UNITED STATES PATEN OFFICE.
VOLNEY W. MASON, JR., OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
CAM.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. |715,830, dated December 16, 1902.
Application tiled April 5, 1902. Serial No. 101.522. (No model.)
To all whom, it puny concern:
Be it known that I, VOLNEY W. MASON, Jr. of New York, in the borough of Manhattan and State of New York, have invented an Improvementin Cams, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like characters on the drawings representing like parts. This invention relates to cams, and has for its object to provide the same with a removable engaging face of a special construction, whereby the same may be made of manganese steel, which, as is welliknowu, is difcult to work by machine, yet possesses qualities especially adapting it for use as the engaging face of a cam which is subjected to severe duty-such, for instance, as when used in a stamp-mill employed for pulverizing ores.
Figure l shows in side elevation a cam embodying this invention. Fig. 2 is a crosssectiou of the same, taken on the dotted line 2 2, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a side View of a cam having a modified form of engaging face. Fig. 4 is a cross-section of the cam shown in Fig. 3; and Fig. 5 is cross-section of the cam, showing another modified form of engaging face.
a, represents the body of the cam, comprising, essentially, an arm having a hole a at one end adapted to be keyed or otherwise secured to a shaft and having a curved side or face a2, which receives upon it the removable engaging face, the removable engaging face consisting, essentially, of a plate l), curved to conform to the curvature of thebody a and 'made of any suitable length; as, for instance,
it may be made long enough to extend from the extremity of the body a to a point at or near its opposite end, where it is secured to the shaft, although in practice it Will be made as long as is necessary for engagement with a tappet or other element. The plate b is formed with ribs b b atV each side thereof, which preferably extend from end to end of the plate, and said plate is made wide enough so that the space between said ribs is sufficient to receive the body a, the ribs thus bearing against opposite sides of said body and serving to prevent lateral movement of the plate relative to said body. In addition to these ribs the plate b is formed with two pairs of ears d, there being one pair on each side of the plate, which overlie the body. In Figs. 1 and 2 these ears are formed as extensions of the ribs b b'. These ears d are adapted to be secured to the body by bolts or rivets d',`and to enable this result to be carried out owing to the difficulty of drilling manganese steel, plugs d2, of easily machineable metal,
are incorporated in the ears, which will be drilled to provide holes for the bolts or rivets. The plate is placedvupon the body a and secured thereto by the bolts or rivets and may be removed whenever desired.
The cam may be made double, as shown in Fig. 1, or it may be made single, and also may be made of any suitable shape so far as my invention is concerned.
Obviously a single pair of ears d may be employed in lieu of two pairs, which are shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
Referring to Figs. 3 and 4, the removable plate b is formed without the ribs at the sides of it; but at a point midway its Width an ear e is formed, (see Fig. 4, and dotted lines, Fig. 3,) adapted to enter a socket formed in the curved face of the body a. The ear e will be provided with a plug e', of easily-machineable metal, which can be drilled to provide a hold for a bolt or rivet e2, which passes through the body and ear.
Referring to Fig. 5, a removable plate, similar to that shown in Figs. 3 and 4, is shown provided with a rib at each side of it.
Having thus described myinvention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A cam composed of a body and a removable engagingface connected thereto composed of llate having ears provided with perforated plugs, and bolts connecting said removable engaging face with the body which pass through said plugs, substantially as described.
2. A cam composed of a body and a removable engaging face connected thereto composed of a plate having a rib at each side of vit and having ears provided with perforated plugs, and bolts connectin g said removable engaging face with the body which pass through said plugs, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
