CONSTRUCTION OF HIGH-PRESSURE WATER-TAPS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 713,740, dated November 18, 1902.

To all whom, it Ina/y concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM BRADLEY, a subject of the King of Great Britain, and a resident of 18 Collegiate Crescent, Sheffield, county of York, England, have invented certain new and usefulImprovements in the Construction of High-Pressure Water-Taps, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my present invention is to construct a high-pressure water-tap in which the valve has to close in the opposite direction to the flow of the water, which' shall open suddenly to its full extent and shall also close suddenly and be retained in both positions by the water in the body of the tap.
Referring to the drawings which form a part of my specification, Figure 1 is a vertical section of an improved tap arranged to be operated bya float-lever. Fig. 2 is a plan of the upper face of the valve or valve-head.
Although I have shown the tap as operated by a float-lever, it may be arranged to be operated by hand without departing from the principle of my invention.
The body of the tap is made with the waterinletA to open into the lower part ofa vertical cylinder B, and this cylinder, which may be open at the top, receives the valve-rod C, provided with a cup-leather D, which fits the cylinder above the inlet, and an attached piece E, with which the float-lever F engages when turned upon its pivot G. The outlet is made through the base of the cylinder and is marked H. It is of a smallerdiameter than the cylinder and terminates in a downwardlyprojecting annular lip I, against which the seating J of the valve is pressed when the tap is closed. The valve-head upon the lower end of the rod C is located underneath and outside the outlet H and is preferably surrounded by a skirting K, within which it fits loosely. It consists of a seating J, of leather or the like, held within the flange of a metallic ring N by means of a screw-threaded disk M, which is also secured to the valve-rod C. The periphery of the ring is provided with waterways, such as P, for the passage of the water when the tap is open. A metal disk Q upon the valve-rod rests upon the seating J, and when the valve is closing it enters the outlet and stifles the flow of water gradually until eventually an equilibrium point is reached. Continued pressure of the floatlever overcomes this, and the greater pressure upward, due to the larger area of the cylinder, causes the valve to close suddenly.
As asubstitute for the above I may use the inside edge of the flange upon the ring N and a corresponding edge R upon the before-mentioned lip I, as shown, or I may use both these stifling devices in combination.
When the tap is closed, the water-pressure inside against the cup-leather D holds the valve to its seat, and when the valve is open the flow of water through the outlet and over the large area of the head holds it open until subjected to a superior forcenamely, that of the float-lever.
Having thus described my invention and how it is carried into practice, what I desire to claim is In a high-pressure tap,the combination with the casing having a water-inlet, a cylindrical part above the inlet, and an outlet of smaller diameter than said cylindrical part, said outlet having a suitable exterior valve-seat, of a valve coacting with said valve-seat, a valverod extending upward from said valve into the cylindrical part, a cup-leather carried by the said valve-rod within the cylindrical part, a float-lever having a loose connection with said valve-rod wherebya limited independent movement of the valve-rod with relation to the float-lever is permitted, and a part or member moving with the valve and cooperating with the water-outlet to materially restrict the flow of water when the valve is in proximity to its seat, substantially as described.
