SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 715,501, dated December 1902- 'Application filed August 14,1902. Serial No. 119,609- (No model-Y To all whom it concern:
Be it known that I, J OHN C. lVICNAMARA, a citizen of the United States, residing at Troy, county of Rensselaer,and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Awnings, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to such improvements; and it consists of the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described and subsequently claimed.
Reference may be had to the accompanying drawings and the reference characters marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Similar characters refer to similar parts in the several figures.
Figure 1 is a view in perspective of my improved awning applied to a window-casing. Fig. 2 is a View, partly in front elevation and partly in section, of the attaching socket member for one end of the U-shaped supporting-frame. Fig. 3 is a'view in side elevation of the same. Fig. 4 is a view in front elevation of the combined cleat and attaching socket member for the other end of the U-shaped supporting-frame. My invention relates to folding awnings; and the principal object of my invention is to facilitate the application of awnings to and their removal from the casings of windows or the like.
Referring to the drawings, 1 is a supporting-frame in the form of an inverted U adapted to be detachably secured to a window-casing, and 2 is a U-shaped spreadingframe having its ends connected with the parallel members of the supporting-frame by sliding hinge connections. 3 is a covering of fabric mounted upon said frames. The frame 1 forms a support for both the spreading frame 2 and the awning fabric. This supporting-frame may be connected with the casing in any known manner. I have shown the same detachably connected therewith and suspended from a pair of upwardly opening hooks 4, secured to the upper part of the casing and with the ends of its parallel members 5 5. each inserted in an attaching socket member, whereby the same is detachably secured to the casing. The socket member for one of said parallel members is shown in Figs. 2 and 3 in the form of a screw-cap applied to the end of the frame-rod and provided with offsetting ears 6, having formed 7 therein slotted apertures 7, adapted to receive attaching-screws 8. The slotted apertures 7 are so formed that the socket member can be attached and detached by merely loosening said screws without entirely with drawing the same. The socket member 9 for the other frame-rod is combined in asingle integral casing with the cleat 10, adapted to receive the awning-rope in the usual manner, said socket member and cleat having a common attaching-base 12, provided with slotted: 8o apertures 13, adapted to receive attachingscrews 14 and whereby said plate can be attached to and detached from the casing by merely tightening and loosening said screws without removing the same. The parallel members of the supporting-frame form guiderods for the runners 15, connected with the respective ends of the spreading-frame, each of said runners comprising a socket member 16, screw-connected with an end of the spreadingframe and having an offsetting diagonally-disposed loop 18, adapted to embrace and move upon a guide-rod formed by one of the parallel members 5 of the supporting-frame. This loop is so disposed that when the spreadingframeis in either its lowered or raised position it will bind upon the guide-rod and prevent rattling when the awningis either in use or out of use. This loop forms a hinge connection as well as a sliding connection between the loo spreading and supporting frames, permitting the supportingframe to swing upwardly on an axis passing through said hinge connections until the same assumes a position parallel with the supporting-frame and then to be raised vertically upward the loops 1S sliding upon the respective guide-rods of the supporting-frame.
The awning may be raised or lowered by means of the cords 20, connected at one end with the cross-rod of the spreading-frame and passing through loops or guideways 21, secured to the cross-rod of the supportingframe.
It will thus be seen that the supportingframe supports and carries all of the awning proper and that the complete awning can be detached from the casing at any time by merely removing or loosening the screws 8 and 14, which permit the socket members to be detached and then lifting the supportingframe and connected members of the awning out of the hooks 4:, the hooks being left permanently in the casing.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a folding awning, the combination with a vertical guide-rod secured to a casing; of a spreading-frame;a runner mounted upon an end of the spreading-frame and having a diagonally-disposed loop embracing and movable on said guide-rod and adapted to bind thereupon in a raised or lowered position of the spreading-frame; and means for raising and lowering the spreading-frame, substantially as described.
2. In an awning, the combination with a guide-rod; of an attaching socket member, cleat and base-plate integrally connected with each other, substantially as described.
