SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 711,526, dated October 21, 1902.
1 Application filed February 17, 1902. Serial No. 94,419. (No model.
To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, CLARENCE D. PRUDEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Paul, in the county of Ramsey and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sheet-Metal Windows, of which the following is aspecification.
vMy invention relates to improvements in fireproof windows, its object being particularly to provide improvements in the construction of swinging sash and the adjacent frameworkof fireproof windows, as hereinafter more particularly described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is an in side view of a portion of one side of the frame and pivotal support. Fig. 2 is an isometric view of the same with the sash closed. Fig. 3 is a section on line a: w of Fig. 2, and Fig. 4 is a section on line L y of Fig. 2.
In the drawings, vA represents one side of the window-frame formed in cross-section of a single piece of metal. Each side member of the window-frame is formed with an opening 2 to receive the supporting-pivot 3, secured to the sash B by means of bolts 4, passing through the sash. Each side member above the pivotal opening 2 is formed with an inturned portion 5, constituting a flange or tongue 9, extending from the top of the window-frame to the sashpivot, and the lower portion of each side member of the frame is formed with an inwardly-turned lip 6, constituting a groove or cap extending from the pivotal support of the sash to the bottom of the window. Each side member of the sash, as shown in the drawings, is composed of a single piece of metal bent upon itself to form a straight flange 0r tongue 7, extending from the pivot to the bottom of the sash, and with a cap 8, extending from the pivot to the top of the sash. The pivot 3 is secured to the sash intermediate of the tongue 7 and cap 8. The sash isalso bent to form a suitable rest for the glass. (Not shown.)
It will be understood that both side members of the frameand sash are similar in construction.
The top and bottom rails of the sash and frame may be of any desired construction.
With the sash pivotally supported in the frame, as shown in the drawings, the sash is adapted to be swungupon its pivot into open 1 position, as shown in Fig. 1. When the sash is turned to closed position, the tongue 7, carried by the sash below its pivots, will pass into the cap 6, carried by the side member of the frameand the tongue 9, carried by the side member above the pivot, will fit into the cap 8, carried by the sash, thus constituting an overlapping joint between the sash and 7 1. In a fireproof window, the combination of the side pieces .of a window-frame each formed of a single piece of sheet metal in cross-section, and asash pivoted therein, each side of the sash being formed of a single piece of sheet metal in cross-section, the side'pieces 'of said sash and frame being each bent upon itself to form cooperating flanges and caps.
2. In a fireproof window, the'combination of the side members of the frame, each formed of a single piece of sheet metal in cross-section, a sash pivotally supported therein, each side of the sash being formed of a single piece of metal in cross-section, the sash upon one side of said pivot being bent upon itself to form a cap, the adjacent frame being bent upon itself "to form a flange fitting in said cap, the frame upon the opposite side of said pivot being bent upon-itself to form a cap and the adjacent sash being bent upon itself to form a flange fitting in saidcap.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CLARENCE D. PRUDEN.
