CLEMENT F. STREET, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
SPECIFICATION farming part of Letters Patent No. 716,782, dated December23, 1905?.y
Application filed September 2, 1902. Serial No. 121,844. (No model.)
Tc all whom, it may concern,.-
Be it known that I, CLEMENT F. STREET, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Cleveland, Ohio, bave-invented certain Improvements in Twin-Spring Draft-Rigging for Railway-Cars, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a light, strong, and compact twin-spring draftrigging especially adapted for use in connection with cars having metallic sills, although available for use, if desired, in connection with cars having wooden sills.
ln the accompanying drawings, Figure lis a sectional plan view of a twin-spring draftrigging for railway-cars constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical section on the line a ce, Fig. l; and Fig. 3 is a transverse section on the line b b, Fig. l.
l l represent the opposite center sills of the car, which in the present instance are composed of metallic channel-beams, and 2 2 represent the opposite sill-plates suitably secured to the sills and having fore and aft bearingiianges 3 and 4 and top and bottom iianges 5 and 6.
The forward follower of the draft-rigging is represented at 7 and the rear follower at S, each of these followers consisting of a hollow block suitably ribbed in order to give it the desired strength, the two blocks being embraced by a yoke 9, which is secured to the coupling-head l0 by vertical bolts or rivets ll, said coupling-head bearing against the forward follower 7 and the rear end of the yoke having bearing upon the rear follower 8, as shown in Fig. 2. The'followers are supported upon the bottom flanges 6 of the sillplates, and in order to prevent any lateral displacement of the followers and of the springs interposed between said followers and carried thereby each of the sill-plates has secured to it a pair of wrought-iron or steel clips 12, which are adapted to recesses in the lower flanges 6 of the sill-plates and project upwardly beyond said lower flanges, so as to engage the sideribs of the followers, as shown in Fig. 3.
The spring structures are interposed between the front and rear followers in the usual manner, and the character of these spring structures may vary without departing from the essential features of my invention, each ofthe spring structures shown in the present instance consisting of an outer heavy coil and an inner lighter coil. Each of the sill-plates 2 is cut away,.as at 13, for the reception of the projecting ends of the hollow followers 7 and 8, whereby the latter can be of a width necessary to accommodate the two sets of springs, while the sills of the car can be as close together as desired.
When the coupling is subjected to a buing strain, the forward follower is pushed rearwardly, compressing the springs against the Yrear follower, which has rigid bearing against the rear flanges l of the sill-plates, draft-strains causing the yoke 9 to draw forward the rear follower 8 and compress the springs against the forward follower 7, which has rigid bearing against the forward flanges 3 of the sill-plates, each of the followers being guided in its movement by the clips l2, so that any twisting or distortion of the followers or springs is eifectually prevented.V
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination in twin-spring draftrigging for railway-cars, of sill-plates,` a coupling-head and its yoke, front and rear followr ers, springs interposed between the same, and
clips carried by the sill-plates and engaging f with the front and rear followers so as to prevent lateral displacement of the same, substantially as specified. Y
2. The combination in twin-spring draft-V rigging for railway-cars, of sill-plates, a coupling-head and yoke, front and rear followers supported by bottom flanges of the sill-plates, springs interposed between said followers, and clips carried by the sill-plates and contained in recesses of the lower flanges of the same, said clips engaging the followers so as to prevent lateral displacement of the same, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
CLEMENT F. STREET.
