To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that we, OTTO BERGSTRAESSER, a subject of the Grand Duke of Hesse-Darinstadt, HERMANN LUCAS HANDEL, a subject of 5 the King of Saxony, and J OACHIM DIEDRICH MUES, a citizen of Bremen, all residing at Dresden, Saxony, Empire of Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cigarette-Machines, (for which we have made application for Letters Patent in Great Britain, under No..14,914, dated July 22, 1901; in Germany, B. 29,181, III/79 filed May 3, 1901, now Patent No. 127,721, dated May 4, 1901, concerning the means for removing the cigarette from the tubular guide, in thename of Otto Bergstraesser, Dresden, and in Germany, B. 29,584, III/79 filed July 4, 190l,concerning the cutter device, in the name of Otto Bergstraesser, Dresden,) of which the following is a specification.

The present invention relates to a cigarettemaking machine, and is preferably constructed or used in connection with the machine described and specified in United States patent z 5 to Otto Bergstraesser, No. 649,897, datedMay 22, 1900. However, it can be used in connection with other types of cigarette-making machines.

The invention relates particularly to im provements in the feeding and cutting mechanism for the tobacco roll or cord.

In the machine referred to above one of the three bands for guiding the tobacco-rollt'. e. the base-band ais guided through the mouth- 3 5 piece 0, while a roller G presses upon the tobacco-roll when released from the lateral bands. According to the present invention the base-band turns down in front of the 'mouthpiece, so as not to pass through the mouthpiece. Instead of the wheel or roller G'passing against the tobacco-roll two or more profile-wheels, engaging the tobacco-roll on i all sides, are arranged and effect the formation and introduction of the tobacco-roll into the mouthpiece. By this arrangement choking and jamming of the tobacco is prevented. Further, the base-band in the former construction of machine was forced to run over the mouthpiece edge and even if the latter were rounded off became quickly worn out by friction, which drawback is now prevented.

A further improvement consists in the arrangement of the knife or cutter so as to work in a space between the mouthpiece and the tubularguide for introducing the tobacco-roll into the paper sleeve, said tubular guide receiving the empty sleeve for the introduction This arrangement has the advantage that the cut separating the finished cigarette and the tobacco-roll and simultaneously recutting the latter is effected close behind the end of the paper tube or sleeve. It is, therefore, not necessary to advance the filled sleeve with the tobacco-roll, as in the previous machine, for the cutting operation by the knife.

A further device is provided by which the filled cigarette-tube is slipped or drawn ofi from the tubular guide. This is efiected by means of a hook which engages in a longitu- 7o dinal slot in the tubular guide and at the same time engages behind the filled and separated cigarette. This arrangement has the advantage that the cigarette is safely and without injury or deformation detached from the tubular guide, which is not the case if the cigarette is gripped from the outside by clamping-jaws or the like.

The invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a plan view of a machine comprising the improvements according to the present invention.- Fig. 2 is a section of the front part on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1 on an enlarged scale. Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 showsthe forward end of the tobaccoguide-i. e., the mouthpiece,

cutter, tubular guide, and part of the revolving headin vertical section on the line of 2 2 of Fig. l on an enlarged scale; andFig. 5 0 shows the mouthpiece and the tubular guide viewed from the top on a scale similar to Fig. 4.

The lateral bands 1 are guided in the same manner as in the machine referred to, and 5 they are moved intermittently by means of a ratchet device 2, Fig. 1, and the base-band 3,

Figs. 1 and 2, is operated in the same way.

However, this band does not run through the mouthpiece, but turns downward in front of 1 0 the latter over rollers 4 and 5. The'bottom 6 of the tobacco guide or support is extended beyond the band to 6, Fig. 2, for a short distance beyond which the tobacco-roll t is engaged by the profile-wheels 7 and 8, which, with their half-circular circumferential recess, form the profile of the tobacco-roll and introduce the latter into the tubular mouthpiece 9. Both the profile-wheels are rotated intermittently in accordance with the bands by means of the ratchet device 2 in the same manner as the profile-wheel G is in the prior machine. To the frame portion 10, carrying the mouthpiece 9, the tubular guide 12 is secured by means of a sheet-metal plate or plates 11 in such a manner as to leave a space 13, Figs. 4 and 5, between 10 and 11 for the entry and free operation of the knife 14. This knife is carried by an oscillating lever 16, pivoted at 15, Figs. 1 and 3, and operated by means of a cam 17, mounted on the shaft 18. The paper tube 72, supplied from the revolving head 19, is slipped onto the tubular guide up to the plate 11 by any convenient means, (not shown in the drawings,)-for instance, by means as described in the patent above referred to. After the filling of the tube the knife 14 moves down within the space 13 and cuts the tobacco-roll, this cut being effected close behind the edge of the paper tube It, so that the tobacco projects forward from the tube only to an extent equal to the slight thickness of the plate 11.

