BOTTLE FILLING AND STOPPERING MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 714,511, dated November 25, 1902.

T jv/ZZ whom it may concern: Be it known that l, RICHARD GRAINGER NASH, asubject of the King of Great Britain `and Ireland, residing at Finnstown House,` Lucan, near Dublin, Ireland, have invented a certain new and useful Improved Bottle Filling andStoppering Machine, (in respect whereof I have applied for a patent in Great Britain to bear date October 11, 1900, No.
18,128,) of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to apparatus, hereinafter termed a bottling-machine, for charging bottles or similar receptacles with liquors-#such as aerated waters, beers, wines, j
milk, tc.`-and forstoppering or sealing such bottles or receptacles when so charged, the
said apparatus being capable of employ ment with screw-caps, screw-Stoppers, and other sealing devices.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is `a front elevation, and Fig. 2 a side elevation, of apparatus for charging bottles or similar receptacles constructed according to my improved method, Fig. 3 being an elevation of a portion of such apparatus. Fig. 4.- is a horizontal section through the filling-chamber, showing the controlling-valve and passages, Fig. 5 being a section on the line m 00in Fig. 4:. Figs. 6 and 7 are views of the stopperholding jaws drawn to a larger scale.
The apparatus comprises a vertical frame A and a slide B, vertically movable in the `frame A and to which longitudinal moveing nozzle or chamber E is pivotally and eccentrically mounted in bearings a., secured to the frame A, and is provided with crank-arms .e, which, as shown in Fig. 3, engage with a recess b in the slide B, the extremity or charging-orifice@ of the said nozzle being furnished `with packing material for making a joint `upon the mouth of the bottle. The charging nozzle or chamber E mayE be provided with a snifting-valve F for releasing the pressure in the usual manner, this valve F being operated by the lever g pertaining to the valve GrV for admitting liquid to the charging nozzle or chamber E, the said lever for this purpose carrying an adjustable rodr g', adapted to engage a spring-pressed plunger g2, which in turn actuates the rod fof the snifting-valve F. The device for effecting the sealing of the receptacle is arranged above the charging-nozzle E and is also carried by or engaged with the slide B. It comprises a spindiel H, supported in a vertical position by and capable of longitudinal movement through fixed bearings H II/ and furnished with jaws or equivalent means for engaging with the screw cap or stopper. These 4jaws may consist of levers or arms h, pivoted in lugs h', formed on or secured to the spindle H, the upper ends of the said levers h being forced outward by the action of a cured to the spindle H, is a spring h4, encircling the said spindle and serving to hold the upper ends h5 of the jaw-levers h firmly against the sleeeve, and thereby to close the stopper-grippers. When the foot-lever C is depressed, the sleeve I is raised in opposition to the spring h4, and the spindle I-I being prevented (owing to the collar h3 abutting against the bearing H2) from ascending the stopper-grippers h are opened by their spring or springs h2, ready for receiving a stopper which is held by the grippers as soon as the foot-lever C is released. The spindle H may be operated rotatively `by means of bevel-gearing .I J or other suitable means. When bevel gearing is used as shown in the drawings, the wheel J is feathered to the spindle H, so as to allow the latter to slide longitudinally through the said wheel. The bottle during the operation of filling and sealing is supported upon a platform K, carried by abracket Af, secured to the frame A of the machine. The platform is secured to the upper extremity of a spindle k, a spiral or other suitable spring k maintaining the platform vat the desired height. The platform, which is preferably recessed on the upper side for the reception of the bottle, may by means of a bell-crank or other lever K be lowered for facilitating the introduction of the bottle.
