Letters Patent No. 71,861, dated December 10, 1867, .i
GALBNDAR-ATTAGHMENT T0 INKSTANDS.
tige .dgetul referat .tu iu time tter hattet aut mating ,met ut ttt smit.
TO ALL W HOM .IT MAY CONCERN: I g 4 l .Be it known that I, S. R. DUMMER, of ythe city, county, and State'ot` New York, have invented a new and vimproved Calendar-Attachment to Inkstands, Ste.; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact descriptionthereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification. I
The present invention consists, first, in so constructing the body of an inkstand, Svc., as to receive and support one above another, but independently of each other, a series of rings or frames, that they can be turned or moved around thereon, on which ringsare painted, o1 otherwise suitably indicated, any data desired, such as, for' instance, the names of the calendar months, days of the week, and ofthe month from 1st to lstinclusive,'in regular order and succession in each case, in combination with a frame or band secured to the outside of the inkstand, Snc., which frame is provided with openings at suitable points, to expose to viewonly one portion or part of the data. contained in the said rings, and thus enable, by properly setting the rings opposite such openings, the day of the week and month, together with the name of the month to be indicated therein, `for reference or for being read, as from time to time may be desired. i,
The invention also consists in a, novel construction of the inkstand, by which the'ink contained in it can be forced up through a tube for being used.
In the accompanying plate of drawings, 'my improved calendar-attachment for inkstands, ttc., together with the newI construction for inkstands embraced in the present invention, is illustrated- Figure 1 being a side view of an inkstand, with the calendar-attachment.
Figure 2, a central vertical section, taken in the plane ofthe line a: fr, iig. 1; and
Figure 3, a horizontal section, taken in the plane of the liney iig. 1. i
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A, in the drawings, represents the body of an inkstand, around which is formed a series of parallel rests or shoulders, B, one above the other, and at equal distances or widths from each other. C, a series of rings, of a width equal to that between the shoulders B of the inkstand, on which they rest, one to each shoulder, and each of sufficient circumference to loosely embracethe circumference ofthe portions of the inkstarid corresponding thereto. The lower one of these rings, G, is marked from the 1st to 31st inclusive, at equal and regular distances apart, the ring next above with the names of the months in regular order and successon,'from January to December inclusive, andthe upper one of the series with the names of the days of the week, from Sunday to Saturday inclusive, and in regular order and succession. D, a frame or plate, secured to outside of i'nkstand over rings C, which plate extends down the front of the inkstand from top to bottom. In this plate D is a 4series of openings, E, corresponding in number and position to the rings C, these openings being of such size as to only expose through them to view one' only of each part of the data embraced and indicated in each of the rings.
From the above description, it is plainlyobvious that by properly adjusting the rings C, .which move inde pendently of cach other, any day of the week, together with the month and day of the month,` ca'n be readily m indicated and exposed for reference, as may be desired.` In addition to the improvement above described, the inkstand is provided with a central vertical tube, H, of a funnel or cup-shape at its outer end, L, where the ink is removed 'by the pen for use, and also with another tubo, M, that extends nearly to the bottom of the nkstand at one side from its side central tube, which tube is provided with a piston or plunger, O. In this tube, M, if the inkstand be tipped tothe opposite side while 4 i, being filled, an ,air-cushion will be formed when the inkstand is righted in position, so that, by then pushing down Ithe piston, the air-cushion`below, being compressed, forces the ink up through the central tube to its cupshaped end ready for use, when, by lifting up .or partially withdrawing said plunger, the link can be made to ow back into the stand, as is obvious without any further explanation. i y I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. An-inkstand, Ste., constructed with a series of shoulders o'r rests, B, whether one or more, and one above another, in combination with the rings C and plate or frame D, or their respective equivalents, substantially as and for the purpose described. Y 2. In combination with the above, I claim the two tubes H M and plunger O, as herein set forth for the' purpose specified.
The above specification of my invention signed by me,.this 27th day of `February, 1867.
VSAMTA. rDUMMER.