For removing the filled cigarettes from the tubular guide the latter is provided on its upper side with a longitudinal slot 20, Figs. 3, 4, and 5. A hook 21, Figs. 2 and 4, enters said slot at the proper moment in order to engage behind the end of the cigarette and to carry the latter with it in its backward movement. In the present construction the hook is carried by an arm 22, which at 23 is linked to a slide 24 and by means of a spring 25 is constantly drawn upward, Fig. 2. Alever 28, pivoted at 26, Fig. 3, and engaging at one end with a cam 27, presses at its other end by means of an adjustable roller 29 against an extension of the arm 22 to cause the engagement of the book when the latter advances toward the tubular guide 12, Fig. 4. The reciprocating motion of the hook is effected by means of a rod 30, operating the slide 24, said rod being reciprocated by a lever 32, pivoted at 31 and operated by a rod 33 from a cam 34, Fig. 2. The pin of the connecting part 37 engages in a slot in the lever 32 and is adjustable therein by means of a screw 36 in a head 35 on the rod 33, whereby an excellent adjustment of the operating length of the lower arm of the lever 32, and thereby the extent of displacement of the hook 21, can be effected.

The operation of the machine is as follows: After the revolving head 19 has by its stepby-step rotation brought an empty paper tube in front of the tubular guide 12 and the tube has been slipped thereon the bands 1 and 3 and the profile-wheels 7 and 8 are caused to operate and to move forward the tobacco-roll to an extent equal to the length of the cigarette through the mouthpiece 9 and the tubular guide 12 into the paper tube, whereupon the knife 14 separates the cigarette thus formed from the tobacco-roll. Immediately afterward the hook 21 enters the slot in the tubular guide and engages behind the end of the cigarette in order to draw the latter off from the tubular guide. A further partial rotation of the revolvinghead 19 carries the finished cigarette away and at the same time feeds a new tube in front of the tubular guide.

What we claim as our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. In a cigarette-machine, the combination with the mouthpiece, the profile-wheels having semicircular circumferential grooves between which the tobacco-roll is fed and introduced into the mouthpiece, and the side and base bands for guiding the tobacco-roll to the profile-wheels, said bands being deflected in front of the profile-wheels, and means for in termittently moving said bands and revolving the profile-wheels.

2. In a cigarette-machine, the combination with the tubular mouthpiece, the profilewheels between which the tobacco-roll is fed and by which the roll is introduced into the mouthpiece, the side and base bands for guiding the tobacco-roll,said base-band passing downward in frontof the profile-wheels, as and for the purpose set forth.

3. In a cigarette-making machine, the com bination with the cutter for severing the tobacco-roll, a tubular guide for receiving the end of paper tube said guide being mounted upon a mouthpiece in such manner as to leave a space between its end and the mouthpiece wherein a cutter operates to sever the tobaccoroll substantially as described.

4:. In a cigarette-machine, the combination with the tubular guide for receiving the end of the paper tube, a support for said tube, a flanged plate for securing said guide to its support in such manner as to leave a space between said tube and support and a mouthpiece carried by the support opposite the tubular guide, and a cutter or knife adapted to operate in the space between the support and tubular guide; substantially as'described.

5. In a cigarette-making machine, a guide for the cigarette, a device for removing the finished cigarette from its guide comprising a hook and means for intermittently depressing and reciprocating the same, said guide being provided with a slot or opening into which the hook enters, substantially as described.

6. In a cigarette-machine, the combination with the tubular guide adapted to receive the empty tube for the introduction of the tobacco-roll, mechanism for severing the cigarette and mechanism adapted to engage behind the cigarette to draw it from the tubular guide; substantially as described.

7. In a cigarette-making machine, a slotted guide for the cigarette, a device for removing the finished cigarette from its slotted guide ICC comprising a hook 21 mounted on a pivoted arm and a reciprocating rod upon which said arm is carried and an oscillating lever 32, means for periodically reciprocating said rod and means for depressing the end of the pivoted arm, substantially as described.

8. In a cigarette-machine, the combination with the slotted tubular cigarette-guide, a device for removing the finished cigarette from its slotted tubular guide, consisting of a hook, the arm carrying said hook, the slide upon which said arm is pivotally mounted, the rod carrying the slide and oscillating lever engaging at one end with the said rod, means for oscillating said lever and means for varying the throw of said lever; substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

9. In a cigarette-machine, the combination with the slotted tubular cigarette-guide, a device for removing the finished cigarette from its slotted tubular guide, consisting of the reoiprocatory hook adapted to enter the slot in the guide, the rod for reciprocating said hook, the oscillating lever connected at one end to said reciprocating rod, and provided at the other end with an adjustable extension, a rod connected to said extension and means for reciprocating said last-mentioned rod; substantially as described.

10. In a cigarette-macl1ine,the combination with the slotted tubular cigarette guide, means for removing the finished cigarette fromthe tubular guide, consisting of the reciprocating hook adapted to enter the slot in the guide, the rod for reciprocating the hook, the oscillating lever connected at one end to said rod, and provided with a slot at theother end, a rod 33, a head on said rod, a connection between said rod 33 and oscillating lever working through said head and engaging in the slot in said oscillating lever, means for adjusting said connection in the slot of the lever, whereby the throw of the lever may be varied and a cam on the drive-shaft for operating the rod 33; substantially as described.

11. Inacigarette-making machine,the combination of a tubular slotted guide and papertube support 12 and a cutter 14 intermediate said guide and paper-tube support, andthe hook for removing the cigarette from the tubular guide, substantially as described.

12. Inacigarette-makingmachine,thecombination of a tobacco-feeding band, profilewheels in front of said band, a slotted tubular guide in front of said Wheels and a cutter operating immediately at the back of said tubular guide, substantially as described.
