SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 717,272, dated December 30, 1902.

Sprinkler-Head, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to fire-extinguishers organized to release a valve having thermal action at a predetermined temperature.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved sprinkler-head which is simple and durable in construction, very effective in operation, and arranged to insure a free fiow of the water whenever the fusible brace is melted, and even in case the valve should stick at one point owing to undue corrosion, sediment, or from other causes.
The invention consists of novel features and parts and combinations of the same, as will be more fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claims.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of referenceindicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure l is a side elevation of the improvement. Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the same on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a plan View of the body, and Fig. 4 is an edge view of one end of the yoke.
The body A of the sprinkler-head is preferably made of glass, porcelain, or similar noncorrodible material and is formed with concentric bores A and A to'produce a shoulder for the annular flange B of a pipe B, con:
nected in the usual manner with the watersupply. The discharge end of the pipe B is normally closed by a valve made of two parts 0 and D, of which the part 0 is in the shape of a tube made of glass, porcelain, or like materialand is seated on thedischarge end of the pipe B, so as to form an extension thereof, as plainly indicated in Fig. 2. part D is in the shape of a metal cap for closing the outer end of the tubular part 0,.suitable gaskets E and E, of copper or other material, being'interposed between the part 0 The other and the pipe B and the part U and the cap D, respectively.
In order to hold the part 0 on the pipe B and the cap part Don the extension part 0, a fusible brace F, having its top end formed of fusible material, is provided, engaging the cap part D at the middle thereof, as plainly shown in the drawings,'the upper end of the said brace being pressed on by a screw G screwing in a yoke H, held on the body A, the said screw G carrying the usual revoluble spray-disk I, as indicated in Figs. 1 and 2.
The lower end of the brace F is formed with a transversely-extending arm F, having a lip F engaging the under side of the cap part D, and the terminal F of the said arm F is adapted to rest on top of the body A. A spring J is sprung in t etween the arms of the yoke H and the front of the brace F, near the upper end of the same, so as to exert alateral pressure on the brace F, and consequently when the latter is melted on being subjected to heat, then the springJ impartsatransverse movement to the brace F, for thelatter to swing with the terminal F as the fulcrum, to cause the lip F to pry the cap part D off the tubular extension 0 of the valve. It is understoodthat when the brace F is melted at the upper end it disengages the retaining-screw G and releases the valve, so that the tubular extension part 0 moves off the pipe B and the cap part D is pried off the part 0. Thus the valve is opened at two points to insure a free flow of the water, and in case one of the parts of the valve should stick the other part will provide an outflow for the water to insure at all times a free flow of the water as soon as the brace F is melted, as previously explained. By having the several parts constructed in the manner described and formed of the materials referred to it will be seen that the metal pipe 13 is seated on a glass or porcelain body A, and in a similar manner the glass or porcelain part 0 is seated on the pipe B, and the cap D of metal is in turn seated on the glass or porcelain part 0. Thus the contacting parts of the entire device 'are of different materials to prevent undue corrosion and leakage and to insure a quick separation of the parts whenever the brace F is melted. The
lower ends of the brace F and arm F, including the lip F are preferably coated with enamel or other non-corrodible substance.
While the part 0 of the valve is shown as a single structure, if found desirable the part 0 may be constructed in several parts imposed one upon another.
Having thus described our invention, We claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A sprinkler-head provided with a valve made of two normally separable parts, of which one forms an extension of the watersupply pipe, and the other forms a cap for the said extension part, as set forth.
2. A sprinkler-head having a supply-pipe terminating in sections, separable from said pipe and from each other, one of said sections forming a closure for the pipe, and a heat-actuated member operating upon said parts to normally hold them in engagement with the pipe and with each other, as specified and shown.
3. A sprinkler-head provided with a valve made in separable parts of different materials, one of the parts being a cap and the other part an extension of the water-supply pipe and seated thereon, and a heat-actuated device which normally holds the extension part on its seat on the supply-pipe, and the said cap part on the extension part, as set forth.
4. Asprinkler-head havinga tube forming an extension of the supply-pipe and seated on the end thereof, a cap on the tube for closing the same, and a heat-actuated device for normally holding the cap to the tube, and the latter to the supply-pipe, as set forth.
5. A sprinkler-head having a tube forming an extension of the supply-pipe and seated on the end thereof, a cap on the tube for closing the same, and a heat-actuated device for normally holding the cap to the tube, and the latter to the supply-pipe, the said heat-actuated device having means for prying the cap off the tube, as set forth.
6. A sprinkler-head comprising a body for supporting the discharge end of the supplypipe, a valve for closing the said supply-pipe, consisting of two separable parts, of which one forms a removable tubular extension of the supply-pipe and the other part is in the form of a cap for closing the extension part, and a heat-actuated device for holding the valve normally in position on the supply-pipe and for releasing the valve when subjected to fusing heat, the said device having means for moving the closed part off the tubular extension, as set forth.
7. A sprinkler-head comprising a body, a supply-pipe seated on the said body, a valve for closing the said supply-pipe, consisting of two parts, of which one forms a removable tubular extension on the supply-pipe and the other part is in the form of a cap for closing the tubular extension, a fusible brace for engaging the said cap part, to hold the latter on the tubular extension and the tubular extension on the supply-pipe, a screw for holding the brace in position, and a spring for pressing the brace laterally, as set forth.
8. A sprinkler-head comprising a body, a supply-pipe seated on the said body, a valve for closing the said supply-pipe, consisting of two parts, of which one forms a removable tubular extension on the supply-pipe and the other part is in the form of a cap for closing the tubular extension, a fusible brace for engaging the said cap part, to hold the latter on the tubular extension and the tubular extension on the supply-pipe, a screw for holding the brace in position, a spring for pressing the brace laterally, and an arm on the brace, resting on the said body, and provided with a lip for engaging the under side of the said cap part, as set forth.
9. A sprinkler-head provided with a valve, consisting of a tube and a cap for the same, and a spring-pressed fusible brace for holding the cap on the tubular part, the brace having an arm, and a lip on the said arm, engaging the under side of the cap, as set forth.
10. Asprinkler-head having a fusible member, and a valve normally closing the supplypipe, said valve being made in two parts, rendered separable from each other and from the supply-pipe by the melting of the fusible member.
11. In a sprinkler-head having a fusible part, and valve for the supply pipe, said valve com posed of a plurality of sections held normally assembled in position upon the end of the supply pipe by pressure delivered through the fusible part; all of said sections forming the valve being separable from each other and from their position at the end of the supply-pipe by the melting of the fusible part.
12. A sprinkler-head provided with a valve made in separable parts of different materials, the two parts uniting to form a cap separable from the supply-pipe and seated thereon, and a heat-actuated device to normally hold the cap in position on the supply-pipe and to pry it therefrom when heat is applied to the valve, as specified and for the purpose set forth.
