Description

@uitrit ttstrs atrat @fitta HENRY r. HOLT, Or FREDONIA, Naw YORK, AssIeNOR 'ro HIMSELF, o.
' ABBOTT, AND n P-Annan.
Letters Patent No. 71,304, dated llomamberl 26, 1867.
IMPROVEMENT IN FASTENING TOPS T0 BUGGIES.
TO ALL WIIOM- IT MAY GONCERN:
Be it known that I, HENRY'F. HOLT, of Fredonia, in the county of Chautauqua, and State of New York, have invented a ce-rtain improved Fastening for Securing Tops to Buggy-Seats; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had tothe accompanying drawing, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure I is a front elevation of buggy-seat and top.
Figure II, a. side elevation of same; and
Figure III, across-section on line 1-2 of Fig. I. l
Buggy-tops are now commonly constructed with 'a base-rail of iron, to which therbows supporting the covering are attached. This base-rail is shaped to correspond with the upper edge of the buggy-seat, to which' it is scoured, in some instances, by bolts or screws, and in others by lock-fastenings, which permit the ready connection of the buggy-top to, or its disconnection and removal from, the buggy-seat.
My invention relates to a fastening device of thekind last mentioned, and consists in securing the buggytop to thc seat by horizontal and vertical shanks or hooks projecting from the under side of the base-rail, and entering corresponding sockets fastened to the sides of the buggy'seat, acting in combination with each other, and a spring-shank hook and socket at the back of the seat, to secure the top firmly to the seat aganstupward and backward and forward strains.
Like letters refer to like parts in each ofthe iigures.
A represents-the buggy-seat, of any common form or construction; B represents the base-rail of the top, to which the bows supporting the covering are attached in a common manner. AnA extension, C, of the seat-back may be also attached to the base-rail in a common manner. D D represent the horizontal sockets for-med in the ends of iron plates, securely fastened by screws to the sides of the seat nea-r the front thereof, the sockets projecting slightly beyond the rim of the seat. E E represent the vertical sockets formed and secured similar to sockets D to thc sides of 'the seat, near the back thereof, and also projecting slightly over the rim of the seat in line with sockets D. F represents the vertical socket applied tothe back of the seat, at the centre thereof, in the same manner as sockets D and E are applied to the sides. G represent the Shanks projecting from the under side of the base-rail and entering the horizontal sockets D. I-I H represent the vertical shanks.pro. jecting from the vunder side of the base-rail and entering the sockets E. I represents the shank-hook projecting from the under side of the base-rail at the back centre thereof, and entering the 'socket F. J represents a spring key riveted to the back of the base-rail and catching between the base-rail and a shoulder, J', formed on the socket-plate I", and thereby locking the shank-hook I in its socket F. The individual action of the horzontal Shanks G, when entered in their sockets, will be to secure the top against an upwar'dV strain applied at the front thereof, while that of the vertical shanks II will secure it against a backward strain, and that of theshank-hook I will secure it against a forward and upwhrd strain, and their combined action will beto secure the top firmly to the 'seat against any and all strains to which it may be subjected. The disconnection and, removal of the top from theseat is effected by first pressing the spring key .I out `from its engagement with the shoulder J', and then raising the top slightly at the back, sufficient to withdraw the vertical shanks, when a short backward movement will withdraw the horizontal Shanks, and the disengagement will be complet-e.
The Operation of connecting the top to the seatvis simply the reverse of that just described.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The described arrangement ofthe horizontal and vertical shanks and sockets at the sides of the top and seat, in combination with the shank-hook and socket and spring key at the back of the seat, in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
HENRY F. HOLT.
