Description
No. 709mm. V Patented Sept. 16, I902.
' M. E. 'KELLY.
WASHING MACHINE.
(Application filed Dec. 7, 1901. oooooooo UNITED ST TES PATENT FFICE.
MARY ELLEN KELLY, OF JACKSON, OHIO.
WASHING -MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 709,016, dated. September 16, 1902. Application filed December 7 1901. Serial No. 85,041. No model.) 7 i To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, MARY ELLEN KELLY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Jackson, in the county of Jackson and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful ashing-Machiue, of which the followingis a speci- My invention is an improvement in Washing-machines, and has for its object to pro vide an improved device having a tub or vessel in which is supported slatted buckets that merged in the water and then elevated, so as to cause the water to percolate through the clothes, and thereby cleansing them. In order that these slatted buckets may be easy of operation, I connect them to the opposite sides of a rock-shaft that is journaled in the tub and which is adapted to berocked to alternatively dip the buckets in the water.
A further object of my invention is to arrange pounders or plungers to operate within the buckets and upon the clothes, as will be fully described'hereinafter.
With these and other objects in view my invention consists in certain details of construction and novelties of combinatiomas'will be fully describedin the following specification and pointed out in the claims, reference being had to the drawings, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of my improvement. I Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof, and Fig. 3 is an irregular longitudinal section taken about on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2.
In carrying out my invention I employ a tub or vessel A, suitably mounted upon legs A and having one end provided with a lid A Centrally jo urnaled in the tub is a rock-shaft B, having arms 0 projecting from either side thereof, to whose outer ends are pivotally held slatted buckets D. A rock-shaft E is journaled in suitable brackets E directly above the shaft B and has one end provided with a crank-handle F and its opposite end with an arm E to the ends of which are con nected pitman-rods E Whose opposite ends are secured to treadles E arranged upon a suitable bracket-plate E. To the central portion of the shaft'is connected oppositely-projecting arms G, whose outer ends have connected thereto rods H, carrying plungerpounders I, which are preferably formed of short cylindrical arms, whose outer ends terminate inspherical portions I. These pounders are of such size to conveniently operate in the slatted buckets D, and in operation the bucketsafter a suitable quantity of water has been placed in the tub and the treadle operated to rock the shaft E, which alternately at the same time the plungers operate orpress the clothes, which forcibly causes the water to percolate thereth rough and quickly and thoroughly cleanse them. that this operation is very simple and requires but a short time for operation, andin practice Imay make the bottom of the tub of metal, so that the water in the tub may be heated by placing agas or oil stove thereunder. By arranging the crank-handle upon the opposite end of the shaftvto which the treadles are connected the said shaft may be rocked by hand, and thus relieve the operator should she become tired of operating the treadles.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
' 1. A washing-machine comprising a tub or receptacle a shaft journaled therein and having arms projecting from either side thereof, buckets pivotally connected to the outer end of said arms, brackets arranged upon the tub and having a shaft journaledtherein, arms projecting laterally from the shaft and having rods connected to their outer ends, the lower ends thereof being provided with plungers working in the buckets and means for rocking the last-named shaft, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. Ina washing-machine, the combination of a tub or receptacle, a shaft journaled therein, arms projecting from the said shaft, buckets carried by the arms, brackets secured to the tub, a. shaft journaled in the brackets, arms projecting from the last-named shaft, plungers connected to the arms and working in said buckets and means connectedto the said last-named shaft for operating it and the said plungers, substantially as shown and described.
