To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Gnonnn Ilnxav HILL- YER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Duluth, in the'county of St; Louis and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Motor-Han dies for Tools; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enro' able others skilled in the art tqwhich it appertains to make and use the same. I This invention relates to improvements in tool-handles, and particularly to a handle provided with a contained motor.
:5 The object in view-is the prodnctionof a tool-handle designed to carry any suitable tool and to contain a. motor for driving the tool, theword motor being meant in its broadest sense andindicating any type of engine, whether electric or otherwise.
A further object is the provision of such a handle having means for changing the speed of the tool carr'iedt-hereby.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in certain ncvelconstructions, combinations, and arrangements of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described and cla med.
In the accompanying drawing, the figure 3 represents a longitudinal central section taken through a tool-handle embodying the features of the present invention.
"In order to facilitate access to the interior of the present tool-handle, 1 preferably employ, as seen in the accompanying drawing, suitable hollow sections, as 1 and 2, threaded or otherwise suitably, preferably detachably, secured together. Arranged longitudinally within these sections is a driving-shaft, as 3, go operated by a magnet, as 6, surrounded by field 7, saidshaft havinga journal 4, finding a bearing in an elongated block, as 5, and mounted to slide longitudinally therein fora short distance, an electric current being supplied to the parts, preferably through conductors passed through any 'snitableinsulatlug-block 8 in the end of section 1. the sleeve being iii-ted against longitudinal movement, so'that movement of the arm 17 will shift shaft 3 longitudinally, said arm 17 extending through a longitudinal slot, 8.318, in section 2, and being preferably formed with an operating-button, as 19, at its outer end. A shaft,.as 11, finds bearing at one endin a portion of bracket 16 and at. the other end in the end of section 2, said shaft being arranged longitudinally of said section and carrying a comparatively large gear-wheel, as 10, and acomparatively small gear 13. A- connecting-rod, as 14, extends through the end of section 2 in axial alinemeut with shaft 3. being formed within said section with a comparatively large gear-wheel, a820, meshing with gear 13, "and outside the end otsaid section with an annular flange, as 21, for retaining the same against longitudinal movement. The outer end of rod 14 is formed with a tool-carrying head, as 15, and. the inner end is formed with a squared or polygonal notch, as :22. The shaft 3 is provided with a 15 fixed comparatively small gear-wheel, as 9, designed when said shaft is at one extreme of its longitudinal movement to mesh with gear 10, and the shaft is further provided with a square or polygonal block, as 12, designed to fit snugly into notch 22 when the said shaft is at the other extreme of its longitudinal movement, the said gear being out of mesh when the block is in said notch and the block being out of said notch when the gear-wheels are brought into mesh, It will be apparent that by simply sliding button 19' from one end to the other of slot 18 the speed of head 15 may be increased or decreased, as desired.
Having thus fully described my invention,- what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, i's 1 1. A tool-handle comprising a suitable hollow body, a motor arranged therein, a shaft slidably connected with said motor, tool-carrying means receiving movement from said shaft, gearing connecting said shaft with the tool-carrying means when at either extreme of its movement, and means for shifting said shaft, substantially as described.
