ALBERT HAUSSMANN, OF FOND DU LAC, WISCONSIN.
TOOTH- BRUSH.
:sPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 715,263, dated December 9, 1902.
Application filed April 1, 1901.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT HAUSSMANN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Fond du Lac, in the county of Fond du Lac and State of WVisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tooth- Brushes; and I do hereby declare that the followingisa full, clear, and exact description thereof. I
My invention relates to toothbrushes designed to brush the outer and inner surfaces of the teeth at the same time; and it consists in certain peculiarities of construction and combination of parts, as will be fullyset forth hereinafter in connection with the accompanying drawings and subsequently claimed.
In the said drawings, Figure l is a front elevation of a tooth-brush embodying my invention, and Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same.
Referring to the drawings, a represents the handle proper of the device made of any suitable materialsuch as bone, ivory, wood, metal, hard rubber, or other composition and secured thereto, as by pins, screws, or rivets Z) Z), are the shanks c 0, preferably flat strips of spring metal, of the brush-holders d 61, said shanks 0 beyond the end of the handle ct being curved outwardly in opposite directions, and thence rearwardly and finally forwardly, as shown at e, and permanently secured, as by soldering or otherwise, to the brush-holders d.
The brush-holders d are preferably formed of flat metallic plates having spring-tongues ff projecting from their upper, lower, and side edges, as shown, and curved or inwardly inclined, so as to securely hold the brushbacks g, which are held in place by being slipped or snapped past said tongues. The edges of the brush-backs are suitably curved or inclined for engagement with said correspondingly-bent tongues, and the outer or opposed faces of said brush-backs are each further preferably curved on the arc of an ellipse and provided with any suitable brushing devices, such as the rows of bristles h h shown.
With my device should the bristles or other bushing material become worn out the brush- Serial No. 53,75 2. (No model.)
backs can be removed and replaced by new brushes or brush-backs may be provided in interchangeable series having brushes of different degrees of stiffness or softness to he used as required, one handle and pair of spring-shanks serving for any of the same, this being a matter of considerable advantage, as where a silver or other expensive handle is employed.
The opposing pair of brushes are arranged in longitudintal planes slightly oblique to the longitudinal plane of the handle, and the ends of the shanks 0 beyond the handle dare outwardly curved in opposite directions, and then each shank end is further rearwardly and then forwardly curved, as shown and described, the object being to permit the brushes to be brought closely together, so as to clean both sides of the teeth at once, and at the same time by reason of the described oblique arrangement of the brushes relative to the handle and the described peculiar curving of the shanks to prevent unpleasant contact between the shanks and the lips and mouth of the user.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A tooth-brush comprising a handle, oppositely-disposed substantially oblong brushes arranged in longitudinal planes, slightly oblique to the longitudinal plane of the handle,
and means for connecting said brushes to one end of the handle comprising yieldable arms each fastened at one end to the handle and at the other end to one of the brushes, said arms being curved in opposite directions to separate the same and both curved rearwardly in the same direction from the.
handle and thence forwardly to their points of connection with the brushes substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand, at Fond du Lac, in the county of Fond du Lac and State of Wisconsin, in the presence of two witnesses.
ALBERT HAUSSMANN. Witnesses:
A. H. FURSTNOW, HENRY B. Louis.
