Description

UNITED STATES PATENT Optics.
`IOHN L. MCHENRY AND SAMUFL WILSON, OF ROOKFORD, IOWA.
STOCK-SALTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 716,743, dated'December 23, 1902.
Application filed Inno 16, 1902. Serial No. 111.957- (N'o model.)
To' LLZZ whom, t may corwert:`
Be it known that we, JOHN L. MOHENRY and SAMUEL WILSON, citizens of the United States, residing at Rockford, in the county of Floyd and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stock- Salters; and We do'hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to Which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to an improvement in stock-salters, and has for its object the provision of a receptacle adapted to contain a quantity of salt and associated with which are means for facilitating ready access of stock to the salt.
Novel details in the construction and operation of the several parts will be apparent from the detailed description hereinafter and the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings, wherein an embodiment of the invention is shown for the purpose of illustration, like reference characters refer to corresponding parts in the several views, of Which-- Figure l is a perspective view of the device. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view'thereof, and Fig. 3 is a view of a double form of the device.
Referring more specifically to the drawings, A designates a receptacle of any desirable con figuration, that shown being preferably rectangular, with an open top closed by a cover B, hinged at b to one edge of the body portion of the receptacle. At the forward end of the receptacle, adjacent the hinged end of the cover, is a trough C, projecting outwardly from the lower portion of the receptacle and leading to an opening therein, which is normally closed by a dat door D, hinged to a horizontally-disposed rod d, passing through opposite sides of the receptacle and secured in place by nuts d'.
At the rear end of the cover B is a bracket b, to which is pivotally secured a lever E, extending in opposite directions from said bracket and connected at its forward end to a spring F and at its rear end to a depending rod G. The spring YF is secured in place to the cover B through the medium of an eye f. The rod G extends downwardly into proximity with the upper edge of the flat doorD,
where it is connected to said door at a point somewhat below the pivotal point thereof by means of an eye g. To permit of a straight rod Gr' being employed in the arrangement specified, the side wall o of the receptacle A is inclined inwardly in a downward direction to a point immediately above the upper edge of the door D and is connected at its lower end to a horizontally-disposed portion ct', slotted at d2 to permit the rod G to slide freely therethrough.
tion by reason of the elevatingof the rod G by the lever E and contracting spring F, secured thereto. However, the receptacle being filled with salt, stock may readily have access thereto by simply poking at the door D and shoving the same open slightly, permitting salt to feedY through the opening in the receptacle into the trough C. In this manner a supply of salt will 'be constantly on hand; but the same is prevented from being fed too freely or from spilling. By pivoting the lcverE at the rear end of the cover B the cover may be readily elevated at any time to ill the receptacle. A v
In Fig. 3 a double form of our device is shown, but it is unnecessary in view of the foregoing to describe the same in detail, and it will suffice to say that the only difference between the two constructions is that the end members H of the cover portion of the re` ceptacle to which the levers E and spring F are connected are stationary and the hinged portion of the cover I is hinged to one of the members H, as at t'.
Slight changes in the details and arrange ment of the several parts may be made Without'in the least departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is-
l. A stock-Salter of the character described comprising a receptacle having an open top and an outletopening, a cover for Asaid top, and means for normally closing said outletopening comprisingr a dat door, and meansfor closing the same including a spring-controlled lever pivotally mounted upon the cover, and
It will Vthus be seen that the dat door D is normally held in closed posi.
ICO
asuitable connection between said lever and the door; substantially as described.
between said lever and the door, and a ten-- sion device associated with the lever for normally retracting the same, substantially as described.
4. A stock-Salter ofthe character described comprising a receptacle having an outletopening, and means for normally closing said opening comprising a door, an operating-rod connected thereto, a lever pivotally mounted upon said receptacle and connected at one end to said operating-rod, and a spring associated with the opposite end of said lever; substantially as and for the purpose described.
5. A stock-Salter of the character described having an outlet-opening, and means for nor` mally closing said outlet-opening comprising ac'door adapted to open inwardly,an upwardlyextending rod connected to said door for operating the same, and a spring-controlled lever mounted upon the receptacle and connected to the upper end of said rod, the side of said receptacle adjacent to said rod being inclined inwardly and downwardly to facilitate lthe up-and-down movementof said rod; substantially as described.
In testimony whereof we afx our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN L. MCHENRY. SAMUEL WILSON.
