SCRAPER ATTACHMENT FOR PLOW-COLTERS.
SPECIFICATIDN forming part of Letters Patent No. 717,698, dated January 6, 1903. Applicatioii filed July 31, 1902 Serial No. 117,903, (No model.)
To 11% whom it may concern: 1
Be it known that I, ROBERT ELDER MILLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Grandin, in the county of Cass and State of North Dakota, have invented certain newand useful Improvements in Scraper Attachments for.
PloW-Colters, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to plow-colters, and more especially to the combination, with a rolling colter, of my novel scraper-attachment.
The object of my invention is to provide a novel and practical scraper attachment to rolling colters for the purpose of scraping the sides of the colter clear of soil, whereby the colter of a plow is made to work more perfectly than when it is not provided with my novel scraper attachment. 7
My invention consists of two scrapers supported on arms pivoted at the sides of the circular colter, whereby the scrapers are applied to each side of the colter and-in a position to shave sticking dirt downward and 0% from the revolving colter, and thereby clear the colter-blade free from sticking dirt.
In the drawings forming part of this specification similar letters of reference denote similar parts in both illustrations.
Figure 1 presents a top plan view looking downward upon the colter and scraper at-- tachment. Fig. 2 presents a side elevation view of the colter and of my scraper attachment.
In carrying out the invention scrapers F are attached to the rear ends of the arms E, which arms E are pivoted at E and may be secured upon the pivot by the keys shown at I or in any other suitable manner, and between the forward ends of the arms E,'I placea coiled spring G, which coiled spring is held in position by pins H and H, placed on the rear ends of the said pivoted arms, and the said coiled spring is adapted to spring outwardly and spread the said rear ends of the arms E, which arms E are pivoted at E upon the supports 0, which supports 0 are connected over the lower ends of the swinging arms B, which swinging arms B are pivoted at D to a support upon the plow, and the rolling colt'er A revolvesin the usual manner on the centers J.
In constructing my colter attachment I find it is best to have the scrapers pivoted at F; but my colter-scraping attachment will work if constructed with a stiffjoint at F.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim is 1. With a plow-colter centered on swinging arms, the combination of scrapers positioned to contact with the rear sides of the rolling colter, said scrapers pivoted upon the rear ends of arms pivoted on supports placed over the center pivot of the rolling colter, said pivoted arms arranged to be spread apart at their forward ends by the force of a spring.
3. With a plow-colter centered on swinging arms, the combination of scrapers positioned to contact with the rear sides ot the rolling colter and carried upon the rear ends of arms pivoted upon supports placed over the center pivot of the rolling colter and arranged to be spread apart at their forward ends by the force of a coiled spring placed between their forward ends.
4. Combined with a plow-colter centered on swinging arms, scrapers positioned to contact with the rear sides of the rolling colter, said scrapers supported upon swinging arms, and arranged to spring against the sides of the rolling colter.
5. Combined with a plow-colter centered onswinging arms, scrapers positioned to contact 'With the rear sides of the rolling colter, said scrapers connected to the swinging arms.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ROBERT ELDER MILLER.
