To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, HERBERT ALFRED LU- OAS BARRY, a subject of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, residing at l5 Great George street, in the city of Westminster, England, have invented a new and useful Improved Winch Applicable for Use in Connection with Means for 'Transporting Materials, (in respect whereof I have applied for a patent in Great Britain, to bear date June l5, 1901, No. l2,243,) of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved method of constructing and working Winches, more particularly, though not exclusively, adapted for employment with transporters of the type wherein two ropes are employed, the one for lifting and lowering as well as for traveling the load and the other for traveling the carriage and load, the objects of the present invention being to render such Winches incapable of free action While effecting the change from one position to another of the clutch and to provide means for driving the drums at a relatively different speed.
Friction-Winches as ordinarily constructed and wherein the winding-drum is alternately clutched with the driving mechanism or with means for holding it stationary have proved unsatisfactory and often dangerous, owing to the fact that during the coupling or uncoupling of the parts of the clutch there occurs an interval when the drum is capable of being revolved, owing to the part being under the strain of the load. The laterally-movable drum C is maintained in frictional contact with the drum B by means of a spiral opening c',where of one end is carried by a sleeve u, mounted loosely on the shaftA and abutting against the adjacent bearing D,the other end of the spring taking its bearing against the inner side of the boss c2 of the drum C. Fast on the shaft and between the drums is a friction-disk E, the coned surface e whereof is arranged to engage a coned surface 0X, with which the annular ring c pertaining to the laterally-movable drum C is provided. Upon imparting a longitudinal movement to the shaft A,which in the construction illustrated is effected by the forked lever F through the instrumentality of the lever F and connecting-rod F2, the disk may be put into or out of frictional contact with the laterally movable drum. The forkfof the lever F embraces the shaft A between collars ct a', the lever being fulcrumed at f in the bracket or supportfz. The lever F works over a setting-quadrant F3, a bolt F4 on the lever engaging with teeth f3 on the said quadrant. Upon the shaft A is mounted a worm-wheel C', which is capable of sliding upon the shaft by means of a feather and feather-way. The worm-wheel is driven by a worm C2, the latter being rotated by a bevel-wheel C3 on the worm-shaft C4 meshing with a bevel-wheel C5 on the shaft C6, which is driven from the engine. The laterally-held drum B is furnished with a spurwheel B', with which meshes a spur-pinion B2, driven by the engine. The worm C2 may be rendered operative by means of a clutch C7, the latter being controlled or worked bya le- ICO ver C8 in connection, by means of the link C9, with the lever C10 pertaining to the movable part of the clutch.
In working a transporter with the aid of the improved winch, assuming the laterallymovable drum C to be moved out of engagement with the laterally-held drum B and the disk E on the shaft A to be in engagement with the drum C, the shaft will be held stationary by the worm gear C C2. Consequently the laterally-movable drum C cannot rotate. The drum B is, however, free to be rotated by the spur-gearing B B2, so as to lift or lower the load. In order to put into operation dumping mechanism of the type wherein the retu rn-block carries a hook which is arranged so as to move vertically in relation to the block-casing, a plunger which is in lnechanical connection with the said casing being so arranged that upon the motion of the carriage being reversed the said plunger operates a trigger-lever carried bythe bridle of the bucket and releases thelatter, two ropes being employed for manipulating the carriage and the load, it is necessary to slowly wind the rope on the laterally-movable drum C,wl1ile (in lowering the load) the rope is paid out faster from the drum B. This is acceuiplished by rendering the clutch C7 operative, the worm C2 thereupon eifecting the rotation of the worm-wheel C', the disk E and drum C rotating therewith. Vhen it is desired to travel the load, the disk E is moved away from the drum C by pulling over the lever F', and thereby imparting a longitudinal movement to the shaft A, with the result that during the receding of the disk E the drum C follows by means of the pressure exerted thereon by the spring c', and so maintains engagement between the surfaces c and e until the parts of the coupling upon each drumi. e., the surfaces b and c-become engaged, when the disk E, completing its lateral movement, becomes disengaged from the drinn C. Both drums are now in engagement by means of the friction-coupling b c, the driving of the drum B effecting the simultaneous rotation of the drum C and, as the case may be, winding or paying out the respective ropes at an equal pace.
From the foregoing it will be apparent that there is no point at which the laterally-movable drum C is uncoupled from the drum B and at the same time out of contact with the friction-disk E.
By the employment of suitable gearing the shaft A and disk E may be rotated in the opposite direction to that of the spur-wheel B.
Under these circumstances the laterally-movable drum C would be rotated in the same direction as the spur-wheel B or in the direction of the disk E.
By directly connecting one part of the friction-coupling-for example, the part b-with the spur-wheel B the arrangement may be adapted for employment as a single-drum winch.
What l claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. A winch constructed substantially as herein described and comprising a shaft having mounted thereon a pair of drums whereof one is movable in alateral direction, by means of a coupling-disk mounted on the said shaft and intermediate the drums whereby the latter are put into and out of operation so as to act coujointly or separately without free action of the winch while changing the coupling-disk from one position to another, substantially as set forth.
2. A winch constructed substantially as herein described and comprising a shaft, a pair of drums mounted on said shaft and whereof one is movable laterally, a couplingdisk also mounted on said shaft between the drums, means for operating the disk and the laterally-movable drum whereby the drums are rendered capable of joint or of separate operation, without permitting free action while effecting the change from one position to another of the disk, and means for driving the drums at a relatively different speed, substantially as set forth.
In a winch, the combination, with ashal't A, of a drum B loosely mounted thereon and a drum C also mounted on the said shaft but laterally movable thereon, coupling-disk E engaging one or both the drums, a spring c', levers F, F for operating the shaft and the disk E, and spur-gearing B', B2, substantially as and for the nurposes specified.
4. In a winch, the combination, with a shaft A, of drums B, C, respectively formed with frictional surfaces l), c, spring c', couplingdisk E, levers F, F', spur-gearing B', B2, wormgearing C', C2, and clutch CI all arranged and operating substantially as and for the purposes specified.
