TRAVELING-CRANE SCALE.
SPECIFICATION forming; part of Letters Patent No. 716,309, dated December 16, 1902. Application filed March 8, 1902 Serial No. 97,268. (No mode.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, FREDERICK WV. TAY- LOR, and WILLIS H. SARGENT, citizens of the United Statesuresiding at St. J ohnsbury, in the county of Caledonia, State of Vermont, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Traveling Crane Scales, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
Our invention relates to scales designed to be used in connection with traveling cranes, whereby loads may be weighed while suspended from the crane-hoist.
The object of the invention is to provide a scale at the end of the track upon which a traveling crane moves without necessitating the cutting of the frame of-the crane, so as to materially weaken it and without interfering in any way with the ordinary workings of the crane. In the construction of this scale it has been necessary to leave one side of the framework entirely open to allow the hoisting chain to pass down through the mechanism into operative position without interfering in any way with the proper working of the parts; and the invention consists, briefly, in the arrangements of the supporting and operating parts of the apparatus where by the results aimed at may be accomplished without weakening the construction in any way or without impairing the efficiency of the device.
The particular matters in which the invention consists are hereinafter described, and referred to in the appended claims.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation, partly in section, of a traveling-crane scale embodying our invention. Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail,

3 is a plan view, and Fig. 4 a front elevation, of a traveling-crane scale embodying our invention.
In the drawings, a represents that portion of the track which is detached from the main crane-track and is supported on the scale.
It is raised above the main portion of the track, the adjoining part a, of which is graded up to gradually merge into the part a.
The main support of the crane is composed of guides formed of angle-irons b b and an intermediate vertical plate 0, these parts being suitably braced by angle-bracing d. The angleirons b b are provided with suitable openings 6 e,through which project the postsff, resting on the I-beams g, to the lower faces of which are attached the platform-bearings h, resting in the usual way upon knife-edge bearings upon the main levers '11 t, which platform-bearings and main levers are of usual construction and operation. These levers ii are suspended by the usual loops and knifeedge pivots from the eyebolts 70 70, secured at their upper ends to the angle-brackets j j, secured to the plate-guides c.
The carriage Z of the traveling crane is of the usual construction and has the ordinary chain with hook m depending therefrom.
The tops of the I-beams g are shown as of shape to receive and have secured thereto the parts f f, of which the postsf are fiat castings and arranged at each end of the I-beam, while the posts f are round spindles, the rails a being fastened to the upper ends of the castings and spindles.
The brackets j have outstanding arms a, with check-pins at the extreme outer end to receive one eye of the check-rod o to prevent too much play, the other end of check-rod 0 engaging a stay-iron u, bolted to the side of thefiat casting f. This stay-iron u has two check-pins-one for the purpose above noted, to receive one end of the check-rod 0, which prevents end play, and the otherof which receives the end of check-rod 0', which at its opposite end engages a pin or another doublepin stay-iron a, which is bolted to the side of the plate-guides c of the frame.
Suitable cross-bracin g p p is provided, the braces 19 13 extending diagonally partially across the scale-space, so as to leave an open space on one side, as shown in Fig. 3, to allow the hook m to reach the middle of the scale. The brace p is a cross-brace to which one end of each of the braces 19 p is secured, the opposite ends of said braces being secured to the flat posts f.

Various minor modifications and changes may be made without departing from the spirit of our invention.

Having thus described our invention, What we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a traveling-crane scale, the combination with the track, the main guides, posts for supporting the track, the platform-bearings supported from said posts, the main leverssupportingthe platform-bearings, means for supporting the main levers, and crossbrace, so arranged as to leave one side of the scale open, whereby the hoisting-chain of the crane may pass down through the mechanism into operative position Without interfering with the proper working of the parts; substantially as described.
2. In a traveling-crane scale, the combination with the track, the main guides, the posts for supporting the track, I-beams, supported from the posts, platform-bearings attached to said I- beams, main levers supporting the platform-bearings, means for supporting the main levers, and cross-braces so arranged as to leave one side of the scale open, substantially as described.
3. In a traveling-crane scale, the combination with the track, the main guides, the posts for supporting the track, the platform-bearings supported from said posts, the main levers supporting the platform-bearings, means for supporting the main levers, suitable bracing, stay-irons attached to said posts, and check-rods attached to the stay-irons; substantially as described.
4. In a traveling-crane scale, the combination with the track, the main guides, the posts for supporting the track, the platform-bearings supported from said posts, the main levers supporting the platform-bearin gs, means for supporting the main levers, comprising brackets j, arms 72 attached to said brackets, stay-irons u attached to said posts, stay-irons u, check-rods 0, attached to the arms at and stay-irons u, and check-rods 0' attached to stay irons u and u; substantially as described.
5. In a traveling-crane scale, the combination with the track, the main guides, the posts for supporting the track, the platform-bearings supported from said posts, the main levers supporting the platform-bearings, means for supporting the main levers, cross-bracing including diagonal braces 19, and brace 19, suitably fastened together, the braces 19 being attached at one end to the posts; substantially as described.
6. In a traveling-crane scale, the track, fiat postsf upon which the rails. are supported, and I-beams supporting the posts, platformbearings carried by the Lbcam, main levers upon which the platform-bearings rest, main girders, a bracketj attached to the main girders and supporting the main levers, and suitable cross-bracing, stay-irons and check-rods; substantially as described.
