PELEG W-ERNI AND REUBEN B. DE BARE, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNORS TO REUBEN B. DE BARE,- OF THE SAME PLACE.
Letters .Patent No.` 71,669, dated December S, 1867.
IMPROVEMENT IN 'SAWING-MAGHINBS.
TO ALL WI-IOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that we, PELEG WERNI und REUBl-iu B. Dn BARE, of Chicago, in the county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvementin Machines for Sewing Wood; and wo do hereby declare and make known that the following is a full, clear, and exact descriptionof the same, reference beingv had to the accompanying drawings, and the figures and letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.
To enable those skilled in the art to understand how to construct and use our invention, we will proceed to describe the same with particularity, making reference in so doing to the aforesaid drawings, in 'which- Figure l represents aplan or top view of our invention, and l 'Figure 2 a side elevation ofthe same.
Similar letters of reference in the several figures denote the same part-s of our invention.
A represents a suitable frame, supported upon any suitable supports, B B, and provided with an upright fiate-C5--upon and within which the saw is operated, as hereinafter described. D represents a support, upon which the stick of wood is placed to be sawed, n u being pins, or their equivalent, to hold the same firmly in place. `E represents a horizont-al shaft, having its hearings upon the `fraaie, and is provided with a balancewheel, F, and a crank, II, whereby the same may be revolved by hand, or said shaft may be revolved in any other suitable manner. Upon said shaft is fixed a pinion, marked Gr, having the ordinary cogs g upon one-half of its circumference, and having the remainder of its circumference smooth, as indicated in the drawings. This pinion is arranged within o. double rack, marked J, as shown, and by reason of the aforesaid peculiar construetion of the pinion G, the continuous revolution of the shaft E and pinion G in one direction will impart a reeip rocating motion to the rack, und consequently to the saw` N, whose frame, M, is attached to the said reciprocating rack by means et)` the removable pins e e passing through the shank K of the rack andthe handle L of the sawframe. R represents a rod, provided -with a nut, P, by means of which the saw may be adjusted at the proper tension in its frame. a a represent two vertical rods, attached to the upright frame O, having a slide, T, thereupon, which moves freely up and down the same, and through which slide the rod It of the saw-frame passes, and is held in the proper position when the machine is in operation. A cord, b, is attached to said slide T, and passes over a pulley, e, at the top'of the upright frame C, `and thence down to be attached to a pin, z,`
ren thc'frame. Said cord is also provided with a loop, d, which may be drawn up and hitched over a pin, m, to hold the saw up while the stick or log is being adjusted upon` the holder D, before mentioned. When the wood is in vthe proper position, the loop D is released, and the weight of the saw rests upon the wood being sawed, while the machine is operated as before described. i
The power or balance-whcel F is removable from its shaft, when desired, and may he arranged upon a suitable shaft, supported in bearings s in the front of the machine, so that by raising up the rear ofthe same it may he readily moved from placerto place like a wheel-barrow.
We are aware that a double rack and pinion, similar to the one used in our machine, has been used for other purposes, and also that a reciprocating saw, suspended in supports having a vertical adjustment, has been heretofore used; we do not therefore claimbroadly any of the points aforesaid, but simply our specific arrangement.
Having described the construction and operation of our invention, we will specifywhat we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
We claim suspending the saw upon the rod R, passing through a slide, T, which has a vertical movement upon rods a a, attached to the' vertical frame, said slide being provided with a cord, b, passing over a pulley, c,
Aall constructed and operating in the manner las and for the purposes specified.
P. .WERNL R. B. DE BARE.
