HERBERT E. PENNEY, OF` MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA, ASSIGNOR TO W. S. NO TT COMPANY, OF MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA, A CORPORATION.
STEAM-GENERATOR.
SPECIFICATIQN forming- `part. of Letters Patent No. 717,914, dated January 6, 190 34 Application tiled April 26, 1902.
lo @ZZ whom t nfl/wy concern,.-
Be it known that I, HERBERT E. PENNEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Minneapolis, county of Hennepin, and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Steam Generators, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to vertical steamboilers in which both water-tubes and. par- 1o tially-snbmerged lines are employed; and its object is to improve the Water circulation and increase the efficiency of the boiler as a rapid steam-generator.
My improvements areillustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of the boiler, and Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view on the line e' .e ot' Fig. 1.
In the drawings, l designates the outer cylzo inder or shell of the boiler, andi.) a concentric inner cylinder or shell, preferably of approximately half the height of the outer shell, an annular space 3 being provided between the two shells to serve as a water-leg. z5 The two shells are connected by stay-bolts 4 or equivalent devices for holding them in position against pressure in the intervening space, and the annular space 3 is closed at the bottom by a suitable ring 5. The inner 3o shell is covered by a crown-sheet o.
grate 7is suitably supported near the bottom of the inner shell, and a tire-door 8 is provided near the base of the shells to give access to the combustion-chamber. In the latter chamber are water-tubes arranged in series in parallel vertical planes, the tubes of each series or section inclining in opposite direction from those of the adjoining sections. These tube-sections are each composed of ver- 4o tical headers 9, arranged at opposite sides of the chamber, and inclined tubes 10 in staggering order connecting the headers.
The tube-sections are connected to the Water-leg 3 by means of pipe couplings 11, screwed into the lower ends of the headers, and hollow plugs 12, adapted to .screw into sockets in the elbows 13 of the couplings and into holes in the inner .shell 2. Only one header of each tube-section is shown as thus 5o connected to the Water-leg; but both may be y similarly connected, if desired. The upper A iire- Serial No. 104,754. (No model.)
ends of the headers are connected to the crown-sheet 6 by hollow plugs 14, that strew into holes in the sheet, and communication is thereby established between the tube-sections in the combustion-chamber and the space or chamber above the sheet..
Above the crown-sheet 6 are re tubes or tlues 15, arranged in vertical series and havingA their lower ends connected to the crownsheet and their upper ends connected to a circular plate or head 16, whereby communication is established between the combustion-chamber and the interior of the smokeiiue 17. VThe lower end of the smoke-line is connected by a tight joint to the plate 16 and the upper end to the head 18 of the shell 1. The space intervening the cylinder 1 and its head and the iiue 17 constitutes the steam space or dome. A steam-outlet 19 is placed in communication with this space.
'In operation, the water-level being maintained at a point between the crown-sheet and the plate 16, water enters the headers 9 and tubes 10 from the water-leg and as it becomes heated flows, together with whatever steam may have been generated, upward into the water-space above the crownsheet, where it is subjected to the heat of the crown-sheet and nre-tubes, and the steam generated rises into the steam-dome.
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. In a steam-generator, in combination; outer and inner concentric shells providing a water-jacketed fire-box, the inner shell being the shorter and provided with a crown-sheet; a head and a depending funnel-shaped smokeliue with a closed base covering the outer shell and providing an intermediate steamspace; a series of removable tube-sections arranged in parallel vertical planes, each tube-section comprising a pair ot' opposite vertical headers and inclined tubes connecting them, the inclinations of the tubes being opposite in adjoining sections; detachable pipe-couplings connecting the lower ends of the headers with 'the water-leg and detachable plugs connecting their upper ends with the crown-sheet; and a series of vertical fines lconnecting the crown-sheet and smoke-due ICO leg and detachable plugs connecting their upi5 per ends with the crown-sheet; and a series of vertical ues connecting the crown-sheet and smoke-Hue base for the passage of the products of combustion from the fire-box to the smoke-flue, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses, this 17th day of April, 1902.
HERBERT E. PENNEY.
