BASE FOR SHOW-CASES.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 717,910, dated January 6, 1903.

To all whom, it may concern:

Be it known that I, LEONARD PAULLE, of Minneapolis, Hennepin county, Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bases for Show-Cases, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to show-case base construction; and the object of the invention is to provide an improvement over the construction of base shown in Letters Patent of the United States granted to me February 6, 1900, No. 642,875.

A further object is to provide means for preventing breakage of the walls of the case should the supports at the base shrink away from the lower edges of the glass.

The invention consists generally in providing the base of the show-case at its ends with recesses or rabbets to receive the lower edges of the end walls and wherein said edges are pinned and afterward concealed by the ornamental base-slabs.

Further, theinvention consists in providing vertical grooves in the base at the side of the case, wherein blocks are lengthwise adjustable and are adapted to be moved into contact with the lower edges of the side walls.

Further, the invention consists in various constructions and combinations, all as hereinafter described, and particularlypointed' out in the claims. i

In the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification, the figure is a perspective of a show-case having a base embodying my invention.

In the drawing, 2 represents a show-case base constructed of wood in the usual manner, having at the ends transverse recesses or rabbets 3 to receive the lower ends of the end walls 4, which are provided with perforations to receive Wooden dowel-pins 5, which secure the plates 4 firmly to the base. The rabbets or recesses in the ends of the base may be of any desired width, preferably from two to three inches, according to the size of the case and the height of the base. The sides of the base are also provided with rabbets 6 to receive the side plates or panels 7, which, with the end panels, support the top plate 8. As shown in the figure, I prefer to provide rabbets in the ends of the base of greater width than thosein the sides, so that bind the walls together.

The side plates when placed in their rabbets are flush with the base, and at intervals in the base I provide vertical slots 9, wherein blocks 10 are arranged and adjustable vertically by means of screws 11. In constructing the case these blocks are adjusted so that their upper ends will be in contact with the lower edges of the side walls, and in case of shrinkage of the base or of any unevenness of the lower edges of the plates will support them and prevent any undue strain on the "clamps 12, which The use of these supporting-blocks renders it unnecessary to straighten the lower edge of the side plates, as the blocks can be adjusted to sustain, if desired, the weight of the walls, and a uniform bearing-surface between the lower edges of the plates and the base is not necessary. After the end and side plates have been placed in position their lower edges and the base are concealed by the slabs 12, of marble, wood, or any other suitable material.

In show-cases as now constructed, where all the framework or molding at the front of the case is omitted and the walls are secured together by clamps, it is desirable to provide means for supporting and sustaining the side and end walls at the base to prevent racking or twisting. This desired end 1 have attained by securing the end plates in the manner described, so that they will brace those at the sides and impart a firmness and rigidity to the case.

I claim as my invention 1. The combination, with a show-case base having transverse and longitudinal recesses or rabbetsin the upper outside edges of its ends and sides, of panels having their lower edges fitting within said rabbets, the outer surfaces of said panels being flush substantially with the corresponding surfaces of said ends and sides, said sides being provided with vertical slots below the rabbets therein, blocks secured in said slots having their grain running lengthwise thereof and their ends arranged to engage the lower edges of the side panels, dowel-pins passing through said end panels into said base, and base-boards secured to said ends and sides and concealing said slots and pins andclamping the edges of said panels within said rabbets, substantially as described.

2. The combination, with a show-case base having longitudinal recesses to receive the walls of the case and vertical slots communicating with said recesses, of plates having lower edges adapted to rest within said recesses, blocks adjnstably arranged in said slots and adapted to engage the lower edges of said plates, and slabs or base-boards concealing the lower edges of said plates and said blocks.

3. The combination, with a show-case base having a series of vertical slots, of a glass plate resting upon said base, blocks secured within said slots and adapted to engage and support the lower edge of said plate, the grain of said blocks running at right angles substantially to the edge with which they are in contact.

4. The combination, with a show-case base, having transverse and longitudinal recesses or rabbets in the upper outside edges of its ends and sides, of panels having their lower edges fitting within said rabbets and their outer surfaces flush substantially with the corresponding surfaces of said ends and sides, the rabbets in said ends being wider than those in the sides of said base to provide greater bearing-surfaces for the end panels, dowel-pins passing through said end panels into said base, and base-boards secured to the ends and sides of said base and concealing said dowel-pins and the lower edges of said panels and bracing the latter against lateral movement, substantially as described.
