Be it known that I, DARWIN E. WRIGHT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Washington, in the District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Looking Devices for Filing-Receptacles or the Like, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the characters of reference marked thereon. 7

My invention relates to an improvement in locking devices both for filing-receptacles or drawers themselves and for the card rods or supports for the cards or other devices filed away in the receptacles; and the particular object is to provide in one apparatus mech anism for unlocking simultaneously and in one operation the drawer and card-rod of a card-index system and to permit of the separate locking of the rod and drawer, whereby the former may be looked before the latter.

In an application filed by me on the 22d day of May, 1902, Serial No. 108,55 l, I have claimed, broadly, a mechanism of the character described, and the present invention relates to certain details of construction presenting alternative and dilferent arrangements for carrying outin certain specific ways the broad ideas covered in the former application, although it will be understood that the present invention is not to be limited in all respects to details of construction. In its broadest sense, perhaps, the invention may be said to be similar to the other in the fact that in both the same means which operate the bolt to retract it also retracts the card-rod-locking lever, the parts mutually coaoting and having means to return to normal position. In the former case, however, the bolt itself in its movement engaged the card-rod-lockin g lever and released it, while in the present case they are simultaneously moved, but are independent of each other, so that they can be independently returned to normal position.

Theinvention therefore consists in the matters hereinafter described, and referred to in the appended claims.

The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a front view of the locking mechanism with the face-plate removed, showing the parts in position assumed when the drawer and card-rod are locked. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the drawer and card-rod unlocked. In this figure, however, two cardrods are shown, the card-rod-locking lever being arranged to act in both simultaneously. Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 1 of a modification of-the invention; and Fig. 4. is a view similar to Fig. 3, showing the drawer-bolt and card-rod unlocked. Fig. 5 is a similar View of another modification.

In the drawings, A represents the back plate of the lock-casing or a portion of the drawer, the front plate being removed.

B is the drawer-bolt,normally pressed outwardly by the spring 1, bearing against the shoulder 2. The bolt is guided vertically by the pin and slot 3 4. It is offset to form a downwardly-depending arm 0, which at its lower end has a projecting shoulder 5, against which, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, one side of a double key 6 is adapted to bear to depress or retract the bolt to unlock it. Where the offset takes place a shoulder 7 is formed, over which when the bolt is retracted or depressed, as shown in Fig. 2, the upper end 8 of a swinging spring-catch D is adapted to fit, thus holding the bolt in retracted position until released by swinging the catch from engagement with the shoulder 7, which is accomplished by the operator grasping the pin 9 on the lower end of the catch D, projecting through the slot 10, and moving it to the position shown in Fig. 1. At the same time that one side of the key presses upon the upper side of projection 5 it bears against the lower side of projection 11 on the cardrod-locking lever E,which is vertically guided by pin-and-slot arrangement l2 l3 and has a projecting arm 14 at it lower end normally bearing by spring 15 on the card rod F. When the locking-lever E is raised or retracted, as shown in Fig. 2, the upper end 16 of a swinging spring-catch Gr engages beneath the shoulder 17 and holds the lockinglever out of engagement with the card-rod until catch G is swung by means of pin 18, projecting through slot 19, to position shown in Fig. 1. As shown in Fig. 2, the arm let extends in opposite directions and serves to engage and lock two card-rods instead of one, as shown in Fig. 1.

In Fig. 3 a key with one arm instead of two arms is used, and this is adapted to bear on the projecting end 21 of a freely-swinging lever H, having a shoulder or projection 22 to engage the under side of the projection 11 on the card-rod-locking lever E and having on its opposite end a shoulder 20 to engage the upper side of the projection 5 on the locking-bolt 0. Thus there is a pivoted lever 11, adapted in its movement under the action of the key to simultaneously retract the bolt and card-rod-locking lever; but as it is freely pivoted when the pressure of the key is Withdrawn it allows sufficient play between the

20 and 5 and 22 and 11 as to permit the independent expanding movements of the bolt and card-rod-locking lever when the spring-catches D and G (which correspond to D and G in Figs. 1 and 2) release the said bolt and locking-lever.

In Fig. 5 still another modification is shown, which is to a certain extent a combination of Figs. 1 and 3 in that the swinging lever His attached to the bolt-shank to have a slight lateral play by means of the pin and slot 2; 25, and as the bolt is depressed through the action of the key, which may be single or double, the outer end of the lever H engages the projection 26 upon the card-rod-locking lever E and raises the same, the catch G passing under the shoulder 17 and holding the locking-lever out of engagement with the rod. The other parts of the mechanism correspond to the parts shown in other figures of the drawings.

It will he understood that the arrangements shown in Figs. 3, 4, and 5 may be applied to looking a plurality of card-rods simultaneously.

Various minor modifications and changes may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. In a card-indexing system or similar filing apparatus, a locking device for the receptacle, a card rod or support, and means for locking the same, means for unlocking at one operation both the receptacle and the card rod or support, and means for returning the devices to locking position independently of each other; substantially as described.

2. In a card-indexing system or similar filing apparatus, a locking device for the receptacle, a card rod or support, and means for locking the same, means for simultaneously unlocking both the receptacle and the card rod or support, and means for returning the devices to locking position; substantially as described.

3. In a card-indexing system or similar filing apparatus, a locking device for the receptacle, a card rod or support, and means for locking the same, means for simultaneously unlocking both the receptacle and the card rod or support, and independently-operated means for returning the devices to locking position; substantially as described.

4. In a card-indexing system or similar filing apparatus, a locking-bolt for the receptacle, a card rod or support, and a locking-lever therefor, means for retracting the bolt and locking-lever, means for holding them in retracted position, and means for releasing them independently; substantially as described.

5. In a card-indexing system or similar filing apparatus, a locking-bolt for the receptacle, a card rod or support, and a locking-lever therefor, means for retracting the bolt and locking-lever, catches for holding the same in retracted position, and means for releasing the catches independently; substantially as described.

6. In a card-indexing system or similar filing apparatus, a locking-bolt for the receptacle, a card rod or support, and a lockinglever therefor, means for simultaneously retracting the bolt and locking-lever, catches for holding the same in retracted position, and means for releasing the catches independently; substantially as described.

7. In a card-index system or similar filing apparatus, a locking device for the receptacle, ,a card rod or support, and means for locking the same, means for unlocking the receptacle and card rod or support in one operation, catches for holding the parts in unlocked position, and means for releasing the catches independently of each other; subtantially as described.

8. A filing-receptacle having a locking-bolt, a card rod or support, and a locking-lever therefor, a pivoted lever connecting the locking-bolt and locking-lever, means for operating the pivoted lever to retract the locking-lever in one operation with the bolt, and means for releasing the bolt and locking-lever; substantially as described.

9. A filingreceptacle having a locking-bolt, a card rod or support, and a locking-lever therefor, a pivoted lever normally engaging the locking-bolt an'd locking-lever, means for operating the same to retract the bolt and locking-lever, and means for releasing the bolt and locking-lever; substantially as described.

10. A filing-receptacle havinga locking-bolt, a card rod or support, and a locking-lever therefor, a pivoted lever normally engaging the locking-bolt and locking-lever, means for operating the same to retract the bolt and locking-lever, catches for holding the bolt and locking-lever retracted, and means for operating the catches to cause them to release the bolt and locking-lever; substantially as described.
