'I l 'y Application filed April30,1902. Serial No. 105,341. (No model.)
Be it known that l, EDGAR QUICK, a citizen ofltheUnitedStates, residing at Columbus, in
' proveme'nts rinfpuinp's or filling devices for si'ght1ee ,ii'liricators; and its object is to provide'a'simpledevice by mea'ns of which oil canat any Itempera-ture be placed within thelubricatorwithout removing the cap thereof. Heretofore ithas been found necessary to maintain oil ata certain temperature -in order to keep it in a limpid state to permit it to be poured into the filler-hole of the receptacle of the lubricator. Unless the lubricant was suciently thin or the lubricator perfectlysteady the oil would flow over the sides of saidlubricator and become not only wasted, but also soil the machinery. Moreover, by the slow process of pouring the expenditure of a considerable amount of time is required to fill the lubricator.
The objects of my invention are to overcome the above difficulties and to provide a pump attachment of novel construction adapted to quickly transfer the contents of an oil-can to the lubricator, to so construct the pump as to force oil of any temperature or thickness into the lubricator, and to provide meansfor filtering the lubricant prior to its discharge into the receptacle of thelubricater.
lVith the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and illus.- trated in the accompanying drawings, showing the preferred form of my'invention, and in Which- Figure 1 is a central longitudinal section through a filling-pump attached to a lubricator. Fig. 2 is a similar view of a modified form of pump. Fig. 3 is an elevation of a lubricator, showing the various positions in which the pumps may be arranged in relation thereto.
Referring to the figures by numerals of reference, 1 is a lubricator having an externally-threaded nipple 2 extending therefrom and engaging a cylindrical valve-casing 3, having a contracted passage e therein, at one end of which is a tapered valve-seat 5, while lat the end nearest the nipple 2 is a seat 6 for a ball-valve 7. This ball is retained in position within the casing by means of a screenstrainer 8, secured within said casing between the nipple 2' and a shoulder 9, formed in the casing.
The outer end of the casing 3 is threaded and engages a cylinder y10 of suitable size, having a head ll detachably iitted in its free end. This head is provided with a centrallylocated threaded aperture 12, within which is slidably mounted a rod 13, having a ring 14 or other means at its outer end whereby it can be readily grasped. The inner end of the rod 13 is provided with a cut-off'valve 15, adapted when pressed inward to bear upon the seat and it can he locked or held in such position when the pump is not in use by turning threads 16, formed on the rod 18, into engagement with the threaded aperture 12. A suitable piston 17 is secured to rod 13 in rear of the valve 15.
A hollow arm 1S extends from the casing 3 at a point adjacent tovalve-seat and is provided with a shoulder 19 at its inner end, against which is fitted a screen-strainer 20. The outer end of the arm 1S receives the end of a suction-pipe 21, having a seat 22 at its inner end for a ball-valve 23.
When it is desired to fill the lubricat'or l, the suction-pipe 2l iis placed in a can 2l, containing oil. The rod 13 is then turned until its threads 16 are disengaged from the head 11, andthe piston 17 is drawn outward. This action will close valve 7 and open valve 23, and the oil will be drawn up through pipe 2l and into cylinder 10. lVhen the motion ot' the piston is reversed, the valve 23 is closed and valve 7 opened, and the oil in the cylinder is forced through the nipple 2 and into the lubricator.
It willbe understood that the strainers 2O and 8 prevent the admission to the lubricator of any impurities which may be contained within the oil.
By assembling the parts in the mannerherein shown and described they can be readily the lubricator, but can also be arranged at an 'incline at the upper end, as shown in Fig`.3,
in which I have illustrated the various positions of the pump in relation to the. lubricator.
In the foregoing description vI have shown the preferred form of myinvention; bntI do not limit myself thereto, as I am aware that modifications may bey made therein Without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention, and I therefore reserve the right to make all such changes and alterations as may vfairly fall within the scope of my invention.
Having thus fully described the invention, what is claimed as new is- 1. The combination with a lubricator, of a valve-casing secured thereto, and provided Lith valve-seats, a Valve located in one of the seats, a cylinder having,r connection with the valve-casing, a rod mounted within the cylinder, a piston secured to the rod, and a cut-off valve carried hy the rod, and adapted to occupy the other valve-seat.
' The combination with a lubricator, of a valve-casing secured thereto, and provided with valve-seats, a valve located in one of the seats, a suction-pipe connected with the casing, a cylinderhaving connection with the valve-casing, a rod mounted within the cylinder, a piston secu red to the rod, a cut-olf valve' carried by the rod, and adapted to occupy the other valve-seat, and means for retaining the cut-off valve seated.
The combination with a lubricator having a nipple extending therefrom, of a valvecasingsecured thereto, a valve and a strainer in said casing, a cylinder secured'to the casing, a piston therein, ya threaded head to the cylinder, a threaded rod to the piston and extending through the head, a cut-off valve upon the rod adapted' to be held upon a seat in the casing when the threads of the rod engage the cylinder-head, a suction-pipe opening into the casing and cylinder, and a valve and a strainer in said pipe.
In testimony whereof I afx my signature vin presence of two Witnesses.
