IMPROVEMENT IN STEAM-ENGINES.
'y Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 70,841, dated November 12, 1867.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN M. HIRLINGER, of Red Rock, in the county of Luzerne, and in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cylinders for Steam-Engines, and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
In the annexed drawings, making part of this specification, A represents a steam-cylinder with both ends permanently closed. Upon one side of this cylinder is formed a V-shaped channel or way, in which is placed a similarlyshaped slide, H, which is made about twothirds as long as the cylinder. G represents a strong metallic bolt, which passes through the slide H, and through a slot at the bottom or angle of the V-shaped channel, and has its inner end secured fast in 'piston B. The slot in the cylinder is lna'de long enough to allow the piston to play the usual and required distance, the slide H serving to break the joint or cover this slot, so as to eft'ectually prevent the escape of steam in this direction. The slide H is kept in place by means of the keepers I, which are secured to it, and Whose ends are bent or formed so as to embrace anges at the mouth of the opening in which the slide rests.
The steam-chest is formed upon the upper side of the cylinder, and has placed within a eut-oft' valve, D. This arrangement of the valve with its pin and the piston with its recess O dispenses with the necessity of having cams and rods for working the valve by means of some part of the engine.
The steam, when exhausted, escapes through the openingsccccand d at the under side of the cylinder.
The pitman of the engine connects tothe bolt or shaft G of slide H.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim is- The slide H, as constructed, in combination with the slotted cylinder, the bolt or shaft Gr, and the piston B, for operating the valve D by means of its pin E, extending into a recess in said piston, in the manner substantially as and for the purposes speciied.
