SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 716,424, dated December 23, 1902.

Be it known that I, WALTER E. II'UTTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Brake-Shoes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
Myinvention relates to brake-shoes; and it consists of a east-iron brake-shoe in which is embedded a strengthening-plate, of malleable iron or steel, which serves also as a means for securing the brake-shoe to the brake-head.
The object of the invention is to provide a cast-iron brake-shoe having hooks orother devices for securing the same to the brake-head, made of a metal having more strength to resist breakage than cast-iron, and so provide a brake-shoe which will be more durable than those now in use. This object is attained by the use of a strengthening-plate, of ductile metal, having means formed integral therewith for securing it to the brake-shoe and also to the brake-head, the details of construction of which will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
Reference is had to the accompanying drawings, in which the same parts are designatedl by the same numerals of reference throughout the several views, and in which- Figure 1 represents an elevation looking at the convex side of a brake-shoe constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 represents a Vertical section of the same, taken on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 represents a perspective View ot' the strengthening-strip. Fig. 4 represents a modified form of strengthening-plate.
l designates the'cast-iron brakeshoe,which is provided with the usual flange 2, and 3 designates a strengthening-plate, of malleable iron or steel, having the hook 4 formed at its upper end, integral therewith, and a boss 5, also formed integral therewith and near its opposite end. 'Ihe boss 5 is perforated, as at 6, to receive a bolt for securing the lower end of the brake-shoe to the brake-head. The strengthening-plate is provided with pairs of laterally-extending lugs, disposed along its edges as follows: a pair of lugs 7 on each edge `lower end of the plate of the plate 2 at its upper end adjacent to the hook 4, a pair of lugs S on each edge of the plate about the middle thereof, a pair of lugs 9 on each edge near the lower end and adjacent to the boss 5, and a pair of lugs 10 at the All of the said lugs are formed with one or more inclined edges, as shown in Fig. 3, thus forming dovetails, which when the iron of the brake-shoe 2 is cast around them will hold the plate 3 firmly thereto. On the other side of the plate 3, opposite to the hook 4, is formed at its upper end a lugl 11, and at its lower end two similar lugs 12 are formed on the lugs 10. These lugs may be formed at right angles to the plate 3, but are bent inwardly, as shown in Fig. 2, before the said strip is placed in the mold. Openings 13 and 14 may be formed in any part of the plate 3 for the molten iron to enter, and these openings are formed with inclined sides, so that the metal entering said openings will assist in holding the plate in place. I prefer to form one of the openings, as 13, just below the hook 4 and another one, as 14, about the middle of the plate, and this latter opening I prefer to be in the form of a cross, as shown in Fig.
In casting brake-slices according to my invention the plate 3 is placed in the mold with the convex side down, so that the boss 5 and the lugs 11 and 12 will extend into the mold, and when the molten metal is poured into the mold it will flow around these parts and into the spaces between the lugs and also into the holes in the plate, thus firmly embedding the plate 3 in the casting. The finished shoe is secured to the brake-head by means of the boeket-and abolt, (not sl1own,) which may pass through the bolt-hole 6 in the boss 5. By this construction I am enabled to form a brake-shoe having a strengthening-plate of malleable iron or steel embedded therein and having means for securing said brake-shoe to the brake-head through the medium of the said strengthening-plate, thus relieving the cast-iron of all the strain incident to holding the shoe in place. i y
In Fig. 4 I have shown a modified form of strengthening plate designed for use on coach-shoes having a central attaching-lug. In this instance the hook 4 and boss 5 are IPO dispensed with, and the central part of the strengthening-plate is reduced in Width, as at 15, to pass through the usual attachinglug. The lugs 7, 8, and 9 are substantially the same as in the former instance. At each end are formed a pair of lugs 16 and 17, and to the ends of these latter lugs are formed the hooks 18 and 19, which extend into the cast-iron body portion in the same manner as the hooks 11 and 12 illustrated in Fig 2.
Having thus described myinvention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
1. Abrake-shoe comprising a body portion, a strengthening-plate of ductile metal ernbedded in said body portion and having means at each end for securing said brakeshoe to the brake-head.
2. Abrake-shoe oomprisinga body portion, a strengtheningplate of ductile metal embedded in said body portion and having a hook formed integral with one end thereof.
3. A brake-shoe comprising a body portion, a strengthening-plate of ductile metal embedded in said body portion and having a hook formed integral with one end thereof, and dovetail lugs embedded in said casting.
4. A brake-shoe comprising a body portion, a strengthening-plate of ductile metal embedded in said body portion and having a boss extending through said casting and a bolt-hole in the said boss.
y 5. Abrake-shoe comprising a body portion, a strengthening-plate of ductile metal embedded in said body portion and having a hook formed integral with one end thereof and a boss formed near the other end and extending through said casting and a bolthole in said boss.
6. A strengthening-plate for brake-shoes comprising a body portion and means integral therewith for securing said plate to the brake-head, and dovetail lugs along the edges of said body portion to hold the strengthening-plate to the brake-shoe.
7. A strengthening-plate for brake-shoes comprising a body portion and means integral therewith for securing said plate to the brake-head and dovetail lugs along the edges of said body portion, and bent lugs at the ends thereof to hold said strengthening-plate to the cast-iron shoe.
8. A strengthening-plate for brake-shoes comprising a bodyT portion and means integral therewith for securingsaid plate to the brake-headand dovetail lugs along the edges of said body portion,openings having inclined sides, and bent lugs at the ends for holding said strengthening-plate to the cast-iron shoe.
9. A strengthening-plate for brake-shoes, comprising a body portion, a hook integral with said body portion, and means for secur- 'ing said strengthening-plate to the cast-iron shoe.
10. A strengthening-plate for brake-shoes comprising a body portion, a boss integral with said body portion and havingabolt-hole therethrough, and means for securing said strengtheningplate to said cast-iron shoe.
11. A strengthening-plate for brake-shoes, comprising a body portion, a hook integral with said body portion, a boss integral with said body portion and having a bolt-hole therethrough, and means for securing said strengtheningplate to said cast-iron shoe.
12. A strengthening-plate for brake-shoes comprising a body portion having lugs along its edges, and hooks at each end extending inwardly therefrom.
13. A strengthening-plate for brake-shoes comprising a body portion having a reduced central part, lugs along its edges and hooks at each end extending inwardly therefrom.
14. A brake-shoe comprising a body portion, a strengthening-plate of ductile metal embedded in said body portion and having hooks at each end entering said cast-iron body portion.
15. A brake-shoe comprising a body portion, a strengthening-plate of ductile metal embedded in said body portion, having lugs along its edges and hooks at its ends entering said cast-iron body portion.
