TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CON-CERN Be it known that I, J. P. JOHNSON, of Macon, in the county of Macon, and State of Illinois, have invented a new and improved Cultivator; and I do hereby declare that the following is a. full, clear, and exact description` thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is an elevation of one side of the machine, with portions of the wheel broken away to exhibit parts which are behind it.

This invention relates to certain novel improvements on cultivators, wherein the ploughs or shovels are attached to a frame that is mounted on two wheels, so as to be drawn by two horses, and wherein a drivers scat is applied to said frame in a position which will allow the driverl to guide the ploughs along the rows with his feet.
The object of my invention is to connect together plough or cultivator-beams, which are loosely hinged at their front ends to the carriage-frame by means of diagonal braces attached by loose4 connections to standards rising from said beams, and to apply foot pieces to the plough-beams in such manner that the driver, whilst riding upon the machine, can readily guide the ploughs and control their movements along the rows with his feet, as will bevhereinafter explained. Another .object of my invention is to enable the driver to raise or lower the ploughs or shovels with his feet, in amachine combining the above-mentioned elements, by suspending the rear ends of the shovelsbeams from the axle of the transporting-wheels, by means of chains passingover pulleys, .and provided with stirrups for the feet of the driver, as will be hereinafter explained..
To enable others skilled in the art to understand my invention, I will describe its construction and operation. 4 i In the accompanying drawings, A. represents Athe axle of two transporting-wheels B B, which axle is mainly of wood, its ends being metal pieces, which are bent so as to raise the wooden portion considerably above the hubs of the said wheels. This will leave plenty of room for the axle `to pass unobstructedly over plants undergoing cultivation. The draught-pole C is secured rigidly to the middle of the length of the ax'l'e A, and extends in rear of this axle some distance, receiving upon its rear forked end a seat, D, upon which the driver sits to manage the machine. In front ofthe axle C is a transverse beam, E, which is secured rigidly to the draughtpole C, so as to project equal distances from both sides thereof. To this beam the single-trees a a are attached, and near its ends strong pendants are secured, extending downward some distance, as shown at b b. To these pendants b the forward ends of the two forked plough or shovel-beams F F are attached by means of loose joints or links c c, which will allow the said beams to vibrate freely in every desired directiom These forked beams are curved at their rear ends, and have shovels or ploughs UZ d, of any suitable form, secured firmly to them, as shown in the drawings. Between the two forks of each plough-beam F, a standard, G, is rigidly secured at its lower end by means of a transverse bolt, c, which also secures rmly in place, on the inner side of each beam, a step, g, for the foot of the driver. The standards G'G rise some distance above the carriage-frame of the machine, and are connected together by means of two diagonal braces Gr Gr', which are crossed and pivotecl together at the middle of their length, as clearly shown in fig. 3; These cross-braces are attached to the Astandards Gby means of links or eye-bolts, L, which allow the driver to'raise or lower or to move the ploughs in any desired positionwhile the machine is being drawn along. Several extra holes are made through the rends of the braces G G for allowing the eye-bolts on the braces to be adjusted nearer or further from the central pivot of these braces. The curved braces jj, which are secured to the beams F and to the standards, serve to stay these standards against forward or backward strain. The plough-beams F F are suspended from the axle A by means of chains t t, which pass through eyes aiixed to the axle A, and are carried over grooved pulleys upon the rear side of this axle. These chains have stirrups s s attached to their pendent-ends, into which the driver puts his feet when he desires to raise the ploughs free from the ground. The drivers seat D is located upon the rear end of the'draught-pole C, in rear of theaxle A, so that the driver, whilst sitting upon hisseat, can move and controlv the movements of the ploughs with his feet, while his hands are free, and also so that the driver can conveniently get on and o his seat while the machine is in motion.
I have shown that the two forked plough-beams are loosely hinged to the front part of the machine, so as to allow their rear ends to have a free lateral and vertical play also that the rear parts of these beams are connected together by means of diagonal braces, so attached as to allow the driver tol adjust theA plonghs as he may desire during the forward movement of the machine. These loose connections allow the plough-beams to be spread apart, and to be adjusted toward each other; and while this is the case the braces G G and their standards prevent the plough-beams from turning about their front joints, and keep the ploughs always in an upright position. v
Having described myinvention, .what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is 1. The attachment ofthe forked plough-beams F F to pendants?) b by means of loose joints c c, and the employment, in combination therewith, of the standards G G and diagonal braces G G', steps sgg, and drivers seat D, arranged and operating substantially as described.
2. In combination with plough-beams F, which are attached by loose connections at their forward ends,`
and sustained in position by diagonal braces G G and standards G G, I claim the employment of suspending'- vchains and'stirrups lfor enabling the driver to raise land lower the ploughs, substantially as described.
