UNTTao STATES Tirion,
ZAIDA B. WEBB, OF MADISON, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR TO WEBB. FOLDING BOX COMPANY, OF NEWARK, NE
JERSEY.
W JERSEY, A CORPORATION OF NEW FOLDING BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N o. 713,028, dated November 4, 1902. Application led March I8, 1902. Serial No. 98,770. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom, it may concern.:-
Be itknown that I, ZAIDA B. WVEBB, of Madison, countyof Morris, State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Boxes, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to improvements in folding boxes, such as are set up without the lo use of glue or tools; and the objectof my invention lis to produce a simple, strong, and easily-manipulated box which makes a neat package and which cuts to good advantage.
A special object of my invention is to provide a simple and secure fastening for the box ends when the box is set up, which fastening can be quickly adjusted or released.
To these ends my invention consists of certain features of construction and combinazo tions of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar figures of reference refer to similar parts throughout both views.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of an open' box, showing my improvements, and Fig. 2
is a broken perspective view of one end portion of the box, showing the parts separated 3o to better illustrate-their construction.
The box has a bottom portion 10 of rectangular shape, and on two sides of the bottom and preferably separated therefrom by scorelines arethe side pieces 12 and 12, the height of which corresponds to the height of the box, and one of these side pieces-the back one, 2a, as shown-has the usual top 13, which ends in theterminal tuck 14,
to fold over the box in the 4o ner. Wherever bends occur in the material I prefer to have score-lines, although this is not absolutely essential. The front side piece 12 has inwardly-turning end wings 14, which are adapted to extend across the box ends, and the back sidepiece 12a has similar inwardly-turning Wings 15, which overlap thev wings 14 and which are provided near opposite ends with transverse slots 16, adapted to receive the fastening-tucks, hereinafter re- 5o 'ferred to.
as well in the wings 14, and While they are which is adapted: customary man- The slots'l may of course be madel wings 15, so as to produce the best bracing effect, still they may be located nearer together. It is anadvantage, however, to have them at the extreme edges, as also to have the tucks 20, hereinafter referred to, at the edges of the end pieces 17, as by this arrangement the box is not only stronger, but can be more veasily cut and manipulated.
Projecting from theV end portions of the bottom 10 are the end pieces 17, which are adapted to fold up when the box ends are formed and vwhichhave the inwardly-turning flaps 18, adapted to lie over and protect the material in the box. The end pieces 17 are each inwardly and upwardly cut, as shown at 19, so as to produce the side tongues 20, the bases of which are preferably coincident with the score-line of the part 17 18, and when the box is to be set up the side pieces 12 12'L areturned to a vertical position, the wings -15 are turned inward across the box ends, the Wings 14 are turned inward to overlap the Wings 15, the end pieces 17 are turned up, the tongues Z0 are made to overlap the two wings 14 and 15 at each end of the box, and the tongues 20 are thrust in'to the'slots 16 on the inside of the box, as shown clearly in Fig. 1. Thus it will be seen avery simple and quicklyoperated fastening device is made, and the several parts-to wit, 14, 15, and 17-which form the box ends are firmly bound together. Then when the fiaps 18 are turned in and the cover 13 turned down a very compact and secure package is formed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- Y' 1. As an improved article of manufacture, a folding box comprising a bottom portion havingupwardly-turning side pieces-on two edges thereof, overlapping end wingsonthe ends of the side pieces, said wings being adapted to fold in'across the box end, and one set of wings being provided with a plurality of essentially horizontal slots disposed near the end of the said wingsiend pieces on the two remaining edges of the bottom, and a pair of tongues on each end piece, said tongues being located near the side edges of the end pieces and adapted to overlap the preferable near the side edges or ends of the IOO edges of the end wings and engage in the aforesaid slots.
2. As an improved article of manufacture, a folding box, comprising a bottom portion, 5 side pieces on two edges thereof, end wings on the two side pieces, the said wings being adapted to overlap the box ends, and one set of wings being slotted at the end portions thereof, end pieces on the two remaining edges of the bottom, the end 'pieces being adapted to fold up against the inwardly-turning wings and having flaps at their top edges, and tongues on the side edges of the end name to this specification in the presence of zo two subscribing witnesses.'
