Be it known that I, SAMUEL F. KLOHS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook, State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Car-Trucks; and I hereby declare the following to vbe a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side view of the truck, showing one half in elevation and the other half in longitudinal vertical central section, the wheel omitted. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the truck. Fig. 3 is aside elevation of the inner face of the side frame of my improved truck, with the journal-box guides or retaining-stirrups removed. Fig. et isfa plan view of the same. Fig. 5 is a transverse vertical section through the transom connecting said side frames. Fig. 6 is an inverted plan view of one half of the same. Fig. 7 is a detached View, in side elevation, of the stirrup or journal-box guide. Fig. 8 is a longitudinal vertical central section of a car-truck embodying my invention as arranged for using a bolster. Fig. 9 is a plan view of the truck shown in Fig. 8. Fig. 10 is an end View of said truck, having the wheels and j ournal-boxes removed, one half of the same beingin vertical central section and the other half in elevation. simple, cheap, and durable cast-steel car- Y truck the principal parts of which are removably connected in such manner that should one break or otherwise be in need of repair it can be readily separated from the other parts of the truck and a new corresponding part substituted therefor.
To this end the main feature of my invention, generally stated, embraces the combination, in a car-truck, of side frames and a transom having interlocking members so arranged as to create a horizontal thrust, and thus be rigidly held against separation by the load imposed on the truck.
A second feature of my invention embraces the combination, with the side frame of a cartruck, of an interlocking L-shaped journalbox guide or stirrup, whereby in a separable guide construction the thrust ofthe journalbox is taken upon the side frame and not upon the guide-fastenings and the journalbox is laterally supported, as in the pedestal construction.
There are other minor features of invention, all as will hereinafter more fully appear.
I will now proceed to describe my invention more fully, so that others skilled in the art to which it appertains may apply the same.
In the drawings, A represents a channeled transom having a suitable center bearing a, cast integral therewith, and having its ends b preferably closed and at the vertical angles provided with lateral anges c c, the projection of which is greater at the top and gradually becomes less as they approach the lower edges of the transom and have their inner shoulders d beveled or angularly disposed with relation to the axis of the transom.
The side frames B may be of any suitable shape, but I prefer to make them as shownin the drawings or arch-shaped, where lightness is desired. Near their center of length the side frames are provided with vertical columns e e, (see Figs. 1, 3, and 4,) the inner- IOO sides of which have inwardly-projecting lugs ff, the opposing faces of which lugs are undercut, so as to form a dovetail groove, seat, or female member into which the flanges c c of the transom which constitute the key or male member of the interlocking devices engage.
-These lugs are farthest apart at their upper ends and converge toward each other as they approach their lower ends at an angle corresponding to the incline of the edges of said lugs or male member which interlocks therewith. As a result of this or a like construction`a portion of the load is transformed into a horizontal thrust, and it will thus be seen that the greater the load on the transom the more secure or rigid will become the connection between the transom and the side frames of the truck. It will also be observed that the connection or coupling of the parts is thus accomplished without the aid of bolts or devices of a similar character. The ends of the side frames have arms g g, projecting longitudinally from their upper portions, and these arms are provided with suitable shaped seats or pockets h h for the reception of the springs 'i z', that rest on the journal-boxes C C of the journals of the axles D, and also with downward projections or lips g, which overlap the upper end of the journal-box guide or stirrup E.
E indicates the detachable portion of a journal-box guide the upper end of which is provided with a dowel-pin or extensionj, which passes through an opening in the extension g of the side frame, and the lower inner end of the stirrup or guide is furnished with a like upwardly-projecting doWel-pin or extension 7c, which passes through an opening in the lower rail of the said frame, and the guide or stirrup is connected with the side frame b v suitable pins or keys passing through slots in the extremities thereof. It will be noted that the upper outer end of the L-shaped guide takes under the overlapping lip g', while its lower upturned extremity bears against the inner journal-box guide of the side frame, thus affording the separable member adequate support against longitudinal thrustindependent of its connections.
