GEORGE G. GUENTIIER AND ARTHUR G; GUENTIIER, OF LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA.
LOCKING DEVICE FOR MOTOR-CONTROLLERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 710,682, dated October 7, 1902.
Application filed December 4,1900. Serial No. 88,670. (No model.)
To all whom it m/my concern:
Beitknown that we, GEORGE G. Gumzrnns and ARTHUR G. GUENTHER, citizens of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, county of Los Angeles, State of California, have invented a new and useful Locking Device for Motor-Controllers, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to improvements in motor-controllers, and pertains to providing means for locking the power-controller when the circuit is broken and securing the said power-controller firmly locked against movement until the circuitis made. In the application of our invention to elevators the opening of a door may be made to break the circuit, and thereby operate our locking device to prevent the elevator-operator from moving the car until he has closed the door leading to the shaft.
Ourinvention consists of the novel and useful construction, arrangement, and combination of parts hereinafter fully set forth in the description of parts and particularly defined in the annexed claims.
In the drawings accompanying this application and illustrating ourinvention, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the invention, showing the controller-shaft unlocked in full lines and locked in dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the plate fixed to the controllershaft and forming part of the locking device. Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view of the plate; and Fig. 4c is a detail view of a part of the armatore-lever, showing the bolts of the locking device.
Like letters of reference designate like parts in the several figures of the drawings.
In the application of our invention to hydraulic and electric elevators of the type which is controlled by cables, we employ a plate O, in the form of a semicircle or halfdisk, and attach or secure said plate fixedly to the controller-shaft A, preferably to the controller-arm B. This plate is slotted, as at H H, said slots being arranged in two rows in a semicircle near the edge of the plate and concentric with the controller-shaft A. The outer series extends on the left of the vertical or the median line only, while .the inner series of slots extends only to the right of the 'vious.
vertical. On the same circumferential line as the inner series, however, on the left of the vertical, is a single long slot I, extending from the vertical to the lower edge of plate 0. On the left of the plate the slots, with the exception of the long one, have their edges nearest the median or vertical line beveled, as at J, and the series of slots on the right have their edges oppositely beveled, the direction of the bevel in each series of slots being toward the median line. Adjacent to this plate on the side opposite to the arm B is fixed an electromagnet F, provided with an armature-lever D, located contiguous to the plate. This armature-lever is pivotally mounted in a frame containing the magnet, and is held out of engagement with the magnet, when the circuit is broken, by the coiled spring G. The end of this lever has projecting therefrom two bolts E E, adapted to engage each with one series of slots, for a purpose hereinafter to be disclosed. The ends of these bolts are beveled to conform to the bevel of the slots with which they register, so that the arm B may be moved back to the center whenever the circuit is broken and the bolts engage with the slots to either side of the vertical.
The operation of the invention will be ob IVhen a door X leading to the elevator-shaft is left open, the circuit is broken through the medium of a make-and-break device, such as w, and the spring G throws the armature-lever out of engagement with the magnet and the end with the bolts into engagement with the slots of the plate O. The instant the bolts engage with the slots they render the controller immovable until the door is closed and the circuit thereby made or closed.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
1. An automatic locking device for motorcontrollers comprising an electric. circuit, make-and-break devices in said circuit, a controller-shaft, a perforate plate fixed to the controller-shaft, a locking device adapted to engage with said plate to secure the controller against movement, and an eletromagnet in the circuit, operating the said locking device by the opening and closing of the circuit, substantially as specified.
2. An automatic locking device for motorcontrollers comprising an electric circuit, make-and-break devices in said circuit, a controller-shaft, a plate fixed to the controller-shaft, and provided with an outer and an inner series of slots in said plate, arranged in a semicircle and concentric with the coutroller-shaft, the outer series extending to one side of a medial line, and the inner series extending to the opposite side, and a single long slot on the same circumferential line as the inner series, extending from the said median line to the lower edge of the plate, an electromagnetin said circuit, an armaturelever, and bolts secured to said lever, and adapted to engage with the outer and inner series of slots in the plate, when the circuit is broken, substantially as specified.
3. An automatic locking device for motorcontrollers comprising an electric circuit, make-and-break devices in said circuit, a controller-shaft, a plate fixed to the controller-shaft, and provided with an outer and an inner series of slots in said plate, arranged in a semicircle and concentric with the controller-shaft, the outer series extending to one side of a median line, and the inner series extending to the opposite side, and a single long slot on the same circumferential line as the inner series, extending from the said median line to the lower edge of the plate, each slot with the exception of the central one of the outer series and the long one of the inner series, having its edge nearest the median line, beveled or slanted toward that line, an electromagnet in said circuit, an armaturelever, and bolts secured to said lever, and adapted to engage with the outer and inner series of slots in the plate, when the circuit is broken, said bolts being beveled on the ends to conform to the bevel of the slots in the series, with which each registers, substantially as specified.
4:. A locking device for motor-controllers comprising a controller-shaft, a plate fixed to the controller-shaft, and having an outer and an inner series of slots arranged in a semicircle and concentric with the controllershaft, a locking device independently mounted adjacent to the said plate, and designed to engage with the slots in the plate, and an electromagnet controlling said locking device, substantially as specified.
5. A locking device for motor-controllers, comprising a controller-shaft, a semicircular plate fixed to the controller-shaft, and having an outer and an inner series of slots arranged in a semicircle and concentric with the controller-shaft, the outer series extending to one 'side of the median line, and the inner series extending to the opposite side, and a single long slot on the same circumferential line as the inner series, extending from the said median line to the lower edge of the plate, an electromagnet in a circuit, an armature-lever, and bolts secured to said lever and adapted to engage with the outer and inner series of slots in the plates when the circuit is broken.
6. A locking device for motor-controllers, comprising a controller-shaft, a semicircular plate fixed to the controller-shaft, and having an outer and an inner series of slots arranged in a semicircle and concentric with the controller-shaft,the outer series extending to one side of the median line, and the inner series extending to the opposite side, and a single long slot on the same circumferential line as the inner series, extending from the said median line to the lower edge of the plate, each slot, with the exception of the central one of the outer series and the long one of the inner series, having its edge nearest the median. line beveled or slanted toward that line, an electromagnet in a circuit,an armature-lever, and bolts secured to said lever and adapted to engage with the outer and inner series of slots in the plate when the circuit is broken, said bolts being beveled on the ends to conform to the bevel of the slots, substantially as specified.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our own we have hereunto affixed our signatures in the presence of two witnesses.
