SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 717,991, dated January 6, 1903. Application filed Octdber S0, 1902. Serial No. 129,444:- (No model.)

'Beit known that I, JOSEPH P. HASTY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Superior, in the county of Nuckolls and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Railway-Switches; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvementin railway-switches, particularly with reference to the means for operating the switch-rails and for indicating the position thereof; and it consists in the peculiarconstruction and combination of devices hereinafter fully described and claimed. l
The object of my invention is toetect improvements whereby a single stand may be employed for operating two pairs of switchrails on a railway-crossing independently of each other at will.
In the accompanyingr drawings, Figure 1 is a top plan view of the railway switch or crossing embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse sectional view of the same, taken on the plane indicated by the line a a of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on the plane indicated by the line b b of Fig. 1, and Fig. 4 is an inverted detail plan view showing the revoluble cam and the connections coacting therewith to independently operate the two pairs of switch-rails.
In the embodiment of my invention here shown the bent rails of the crossing are indicated, respectively, by the reference-numerals 1 2, the said rails being bent in opposite directions, as shown in Fig. l. said bent rails is a portion of each of the crossed tracks. One end of the rail is parallel with the rail 1a of one of the tracks and.
the opposite end thereof is parallel with the rail .lb of the other track. A similar switch-rail 3b is at the inner end of the rail 2b and is also adapted to be moved toward and from the inner side of the bent rail l. Similar switch-rails 4 4b coact with the inner ends of the rails 1a 1b, respectively, and are adapted to be moved toward and from the inner side of the bent rail2. I will now describe my improved means for operating the pairs of switch-rails. On one side of the track-crossing is a stand S. In the latter is a vertically-disposed revoluble ,shaft 9, provided with an arm 10, having a locking member 1l, and the switch-stand is provided at its upper end with 1ockingnotches l2, adapted to be respectively engaged by the looking member of the revoluble arm 10 to secure the shaft 9 in any desired position. The said shaft is preferably provided with a signal-board 13, appropriately colored, to indicate the position of the sha'ft, and hence of the switch-rails. At the lower end of the shaft 9 is a revoluble disk 14, which is fast to the said shaft and is turned thereby. The said disk is a cam-disk and in the construction here shown is provided on its under side with a cam-groove 15, which comprises a segmental section 16, an
.oppositelydisposed similar section17, which is of greater radius and is concentric with said section 16, and connecting volute cam sections 18, the various sectionsof the camgroove forming a continuous wayzin-which operate the tappets 19 19a, which are respectively connected by rods 20 to the rods- 5 7, y
which operate the respective pairs of switchrails. Each of the tappets is provided with anoscillating detent 21, here shown as a rod IOO pivoted at its outer end to the stand. These and the minor details of construction may be detents maintain the tappets in position for constant engagement with the cam-groove and permit movement of the tappets and of their rods 2O when the cam is turned, as Will be understood. On The upper end of the shaft 9 is a spur gear or pinion 22. The latter engages a pair of oppositelydisposed rack-bars 23, each of which is connected to a sliding frame 24, provided with sections of appropriatelycolored glass. The said frames operate in a boX or housing 25, which is supported above the stand by a suitable standard The said box or housing is provided at its sides with glazed. openings 26, with which the colored sections of glass register when the frames 24 are moved by the turning of the pinion 22 and the rack-bars 23, which coact therewith. It will be understood that the colored glass carried by the sliding frames are signals which indicate the position of the switch-rails to the engineer of an approaching train. At night a light is placed in the housing midway between the sliding frames to illuminate 'the colored-glass signals and cause them to display appropriately-colored lights. The signals operated by the shaft of the stand may be of any suitable construction within the scope of my invention, and I do not limit myself in this particular.
Frein the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction, operation, and advantages of my invention will be readily apparent, it is thought, Without requiring a more extended explanation.

resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to protect by Letters Patent, is-
l. A revoluble cam element having a camgroove comprising oppositely-disposed segmental concentric sections and volute connecting-sections, in combination with movable switch elements, operating-rods for independently moving them and having tappets engaging said cam-grooves, and pivoted detents connected to the said tappets, substantially as described.
2. In rcombination with a movable switch element, a revoluble cam, a tappet actuated thereby and having a pivoted detent, and a connection between the tappet and the movable member, substantially as described.
3. A switch-stand having a revoluble shaft and means to turn the same, in combination with a sliding signal element, and operating connections between thelatter and said shaft, substantially as described.
4. A switch-stand having a revoluble shaft and means to turn the same, in combination with a sliding signal element having a rack, and a pinion on said shaft engaging said rack, substantially as described.
