end affording means whereby the rod may be inserted or removed. By this simple means the cover is firmly supported in place and Will not be jarred loose by the rapid motion of the churn, but which will be easily removed or attached when desired.
IVithin the casing 17 is inserted a perforated movable false bottom 30, provided with an upturned rim and having a handle 31, by which it may be removed from the churn. The upturned rim is indicated at 30 This false bottom is thus easily removed from and inserted into the casing 17 and affords a ready means for the removal of the butter after it has been produced, and by means of the perforations a perfect drainage medium is provided. This is a very simple and efficient adjunct to the device and adds materially to its efficiency, as the butter can thereby be removed bodily from the churn and drained without handling it.
A fly-wheel 13 is fixed to one end of the power-shaft 12, and the hub thereof is pro- ICO vided with an outwardly extending end, which has short radial arms 13 extending therefrom and to which are detachably connected blades or wings 32. These wings increase in width from their inner to their outer ends and extending beyond the rim of the Wheel13 are twisted at an angle to the Wheel to form a wind-wheel, upon which the wind will act to revolve the shaft 12 and operate the churn. At their inner ends each of these blades 32 is provided with a spaced plate 32, bent around parallel to the body of the blade and affording means for attachment to the spokes or arms 13 of the fiy-wheel, a setscrew 32 being provided for each to enable them to be clamped to the spokes or arms. The wings 32 may be made of any required size in proportion to the size of the cream-box 17, so that the latterwill be operated with the requisite speed. The blades 82 form an auxiliary operating means, which will enable the churn to be operated alone by wind-power when set in the proper location where the wind will be effective, and they may be readily detached, so as to avoid retarding the operation when the churn is otherwise operated. By this simple means a very efficient simple easily-operated churn is produced, which may be constructed in any required size and adapted to any locality.
The peculiar motion produced by the coaction of the standards 18 18, the crank-shaft 12, and the connecting-rod 22 is very effective in separating the butter from the cream, the rapid vibratory motion, together with the slight vertical motion caused by the segmental movement of the standards 18 18, producing a compound motion upon the cream, which effects a very rapid separation of the butter particles and without disintegrating the fiber of the butter, as the action is wholly produced without the assistance of internal blades or paddles of any kind.
The small rod 31, which is employed only on the handle in moving the perforated plate 30, does not operate in any sense as a paddle or as an obstruction to the cream. The churn therefore operates entirely by the friction within the cream itself and is not effected by any friction between the cream and the churncasing except thesmooth unobstructed interior surfaces of the latter. The action upon the cream is very rapid, causing the separation of the butter particles in a Very short time.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim is 1. A device of the class described comprising a churn-body, rocking supports therefor, a power-shaft having a crank, a pitman connecting said crank with the churn body, means for imparting rotary motion to said power-shaft, and auxiliary means for operating said power-shaft, said means consisting of a hub having radially-extending arms, and vanes adapted for detachable connection with said arms.
2. The combination with a power-shaft, and means for imparting rotary motion to said shaft, of auxiliary means for rotating said shaft, said means comprising a hub having a plurality of radiating arms, and a plurality of vanes having clamping members equipped with set-screws whereby they may be independently and detachably connected with the arms of the hub.
3. In combination, a power-shaft, a hub for said shaft having radiating arms, a balancewheel mounted upon said shaft in proximity to said hub, and aplurality of vanes provided at their inner ends with means whereby they may be detachably and independently connected with the radial arms of the hub.
