Description
@with .tetten atmtV @fnf ARTHUR D. MEDLICTT, vOli" WINDSOR LOCKS,-CONlillilGU'l. Letters Patentzvo. 71,199, daad Nmm'btrle, 1867.
I dige Snatch infant tu iu that ttttts gittata-nt mating met uf ttt smite.
'TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONC/EEN:
Beit known that I, ARTHUR D. MEDLIJOT'Lgof Windsor Locks, county of Hartford, and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety-Hatches for'Warehouses; and to enable others skilled in the art to make and .use the same,-I will proceed to describe its construction and `operation by referring to the drawings, in which the same letters'indicate like parts.
The nature of this invention consists in arranging lslat-doors or platforms to wind up on to and off shafts, to open and close the spacein the tube or-hox of anfelevator by means or by the action of material or platform being raised or lowered therein. The object desired tobe attained thereby is to render said boxseeure from aceidents of various kinds, to preventpersons from fallingthrough said openings, asis often the case for the want of some protection; also,'in such cases as where fire originates in one loft or story of a building, to cut off the draught, and thereby greatly retard its progress.'
In the-accompanying drawings is shownavertical section of an elevator with the mechanism noted thereon.
a represents one'side of the boit-opening, near the centre of which is provided a depression or protuberanee, or other convenient provision, to facilitate or' guide the material or Vthe platform upon which the material is placed to be elevated-or lowered from one story to another. are shafts, which extend across one or both open sides ofthe elevatolgand in convenient vproximity to the floor. The ends of these shafts take bearing in boxes e, near or on the' edges ofthe sides a of the opening. cl is aimetallic Slat-platform or door. The edges of these slats are secured together by links, seas to hold them uniform, o ne with the other, and so as to allow them to -roll up and unroll on the shafts b. Each end of these Slat-platforms traverses on or in ways or grooves formed on theins'ide or inner sides a of the opening. One edge of these platform slats is secured to the shafts b. a7.
are actuating-bars, one end of which is secured to cross-bars or sides Aa, so as to allow intermediate bars to be placed in the opening, when necessaryor desirable, or to' the sides. near the opening. `The other ends are secured in or so arranged as toactuate' the platform backward when the material or article being raised or lowered strikes against said bars, their backward movement or winding process heilig facilitated by the joint y action of the weights e, said weights being secured to the end of the cord, which has one or more turns around the end of and'is secured to the shaft b. 'lhisrplatform is rendered self-closing by means of a cord,f, one end of which is secured tothe inner edge ofthe platform, and the other end to the weight g, suitable friction-l pulleys being arranged for lthese cords to work upon. t is a bale of goods, or a platform upon which material or articles are placed to be hoisted or lowered through the opening to or from one story to :mother in a building. Now, whenthis platform or bale is being lifted from one apartment 'to another, the body or sides thereof will strike against the bars d', and by the joint action of the weights e the platform d will be actuated backward, and at the same time, by the action of the weights e, will be wound upon the shaft b, and as soon as the material or platform has passed the floor the slat platform will close up the opening by the action of the weights y. This rolling slat platform or d oor has great advantage over others; it is more compact and sure of operation.
I believe I have thus shown the nature, construction, and operation of this my improvement, so as to enable others skilled in the art tomake and use the same therefrom.
What I claim, therefore, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-' The employment of the opening and closing rolling slat platform d, in combination with the shafts l', weights g, bars d, and platformpjz, substantially as and for the purpose described.
' ARTHUR D. MEDLico'r'r. [L 5.]