The operation is as follows: Assuming that a bottle is to be charged with aerated water and to be sealed with a screw-cap, the footlever C being depressed, and consequently the nozzle or chamber E being in the charging position, as shown i'n Figs. l and 2, the platform K is lowered by means of the handlever K and the bottle placed in position thereon. Upon the release of the said lever K the bottle is raised by the spring 7c until its mouth arrives against the charging-orifice e', or the mouth of the bottle may be placed against the orifice c and the platform K be then raised into contact with the bottom of the bottle. The supply-valve Gis now opened and the bottle charged. This is accomplished by drawing forward the lever g and imparting a rotative movement to the screwed spindie g3, which carries the valve G. The latter is thereupon unseated and the liquid and gas, which have previously entered the chamber g4 by way of the pipe g5, pass into the charging-nozzle E by way of the passage Q6 and thence through the orice e into the bottle, a further movement of the lever g bringing the rod g against and forcing back the plunger g2, and consequently through the latter.

The charging of the bottle having been effected, the slide B is lowered by the release of the foot-lever C. The chargingnozzleE is thus caused to move backward, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3, and to recede from the mouth of the bottle out of the path of the rotating sealing device, so as to permit of the descent of the said sealing device. The cap gripped between the jaws h is thereby not only applied to the mouth of the bottle, but immediately screwed home. The charged bottle may then be removed from the machine either by lowering the platform K by means of the lever K or by raising the sealing device by means of the foot-lever C.
If desired, the motions of the several parts may be eifected by means of suitably-timed cams or the like, the action of the whole apparatus being thus rendered automatic.
Where seals or capsules as distinguished from screw-caps or screw-Stoppers are employed, a rotative movement need not beimparted to the seal-applying mechanism. Its gripping action may, however, be utilized for closing the edges of the seal or'capsule about the mouth of the bottle.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. A bottling-machine having asupport for the vessel to be charged and a rotating and longitudinally-movable sealing device coaxial with the support, and a charging-chamber movable into and out of a position in which its charging nozzle or orifice is coaxial with the sealing device and support, substantially as set forth.
2. A bottling-machine having a longitudinally-movable and rotatable sealing device and a charging-chamber movable into and out of a position in which its charging nozzle or orifice is coaxial with the sealing device, substantially as set forth.
3. In a bottling-machine, the combination, with a vertically-movable sealing device and a support adapted to hold the vessel to be charged with its mouth coaxial with the sealing device, of a charging-chamber pivoted so that it may be moved alternatively into the path of the sealing device with its orifice over the mouth of the vessel and out of said path and away from the vessel, substantially as set forth.
4. In a bottling-machine, the combination, with the fixed frame and a sealing device vertically movable thereon and a support adapted to hold the Vessel to be charged with its mouth coaxial with the sealing device, of a charging-nozzle pivoted so that it may be moved in a vertical plane through a circular arc into and out of the path of the sealing device, substantially as set forth.
5. In a bottling-machine, the combination, with the fixed frame and a slide and vesselsupport vertically movable thereon, of a vertically movable and rotatable sealing device and an eccentrically-pivoted charging-nozzle both in operative connection with the slide, substantially as set forth.
6. In a bottling-machine, the combination, with the fixed frame and a slide vertically movable thereon, of a vertically movable and rotatable sealing device and a charging-cham ber pivoted to the frame and operatively connected with the slide so that, when the slide is moved, the charging nozzle or orifice is moved through a circular arc, substantially asset forth.
7. In a bottling-machine, the combination, with the fixed frame and a slide vertically movable thereon, of a vertically movable and rotatable sealing device, a charging-chamber pivoted to the frame and operatively connected with the slide, and charging and snifting valves for the charging-chamber both opened by the same operating device, substantially as set forth.
8. In a bottling-machine, the combination, with the xed frame and a charging-chamber pivoted thereto so as to be capable of moving in a vertical plane, of charging and snifting valves for the chamber, the operating-lever of the charging-valve carrying an adj nstable rod which,through a spring-pressed plunger movable in the xed frame, opens the sniftingvalve.
9. In a bottling-machine, the combination, with the fixed frame, a slide vertically movable therein, a charging-chamber eccentric- IOO IIO
