ROBERT HENRY ASHCROFT, ()E DUNEDIN, NEW ZEALAND.
FILLING OR REFILLING FOUNTAIN-FEMS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 709,731, dated September 23, 1902.
Application filed June 6. 1901. Serial No. 68.430. (No model) To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT HENRY ASH- CROFT, a subject of the King of Great Brita n, and a resident ofthe city of Dunedin, in the British Colony of New Zealand, have i nvented new and useful Improvements in Filling or Refilling Fountain-Pens, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to fountain-pens,and moreespeciallytoasimpleand eflicientineans for filling the barrel or reservoir with ink.
In the drawings accompanying and lot n1- ing a part of this specification, Figure l is an elevation of a fountainpen involving the invention. Fig. 2 is a cross-section through the same.
Like characters refer to like parts in both the figures.
The body or barrel of the pen is denoted by A, and it has near its butt; or real-end the diametrically opposite slots D, the barrel being surrounded by a compressible sleeve, as C, preferably of rubber, which covers or completely closes these slots. WVhen the tip of the pen is dipped in a supply of ink and the sleeve or bulb C is compressed, the latter when released will resume its initial condition, and as it does so i'nk will be drawn up into the barrel.
The invention is not limited to the size nor particular location of the slots D, nor is it.- essential that two he formed.
To limit the movement of the rubber ring 0, I place it between and in contact, or substantially so, with the rigid annular shoulders B on the outside of the barrel, although other means may be provided for this pur pose.
Having described the invention, I claim- In a fountain-pen, a barrel havinga pair of circumferential and circular shoulders, and diametrically opposite slots between said shoulders, the opposite ends of the slots terminating short of the respective shoulders to thereby leave the barrel solid between the ends of said slots and said shoulders, and an elastic sleeve embracing the barrel between said shoulders and the ends of the sleeve abutting against said shoulders.
RO BERT HENRY ASHCROFT.
