WALTER COOPER, OF SEATTLE, WASHINGTON.
AIR-PUMP PISTON-ROD OlLER.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 717,547, dated January 6,
Application filed June 18, 1902. Serial No. 112;] 24. (1% model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WALTER COOPER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Seattle, in the county of King and State of \Vashington, have invented certain newand useful Improvements in Air-Pump Piston-Rod ilers,-
of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to air-pump pistonrod oilers, and specifically to improvements in the oiler shown and described in my Patent No. 630,488, issued August 8, 1899; and the object of the invention is to lessen the cost of manufacture and generally to render the device more convenient and efficient in operation.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is an under side plan View of the device with the wick wrapping removed. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the oiler complete ready for use, and Fig.
4 is an end elevation of the same looking in the direction of the arrow.
Theirnproved oiler comprises a circular co ntractile clasp b and curved outer cheek-pieces c, of flat spring metal of uniform widths, which are secured together by rivets d and form a pair of chambered jaws y y. Studs or distance-pieces e project inwardly from the said checks to keep the parts of said jaws separated and provide fulcrums about which the jaws are opened. Adjacent to the said studs I form shoulders f upon the under side of the cheek-pieces, which pieces are extended outwardly to provide handles g. An absorbent wrapping it, such as wicking, is wound about the jaws and across the shoulders f, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4, thereby forming a crescentshaped oil-chamber, having wicking for top and bottom walls and covering the space below the handles and between the shoulders.
The device is charged by pouring oil into aperture is between the handles while the jaws are held downward. The handles are then grasped by the other hand and drawn together, which spreads the jaws to permit their passing around the piston-rod. The handles being released, the tension of the spring-clasp asserting itself causes the jaws to press the wrapping thereof elastically against the rod and wipe the oil thereon as the rod reciprocates.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
.1. In an oiler of the character described, two hollow jaws formed from a single con tractile clasp of spring metal and two cheekpieces which are each secured at one end to the said clasp, a shoulder on each of said cheeks, a handle integral with each of said cheeks and projecting outwardly therefrom, distance-pieces on said cheeks positioned adj acent to said shoulders, and absorbent wrapping wound about the jaws and across the throat so as to leave an oil-charging aperture between said handles, substantially as described.-
2. In an oiler of the character described, the metal framework, comprising a contractile clasp b, cheek-pieces a secured to the clasp by rivets d, a handle 9 integral with each of said cheek-pieces, and distance-pieces e between the cheelc-pieces and the clasp, substantially as and for the purposes described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WALTER COOPER.
