BALL..
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 710,752, dated October '7, 1902.
Application filed .Tuly S0. 1902.
To a/ZZ 1,071,071?, t may concern:
Be it known that I, RICHARD B. CAv'ANAGH, a citizen of the United States, residing in Washington, in the District of Columbia, have 5 invented certain new and useful Improvements in Golf-Balls, of which the following is a specication.
This invention relates to golf-balls; and its object is to produce at low cost a durable ball 1o which has good flying power.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l illustrates, partly in section, a golf-ball made in accordance with my present invention; and Fig. 2 shows another form of center piece.
Upon a center piece A, preferably of soft rubber and preferably having a center A of metal or other hard material, I apply a thick sphere B, consisting of paper or paper-pulp. The sphere B is highly compressed and may, zo if desired, be formed in segments and then.
united under great pressure upon the center piece A. I then apply a gutta-percha shell C under heat and pressure in such a manner as to hold the iilling B under high com- 2 5 pression. At the operation of applying the shell C the gutta-percha is softened by the heat, and the paper iilling Bis caused to join firmly to said shell, practically all over the interior surface thereof, thereby making the 3o ball of good flying quality and great durability.
AtFig. 2 is illustrated a center piece D, which may be used instead of the soft rubber A and which consists of a mixture of 'Serial No. 117,606. (No model.)
granules of cork E and granules of rubberF mixed with a suitable cement G of rubber or of acompound of glue and glycerin or of other suitable material.
Having described my invention, I claiml. A golf-ball comprising a soft centerpiece, a hard center therewithin, a thick sphere thereon of compressed paper, and a shell of gutta-percha which adheres to the paper.
2. A golf-ball comprising a soft-rubber center piece, a hard center therewithin, a thick solid sphere of paper thereon, and a shell of gutta percha which adheres to the paper sphere.
8. A-rgolf-ball comprising a sphere of paper, said sphere being formed of half-shells, a soft, springy center piece, a hard center Within `said center piece, and a gutta-percha shell.
4. A golf -ball comprising a center piece formed at least partially of soft rubber, a hard center within .said center piece, a thick sphere thereon of compressed paper, and a shell of gutta-percha Which holds said paper sphere under compression.
5. A golf-ball comprising a springy center piece having a metal center, a sphere thereon consisting of compressed paper, and a shell of gutta-percha which adheres to lthe paper sphere and holds the same under compression.
RICHARD B. CAVANAGH.
