To ALL PERSONS To WHoM THESE PRESENTS SHALL COME: Y
Be it'known thatrI, FREDERICK HIGPgof Methuen, in the county of Essex, and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new aud useful Improvement in4 Looms for weaving fabrics; and I do hereby declare the same to be fully described in the following specification, and represented in the accompanying drawings, of which--` i Figure 1 denotes a top viewof aioom-frame, and its lay, as provided with my invention.
Figure 2 is an endelevationzof the same.
,The purpose of my linvention is to arrest the shuttle in its box after, and to release it preparatory to, cach` throw, thc same being to-prevent a 'rebound' of theshuttle; also, injury to the pick-ers and their staves; also,
the displacement of the bobbin in the shuttle. t
In 'the drawings, A denotes tbe loom frame;` B, the lay; C, the driving-shaft of `the lay, such 'shaft being applied to the lay by cranks a`a and connecting-rods b arranged in the usual manner., .Alongside oftheracebeanie ofthe lay, and about on a level with itsV lower edge, `I arrange along rocker-shaft, d, parallel withthe lay, and support it in bearings c e, extended from the race-beam. An arm,"f, is toproject up from each end of the' shaft d. In the front sid-e oi' the shuttle-box of ,the lay there should be a passageor opening, to allow-'the` `said armmto enter the box and be borne against the shuttle. Another arm, g, extends downward from theshaft d, and between two studs, h z, exten-ding Vfrom a slider, lc, that slides transverselythrough aV puppet, 1, arranged on theloom-frame, in manner as represented.'4 The slider has a collar or stop, m, which, when forced back against one of the puppet-.heads by a springno, (pla-ccd on the slider, and so as to bear against `the said stop andthe other head of the puppet,) serves to arrest tbe'movcment of the slider in ne direction.
While the lay may be in the act of falling back, andthe shuttle is being thrown, the army `will be carried/U i 2 l against the back-stud of the slider b. The resistanceoiered by the slider andits spring will canse the arm to- V p turn the rocker-shaft d, and force the armf against the shuttle, so as to arrest its motion a'nd hold it iirmly, in A p 1 `n manner to relieve the picker from the momentum of the shuttle before or just lpreviousto the bringing up l of the picker against the stop or staff thereof. t The degree of pressure of thearm f against the shuttle' may be,` regulated by means of an adjusting stop-screw, o, and a crosspiece,p, the latter being ixed on therockerlshaft l transversely thereof, as shown in the drawings. lay, the whole being as represented;
During a'n' 'advance of the lay, in
The stopscrc\v o screws through un` arm, q, extended from the contact with the zii-mf preparatory to the next throw of the shuttle.
The shaftd has one or two other arms, r r, extended from it, the bein intended to ut in aetionthc y g P stopping mechanism of the loom whenever the shuttle may not be thrown into its box, for,in such case, the
rocker-shaft would bc turned so much as. to'elevate the` arm or arms r to a position high enough for such arm or` arms to be carried by the lay into contact with that or ,those part-s of the loom-stopping mechanism whiehuserve p y to actuatc the said mechanism in a manne?i 'to cause it to eect a stoppage of the loom..
4I claim the combination pf the shaft cl, and its armsfg, .with the puppet l and `the slider lc, itsstuds ha',
spring n, and collar m, the whole being applied together as Vand for the purpose or objects specied.
I also claim the combination of such mechanism, or its equivalent, with the loom-frame and lay,to operate with the `shuttle as specified.
I also claim the combination of puppet Z, ,the slider lc, its` studs h z', spring n, and collar m, or the equivalents thereof. i y FRED; HAIGH.

order to beat up the filling intothe warps, tbefarm g will be carricdagainst thc forward stud of the slider. This will cause the rocker-shaft t be turned,.so as to relieve the shuttle from the stops'crewro and cross-piece p, with the shaft d and its armsfg, the u