In Figs. 8, 9, and 10 is shown a truck similar in every respect to that shown in the first seven igures of the drawings, except that the channeled transom O has its open side facing upward, and in the trough of this transom is placed a suitable truck-bolster P, the ends of which rest upon the springs R R, contained within the trough of the channeled transom O. The bolster P, forming no material feature of the present invention, may be of any desired character, Figs. 8, 9, and 10 of the drawings being simply introduced to illustrate the applicability of my invention to a swing-motion truck.
In Figs. 11 to 15, inclusive, a construction is illustrated showing the application of my invention where greater strength is required, and in such instances the central portion of the side frames may be swelled or made of increased thickness to allow of greater depth for the converging Ways and interlocking members of the transom, and in such cases the outer face of the side frame maybe closed in contradistinction to the open construction or vertical columns e e of Figs. 1 and 3.
In Figs. 16 to 18, inclusive, a construction is shown wherein the male interlocking member of the transom extends through the side frame, the thickness of said side frame being utilized to perform the function of the female member without the addition of the inwardlyprojecting lugs ff of the preceding figures. In this construction as the groove or female member is closed above by the top rail of the side frame the vertical depth of the key or male member c will be less than the depth of the central opening in the frame, and the transom will be provided with shoulders d', which bear against the inner face of the said side frame. The relative positions of the transom in the female member of the side frame at its introduction and in the locked position are shown by the dotted and full lines of Fig. 16.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. Acar-truckcomprisinginterlockingside frames and transom which mutually coact to transform part of the load into horizontal thrust.
2. In a car-truck, the combination with side frames, of a transom having ends adapted to transform part of the load into horizontal thrust and to interlock with said side frames, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
3. ln a car-truck, the combination with side frames, of a transom, and interlocking inclined means integral therewith for connecting said side frames and transom, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
4. In a car-truck, the combination with side frames having female devices, adapted to receive the male devices of the transom, of a transom having inclined interlocking male devices, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
5. In a car-truck, the combination with side frames having female devices adapted to receive the male devices of the transom, of a transom having interlocking male devices integral with the ends thereof, said male and female interlocking devices having inclined coacting faces, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
6. In a car-truck, the combination with side frames, of a transom, said side frames and transom having male and female intery locking devices provided with inclined faces, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
'7. In a car truck, the combination with side frames, of an interlocking transom having converging faces angularly disposed with ICO ILO
relation to the aXis of said transom and which engage said side frames, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
8. In a car-truck, the combination with a transom having laterally-extended beveled converging faces, of side frames having correspondingly-beveled converging faces engaging therewith, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
9. In a car-truck, the combination with a transom having laterally-extended beveled converging flanges, of side frames provided with vertically-disposed lugs having undercut beveled opposing sides engaged by said beveled flanges, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
10. In a car-truck, the combination with side frames, of detachable L-shaped journalbox guides, the sideframes and journal-box guides having overlapping abutting members whereby the thrust of the journal-box is transmitted through the L-shaped guide directly to the side frame, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
11. In a car-truck, the combination with a side frame having a spring-seat and lip pendent therefrom, of an L-shaped journal-box guide or stirrup whose upper end takes under the pendent lip of the side frame and whose lower end engages the inner journalbox guide, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
12. In a car-truck, the combination with a transom, of side frames having arms projecting from their ends, journal-boxes supporting the side frames, and L-shaped guides or stirrups for retaining said journal-boxes in position, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
13. In a car-truck, the combination with a transom and side frames provided with male and female interlocking devices, of journalboxes supporting said side frames, and L- shaped journal-box guides for retaining said journal-boxes in position, said L-shaped journal-box guides engaging the inner faces of abutting portions of said side frames, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
14. The combination with the side frame of a car-truck having the inner journal-box guide integral therewith and a pendent lip or lug external thereof, of a detachable L-shaped outer journal-box guide whose opposite ends engage the inner face of said lug or lip and the inner face of said innerjournal-box guide, substantiallyas andforthe purposes specified.
15. A car-truck comprising side frames and transom having inclined interlocking members, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
16. In a car-truck, the combination with side frames, of a transom,` said transom having at its ends inclined faces which interlock with correspondingly-inclined faces of the side frames, substantially as and for the purposes specified.y
17. In a car-truck, the combination with the side frames, of L-shaped journal-box guides engaging the inner faces of abutting portions of said side frames, substantially as and for the purposes specied.
